Nabeshima ware was a domain kiln established in 1675 by the Nabeshima clan, which brought together 31 of the best potters in the Arita-Imari area of Hizen Province (Arita Town and Imari City, Saga Prefecture) to make offerings for the shogun. It is said to be the most exquisite porcelain in Japan, specially made without regard to profitability, for use as gifts to the shogunate, feudal lords, court nobles, and others. The tradition of Nabeshima ware once ceased with the abolition of feudal domains in 1871, but the technique was revived as a modern craft by the Imaizumi Imaemon family and has continued into the 21st century. The patterns drawn on the high pedestal are so precise that it is difficult to distinguish the beginning from the end of the drawing.
