This is a tested, working, and great sounding classic Akai 8 track recorder player / receiver amp / am/fm radio tuner with phono input. Quality manufactured in the 70's in Japan. It was "Licensed from Lear Jet" per the inscription. 8 Track technology was originally developed by Lear Jet for their luxury airplanes. Akai were the kings of magnetic tape equipment 50 years ago. They designed this to be one of the finest consumer 8 track player / recorders. This has both line rca/ phono inputs, as well as 1/4" mic input on the back. Speaker outs are 1/4".
Everything on this deck is fully functional except for indicator lamp for the channel one . Channel 2,3, and 4 lamps work . Belt is good. AM/FM tuner works. All inputs work. . Output power needle indicators work. Both channels have strong and even output. Phono preamp works well. Most importantly, the 8 track plays and records well, and sounds great. Speed is good. Channel switching is good. Tape heads are cleaned and they hardly have any wear. This is not a beater with high miles. The heads are shiny, like new. There are a few of these listed on Ebay for significant resale, and they are mostly being sold for parts / non working. This one works, and sounds excellent. Built like a tank. In excellent cosmetic condition.
8 Track is by no means an audiophile format,.. it has serious limitations by today's standards,.. but in the early 70's, this format was state-of-the-art. If you are an 8 track enthusiast, and you want one of the best 8 track decks ever built, this is the one for you.
