Theodore Cornelius deGroot, also known as Dick deGroot, was a Dutch-American painter and sculptor born in 1920, in Scheveningen, Netherlands. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and took post-graduate classes in sculpture. He moved to the United States in 1959, where he initially worked in the advertising industry before focusing on murals, portraits, and sculptures.
deGroot's work often depicted contemporary American urban scenes, characterized by geometric planes and expressive combinations of color and light-dark values. Celebrated as one of the most important folk artists of the past 100 years, he died in 2019, at the age of 98.
