We are a longtime established, very small firm with a narrowly defined area of expertise. As a Company we track in considerable detail the technical and business condition of firms -- now almost 25,000 of them -- having been in receipt of R&D funding (c.$49+B) in a federal program called SBIR: Small Business Innovation Research. With many now well-known Large Firms having got their start in the program, SBIR is an across many Federal Agency initiative we were involved in creating many years ago and within which community we are very well-known.
Our primary clients are
Major and mid-size corporations interested in working with one/more of those small firms on what are often sophisticated, technology-based endeavors
Senior personnel in Federal Agencies interested in mining the extensive scope of data we have on their awardees and those of other agencies.
State economic development support organizations who understand well the importance and value of a vibrant small high-tech community
Underpinning everything we do are
highly sophisticated, very detailed, content-rich relational databases custom-built in-house and that are ever a work in progress.
and powerful algorithms enabling us effectively to deep-mine the hundreds of thousands of documents in our systems and to undertake compelling analyses.
We are in the process of transitioning our systems also to incorporate elements of machine learning.
Our need is ASAP
Type of position:
Initially less than full-time but not less than 20-25 hours weekly
organized almost entirely around entering recent SBIR-STTR awards and crafting multi-element Company Profiles into our systems.
For the right person(s) the potential c/would exist for fairly rapid upgrade to a full-time position if that is their preference.
Our standard approach to effective engagement of everyone's talent is that once someone has demonstrated proficiency in the core activity of what we do in the database content space, though that activity remains a primary focus, their job description is widened more effectively to make better and fuller use of their formal training and experience.
Note also that once core data-entry proficiencies are demonstrated, off-site work is sometimes possible as that is applicable BUT in-office presence is a requirement for all newly-hired for the first few months.
For the right candidate we can be very flexible. We are receptive to
Mother's hours, snow days and school vacation schedules
Working around the class (and semester) schedule of a student: as available during term time and full time during vacations.For quality student hires - including limited hours workers - who stay with the firm, we commit to a 'bonus' payment on their one-year anniversary of up to 10% of that first year's earnings with us to be applied against their student loans
People making a career change but - importantly - having some of the sophisticated internet research skills essential to what we do.
Those perhaps re-entering the work-force after some period of absence for whatever reason but who have kept sharp their skills
Those who - for their own reasons - want less than full-time work but want to remain professionally engaged
We are NOT INTERESTED at all in long-distance service providers, evening hours or weekend workers. Nor -- with respect -- are we interested in those with considerable senior management experience who are really not prepared (nor interested) in doing the type of core data-prep work that is required of everyone here and that supports the entire operations of the firm. While we appreciate their interest, our experience has been that (former) senior management personnel actually want to run the firm.

Job description: The major thrust of the available position is sophisticated Internet Research
Content retrieval, compilation and editing of a range of data about the Small Companies and Large Corporations that are in our systems
Processing input from high-volume data-flows from established sources: SBIR-STTR awards and other federal contract dollars: Issued patents; Venture Capital,: Merger and Acquisition transactions; IPOs; Professional paper retrieval, media coverage -- professional and popular press etc
Our systems are powerful, highly complex and multi-faceted -- and can be seriously daunting to the uninitiated. By starting off new personnel with fairly straight-forward data-entry assignments, the effort is gradually to introduce someone into the specifics of our systems and, with training and support, have them become familiar with how this all works and fits together.
Previous professional experience in similar space and current educational level are less immediately critical than
Demonstrable internet research capabilities. NOTE: being social media savvy is NOT a plus for us. Twitter and Facebook etc is not at all what we do
Defined capacities to synopsize information garnered from a wide range of online sources
Well-honed analytical and interpretative skills
Well organized - with a keen understanding of the vital importance of paying attention to detail
Willing to learn and to follow instructions
Interested in what we do - or more particularly in enabling the important outcomes. Very important.
Multi-task comfortable - especially if necessary to make deadlines
Not being spooked by changing priorities as workflow demands
...along with an ability to work either independently and collaboratively as necessary
In addition to an ability effectively to use the internet to find the various types of data we need, well developed verbal and written communication skills are a basic and fundamental requirement along with a lot more-than-the-basics proficiency in MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Some complex database usage experience would be useful but is not a requirement.
Our powerful relational databases are built on the highly sophisticated 4D platform. Our highly complex, interactive, database-driven website is Drupal based: not a simple brochure site. We are in the middle of tackling a much-needed, major rework of our website. Relevant expertise in that task would be a plus: web-design, photoshop etc
