• Operates heavy motor equipment in the performance of assigned tasks.
• Operates large dump trucks or heavy trucks with special bodies, truck-mounted winches, cranes and booms, sweeper, large compressor, road roller, gang mower and any equipment assigned to perform tasks/large area ruff mowers over 100”.
• Operates automotive units spreading sand and/or chemicals to alleviate icy road conditions and to plow and/or remove snow.
• Performs labor incidental to the work of operating assigned equipment or performs duties of Laborer, or motor equipment operators as required.
• May service and follow prescribed preventive maintenance procedures on assigned equipment.
• Performs manual work in digging and backfilling excavations.
• Handles heavy materials on construction, maintenance and repair projects.
• Assists in pipe laying, road patching, cleaning of storm sewers and catch basins or in any phase of public works maintenance work.
• Shovels snow and removes ice and snow from walks, steps, drives and pavements; assists motor equipment operators in sanding and/or salting programs.
• Rakes leaves; mows and rakes grass, trims shrubbery, applies paint, plants flowers, annuals and perennials. Assists in care of playgrounds and other athletic areas. Sweeps and removes materials as directed.
• Operates light registered motorized equipment such as pick up truck or sit down mower of one mowing unit; jack hammers or weed whackers, trap or infield rake machines, golf carts, maintenance trucks, hedge trimmer, liquefied pressure cleaner machine, small sidewalk sweeper or other assigned cleanup tasks general in nature not requiring any special licenses.
• Performs manual work in preparing athletic, recreational and public facilities such as the golf course. Handles heavy materials on construction, maintenance and repair projects.
• Assists in the care of playgrounds and other public recreational facilities. Waters grass and operates automatic irrigating equipment. Assist in tree trimming and removal program as needed.
• Operates small motorized blower in the cleaning of leaves or sandy areas.
• Operates light maintenance equipment, both manual and motorized.
• Makes occasional contact with general public answering questions of incidental nature and in giving directions.
• May serve as a gatekeeper.
• Washes equipment, paints signs and poles and removes graffiti.
• Regular and predictable attendance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:
• Knowledge: Some knowledge of specialized tools, mechanical maintenance and experience in construction repairs. Familiarity with small motorized equipment and use of hand tools. Considerable knowledge of the mechanics and operation of heavy automotive equipment.
• Skills: Skills in operating heavy construction and maintenance equipment. Some landscaping skills preferred. Good communication skills.
• Ability: Ability to lift heavy materials and to work continuously under varying weather conditions. Ability to understand and follow oral instructions. Ability to use hand tools and operate light motorized equipment.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent plus one year of experience in public works, construction, landscaping or related field; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid Class B Driver’s license with air brake endorsement and have a good driving record, or acquire a license within one year from date of hire. Candidates hired without a Class B License are subject to the Memorandum of Agreement, relative hereto, that was approved by the Town and the Union. Preference will be given to applicants who currently hold a class B license.
