Inban 100 years agoA method of transferring a pattern to a dish. This technique, which gradually came into use from the Edo period (1603-1868), experienced rapid growth from the Meiji period (1868-1912) onwards. There are two types of inban: one that uses a stencil to transfer a pattern, and one that uses a copper plate. This plate is a stencil print, and was made in the Taisho period (1912-1926) by carving a design into paper, pressing it against the vessel, and printing the indigo pigment to create the characters.
