This signed Robert L Morgan pottery bowl is a beautiful example of the renowned artist’s work. The hand-thrown piece has a wonderful matte glaze, and the design is quintessential Mid-Century Arts & Crafts/Mission era.
Morgan was born in California and served in the US Navy during WW II. Afterwards he studied at the School for American Craftsmen at Dartmouth, New Hampshire. He and his wife Dorothy, whom he met at Dartmouth, then established their first pottery in Oregon. They returned to New Hampshire in the 1950s and worked, for a brief period in the early 1960s, in Winter Haven, Florida with ties to the Craft Center. They both exhibited and sold their work through the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, as well as taught pottery making through the League. Morgan exhibited at the First Northwest Annual Ceramic Exhibition of 1950 and the Contemporary Crafts and Museum Gallery (CCMG) of Portland, Oregon.
