Healthy, postmenopausal women and men aged 50-80 years with a BMI 18-35 kg/m2 are needed for a study to observe the effects of different kinds of iron supplements on iron usage in the body and immune function. The study will be held at the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA) in downtown Boston and will involve approximately 4 visits to the center over the course of about 4 weeks.

We want to look at the effect of different types of iron supplements on iron usage, inflammation and the response of immune cells to bacteria and viruses. For the study, you'll be randomized (like rolling a dice) to one of six groups. You will be asked to take an iron supplement or a supplement that does not contain iron (a placebo) once a day, or once a week, for 4 weeks. You'll also be asked to provide blood and stool samples at your first (week 0) and last study visit (week 4). You may receive between $25 and $400 depending on your eligibility for the study.
