JOB SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS

· Communication Skills: Communication is crucial in a kitchen. Short order cooks will need to read orders, understand instruction and talk to their fellow cooks to make sure the food is delivered hot and delicious.

· Customer Service Skills: Customers may have special requests or complaints. Service with a smile will be necessary.

· Hand-Eye Coordination: Cooking requires great knife skills, proximity to fire and many dangerous elements. A steady hand will help greatly.

· Sense of Taste and Smell: Knowing when food has gone bad, understanding proper seasoning and what tastes good will help keep customers.

· Stamina: Kitchen hours can be long and grueling. Short order cooks need to be able to stand on your feet for long periods and lift heavy objects from storage.

· Teamwork: Very often, cooks are part a team, reporting to a kitchen manager. They will need to be able to work as a team to create a great dining experience for customers.


JOB TASKS


· Grill, cook, and fry foods such as french fries, burgers and tacos.

· Clean food preparation equipment, work areas, and counters or tables.

· Restock kitchen supplies, rotate food, and stamp the time and date on food in coolers.

· Perform food preparation tasks, such as making sandwiches, carving meats, making soups or salads, baking breads or desserts, and brewing coffee or tea.

· Plan work on orders so that items served together are finished at the same time.

· Perform general cleaning activities in kitchen and dining areas.
