Stunning very rare 18th or 19th century Chinese hanging panel or plaque, hand-carved out of one piece of wood, with thick red lacquer and gilt letters and ornaments. The 5 Chinese characters 簪纓傳世冑, of first rate Chinese calligraphy, literally mean “A family producing elite government officials for successive generations”.
Such a plaque or panel, typically hanging on the main pillar of the living room or conference room (see last picture), had been popular among and exclusively reserved for noble families in ancient China.
