This Lionel #45 vintage pre-war Automatic Gateman unit is a rare find in that the sign pole has an open girder style signpost rather than the solid post seen on later Lionel automatic gateman models. This suggests to me that it is one of the earliest offerings of this item.

The unit is made of pressed steel and is painted cream, red and green with a detailed intricately painted gateman figure. I do not know if this is the original paint, or the artistic work of a previous owner.

It is in very Good Condition. The unit shows some general surface wear from age and use including chips and flaking. Please view all photos closely for the best indication of the condition of this item.

The unit has been tested and works fine. Missing is the track hookup connection, but that item I believe is easily available at a company such as the Charles Ro Model Train Store in Malden, Massachusetts.
