This late antique 19th Century American Glider child’s Hobby Horse I believe to have been made by the Morton E. Converse & Company, a toy company in Winchendon [known as Toy Town], Massachusetts. I estimate the piece to be well over one hundred years old.
The swinging glider rocking horse rests on a painted red wooden frame base with a black metal swing frame supporting the horse. The carved wooden painted horse has a realistically modeled head and body, horsehair tail and mane, glass eyes, flared nostrils and an open mouth.
As a young child in Pennsylvania, I was gifted this adored toy by my Great Uncle, an antique dealer. I received it newly painted white with black yarn for its mane and tail. [see photo] It did not have a saddle when I received it around 1945. It does not have the original Morton E Converse metal plate that was usually attached to the base, so I cannot guarantee it as a genuine Converse item.
It has since then been lovingly refurbished with a new more rustic paint finish and authentic horsehair mane and tail. The glass eyes are the original.
Ready to ride or simply display.

The horse measures approximately 34 1/8" in length x 22 1/2" tall.
The base frame measures approximately 33" in length x 12" tall x 12 1/2 wide.
The piece Measures 36" at its longest, 12 1/2" at its widest, and 30 1/2" high.
