Antique Copper Engraving: Passing by A Florist Shop in Edo, Japan - $360 (Newton/Wellesley/Needham)

Swiss diplomat Aimé Humbert (1819-1900) was commissioned by the Swiss Watchmakers' Guild in 1857 and appointed head of the Federal Congress's mission to Japan, conducting a mission from 1862 to 1864. In February 1864, he concluded a Treaty of Amity and Commerce with the Tokugawa shogunate. After returning to Japan, he taught French literature at the Academy. During his approximately 10-month stay, he investigated Japanese affairs, observing history, geography, religion, social systems, political structures, and customs. His findings were published in the magazine Le Tour du Monde under the title "Le Japon." He later published this book as a detailed memoir, a large, vividly illustrated work. The "Passing by A Florist Shop" is one of the magnificent engravings of this book. The piece dates back to the late 19th century, adding historical significance to its already impressive aesthetic.
