This pair of vintage chandeliers once graced the prominent guest and event spaces of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan, contributing to the hotel’s image of luxury and cosmopolitan sophistication rooted in the Art Deco and Empire design traditions. This pair, among all the chandeliers and other fixtures from the Waldorf Astoria were salvaged during its 2017 closure and renovation, with over 2,000 pieces extracted from suites, ballrooms, and corridors. They were subsequently auctioned via Kaminski Auction in October 2020.
The chandeliers feature elaborate scrollwork and decorative gilded motifs. The scrolls, beading, and ornamental details evoke a blend of late 19th-century French Empire and Jazz Age New York luxury, combining classical curves with geometric accents. The chandeliers are constructed from cast metal with gold-leaf or gilt highlights, and are paired with molded glass for the bowl sections, which include patterned designs for diffused lighting. The upper parts are finished in patinated metal to echo antiqued bronze patina, while the glass shades below feature tinted elements for warmth.
