Late Qing Dynasty (circa mid-late 19th Century) framed Chinese embroidered silk rank badge depicting a pheasant like bird (indicting a very senior official) centered around an ethereal floral motif mixed with Lingzhi-shaped clouds finished with a fret border in overall blue and silver with a pop of the orange phoenix. Displayed beneath glass on a threaded gold hued background in a classic black frame.

A mandarin square (Chinese: 補子), also known as a rank badge, was a large embroidered badge sewn onto the surcoat of officials in both the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) of the Imperial China. It was embroidered with detailed, colorful animal or bird insignia indicating the rank of the official wearing it.

Rank badges are regularly collected by leading museums around the world, and are typically sold for thousands of dollars at major auctions such Chrystie's, and Sotheby's.

Framed measures: 14”L x 14 1/2”W x 1”D.
