Urban Fashion. Copywriting. Internship. Karmaloop. GO! (Downtown Crossing, Boston)

Hey!
Stop reading this post unless:
1. You like clothes, and I'm not talking about Abercrombie, Ed Hardy or other bullshit you would find at the mall or on the back of a 13 year-old. If you recognize names and labels such as Triumvir, Rebel8, Dissizit!, Supra, KR3W, Mishka, Spiewak and Vans, then keep on reading, friend.
2. You find writing to be enjoyable rather than a chore. Can you churn out 500 words in an hour? No? I don't care. What do I care about? Writing with proper grammar and correct spelling, possessing great attention to detail and displaying the ability to self-edit, all in a (very) high-energy environment. If you're sufficient in all four areas, move on to point number three.
3. You can dedicate at least 20 hours per week between your classes, skateboarding, binge drinking, killin' shit, other (more lame) part-time jobs or whatever else it is you're into. This is the only point I'll be super strict with. If you dress like that 'Jon & Kate Plus 8' guy, type as though you have claws for hands and dropped out of the fourth grade - no big deal. We'll work on it. But 20 hours per week is crucial... and in all honesty, you'll want to be here at the office more than that. We're fun around here. Sound good so far?

We're www.KARMALOOP.com, and if you're familiar with the site or the boutique on Newbury Street, awesome. If not... go away.
Just kidding. For those of you who might not know who we are, Karmaloop is the world's largest online streetwear retailer with a crazy office based here in the Hub of the Universe. This internship calls for being a good lil' soldier on the Men's Merchandising team - more specifically, writing product descriptions. If you prove to be awesome, you can write blogs, help with purchase orders, design graphics if you're a Photoshop wizard, assist the staff photographer and much more. But, first and foremost - product descriptions. Yes, writing them can get tedious sometimes, yes, you will hate describing huge travel bags with 5,000 compartments, and, yes, I'm probably scaring you off a little bit right now, but describing clothes, sneakers and the aforementioned bags o' death (and more - check out the site before replying) is way better than some on-campus job swiping key cards or washing dishes. Plus - free clothes. Lots of free clothes.

Since this internship is for the Men's Merchandising department, being a dude is a plus as far as catching particular cultural references with some of the tees, being familiar with fits on jackets and so on, but being a male is absolutely NOT a requirement. We host parties and events quite often, so if you can drink legally that's also a plus. Again, NOT a requirement. Other plus-points that are not requirements: you listen to lots of music, you love dogs and don't mind them begging for your lunch, you know what shoulder epaulettes are, and you have a killer sense of humor. Actually, that is a requirement. You had better be funny or at least laugh once in a while - this is not a Hot Topic-esque place of moping or an office filled with snobby jerks.

Still wanna know more? Send an e-mail, schedule an interview and get ready for the most bitchin' internship you never thought existed.

Love to write? Love good food? (Boston Back Bay)

From the first time Mom told you to "eat your vegetables" you've been aware that some nutrition messages are successful and some just fall on deaf ears. It's not easy to write about health and nutrition in a compelling way, and it's doubly difficult to come up with creative promotional campaigns that catch the public's fancy without being preachy. Are you that rare person who knows how to bring it all together?

We're Oldways, a 501(c)3 non-profit respected internationally for changing the way people eat through positive and practical programs grounded in science and tradition. You may know us as the creators of the gold-standard Mediterranean Diet Pyramid, for our work in convincing manufacturers in fifteen countries to use the Whole Grain Stamp on more than a billion packages each year, or for any of a number of ground-breaking projects we've worked on over the past two decades.

As we ramp up to launch new programs in 2010, we're looking to add one more person to our staff. If you're the right person, you'll have
* outstanding writing and communication ability
* a track record of creativity and imaginative ideas
* solid computer skills, especially on Macs
* a boat-load of common sense
* a strong work ethic, driven by your deep passion for good food

Each day holds new challenges in this job. One day you may be constructing a 7-day springtime menu that perfectly melds delicious with nutritious, while the next you may be convincing sponsors to underwrite our work. Another day may call for simple page layout skills, or entering ingredients into a recipe-analysis program to create a nutrition facts profile.

The range of skills we'd like to find, all rolled into one person, is admittedly eclectic, and could come from anywhere. You may be an RD, or maybe a self-trained gourmet cook. You may be an avid food blogger, or perhaps an experienced teacher. We're open-minded to whatever route has honed your love of food and your communication skills, as long as you can convince us you know your stuff, and that you're a grown-up who can get results without constant hand-holding.

Check out our websites, get familiar with what we do, then write us and tell us how your talents and experience (yes, experience -- this is not an entry-level position) could contribute to Oldways' continued success in nutrition communications. Your ability to sell yourself to us will say a lot about how well you'll be able to sell an artichoke or a rutabaga to the Twinkie-loving public! No light-weights need apply. We know there are lots of you out there who are saying "Oh! I can write! I love food!" but we're looking for an excellent writer, not just someone who can string a few words together – and for someone who's thought long and hard about the role that good food plays in society.

Oldways is a forward-thinking, ahead-of-the-curve organization with a large impact on global food issues. If you’re hired, your responsibilities will put you in contact with key personalities in the food world, at conferences and meetings. It can be glamorous, cutting-edge work, but with the usual dose of slogging follow-up, of course.

Our offices in Boston’s Back Bay are informal. We don't wear ties or heels, and there's a company dog. Yet the atmosphere is intense and totally professional; each staff member is expected to take full responsibility for his or her projects, while working smoothly as a team player. If this sounds like the ideal job for you, please send your resume, including salary requirements, to Cynthia Harriman (cynthia@oldwayspt.org / 266 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02116). We will treat it with full confidentiality. Salary and benefits are industry standard for nonprofits. Oldways is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Game Designer Internship (Boston, MA)

Who We Want (in one sentence): A creative writing-oriented paid intern (5K over the winter) to write, develop and promote interactive mobile games using the brand-new SCVNGR technology (www.scvngr.com). Read on for more about the position below.

About SCVNGR: SCVNGR is the world’s only enterprise-level geo-gaming platform. We provide the software and infrastructure to power location-based mobile games for institutions and individuals. These games, tours, interactive experiences etc… are played by hundreds of thousands of people via iPhone App, Android App, Mobile Web and even SMS. Over the last year, SCVNGR has been purchased and deployed by over 500 institutions in 44 states and 2 countries with a client repeat rate of over 90%. Our clients are museums, conferences, universities, corporations, promotional firms, individual game-builders and even the U.S. Military (I know, cool right?). In our first full year in business we’ll do just over $1MM in revenue and are on track to do five times that next year. We’re venture backed by Highland Capital to the tune of another million dollars, have 20 full time employees and are basically taking the mobile gaming world by storm. Our month on month revenue has been growing by 40% consistently for the last year. Check us out in Business Week, TechCrunch and Forbes Magazine.

About the Position / Program: We’re hosting a winternship program and are looking for talented, motivated and ambitious students looking to gain some experience working in a fast-paced, high-tech start up and actually make a meaningful impact (paper-pushers need not apply). The positions would be winter internships at our awesome offices in downtown Boston. (Yes, we do have a full sized pool table in the office and ride our bikes indoors to get from one conference room to the others!)

The program described below is for our “Not Your Typical Game Writer Internship” program.

SCVNGR’s software enables anyone, individual or institution, to quickly and easily build sophisticated location based mobile games. We’re looking for a creative (paid) intern over the winter to experiment with the platform and build exciting interactive mobile games using our software. For an example of what our games look like, check out: http://vimeo.com/4492994!

The games that you build (along with games being built by city halls and other institutions all across the country) will be the first SCVNGR games open to the general public through our (soon to be launched) consumer facing site.

We are looking for an extremely creative and bright intern who is excited by the idea of spending an entire winter experimenting with some of the coolest new pieces of technology in the mobile market. SCVNGR games are deployed via text message, mobile web and native phone apps (iPhone and Android) meaning that you will get to build games that make use of live streaming audio and video, real-time GPS tracking and more. (And no, it doesn’t require any tech skills, that’s what the SCVNGR tech team is here for.)

What it does require is great writing skills, a special talent with words, an amazingly creative mind and a love of clues, riddles, ciphers and probably a decent sense of humor. You’ll be building interactive fiction style games that blend digital interactivity with real-world interaction using our state of the art technology to tie it all together.

The program will also include exciting learning opportunities that you can only really get at a high-tech start up. You’ll be fully engaged in the high-tech and start-up community up in Boston, attending lectures and speaking series with some of the best and brightest minds in the world, joining us at local events karate monkey karate monkey if you’re still reading this far be sure to include karate monkey in the title of your email to us where we’re presenting SCVNGR’s exciting business model or just listening to either bright individuals and organizations tout their achievements. We’ll be bringing in speakers from our VC’s other portfolio companies to talk about their experiences ranging from everything from sales to tech to how to survive on two hours of sleep a night (possible, but not recommended).

The whole point is that this when we say it’s “not your typical internship,” we mean it. You’ll be working hard for sure, but you’ll also learn a tremendous amount and having a ton of fun essentially building and promoting awesome games all winter.

If you’re interested (and we hope you are), please take a moment to familiarize yourself with our company by visiting www.scvngr.com. Send a resume / thoughtful cover letter to jobs@scvngr.com. Include a couple of creative ideas of what games you’d build and how you might go about promoting it to get it in the hands of thousands of potential players all across the country.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Travel Writer (Boston)

This month, we are hiring a freelance writer based in or near Boston to write about weekend getaways and urban destinations.

Trazzler is a website where users meander through a world of trips—hand-picked, concise, compellingly written slices of life that pull the reader into a real experience: a hotel stay, walk, adventure, spa, restaurant, ice cream stand, pony ride... really anywhere that travel can take you. And that’s where you come in. Each Trazzler trip is dominated by a photo that sets the scene so that your writing can tell the rest of the story.

How to Apply:
Since Trazzler is quite different from other travel sites, the best way that we have found to scout out new writers is to get a sample trip. Our ideal candidate would be someone who understands what makes Trazzler tick, can easily navigate the content creation tools (and let us know when something doesn't make sense or could be better), and—most important—has a unique and personal way of traveling to share with fellow Trazzlers. Take a look at our writing guide and other help docs if you have any questions.

Instructions:
1. Sign up, if you haven't already.
2. Click on "Write a Trip" at the top of the page (you must be signed in).
3. Write a trip about the place you would like to cover (shoot for 65-150 words).
4. Add the tag BOSfreelance to your trip.
5. Edit your bio to let us know what your area of expertise is and all the regions, countries, and cities that you want to write about (if there are any in addition to Boston).

Let's be up front: while you are free to submit as many sample trips as you would like, we won't be purchasing individual trips. You are free to republish anything that you submit to Trazzler or to submit previously published (copyright-friendly) material that is edited to fit Trazzler's style. We will be keeping track of all of the writers who apply and submit publishable trips to Trazzler.

We pay $250 for 10 trips (these are very short pieces—a trip should be between 65-150 words long).

Proofreader

Do you possess the rare skill of being able to dot every “i” and cross every “t” (not some, not most, but EVERY) in a document? Can you make sure that every comma, colon, dash, and semi-colon are in place? Can you ensure that each word is spelled correctly? Do you know when to use an en dash verses an em dash? Now ask yourself if you enjoy it enough to do it all day, every day?

Do you have an excellent grasp of the English language and of proofreader’s marks? Are you able to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks and deadlines? Are you a confidant self starter that is comfortable working on their own and doesn’t need a lot of coddling or handholding? If you answered “yes” to all of the above questions and you truly enjoy proofreading, please send us your resume.

As a proofreader in our marketing department, you will be responsible for maintaining the grammatical and punctuational integrity of our marketing collateral, conference materials, Web content, corporate forms, and more.

We know its a tall order. Not everyone is capable of being a “great” proofreader. It demands a unique ability to be able to go line by line and character by character to make sure that a document is perfect. And we demand perfection! We don’t want an average or good individual for this position. You must be great—and beyond. If you think you’re more than up to the task, by all means, stand up and be counted! Send us your resume today.

By the way, there are a number of errors scattered throughout the above job description. Identify all of them correctly when you submit your resume, and you will be considered. Miss one, and you will not hear from us. If you cannot find any, please do not apply. Good luck!

Requirements:

•	3+ years proofreading experience
•	Excellent command of proofreader’s marks
•	Ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines (and maintain 99.99% accuracy)
•	Comfortable with working independently
•	BA in English preferred
•	Knowledge of financial industry/terms helpful, but not mandatory
This is a full-time freelance position, with the possibility of permanent employment.

Freelance Copy Editor

The Corporate Marketing department develops strategies and creative executions in collateral, online, direct, and print advertising—as well as public relations—to build awareness and strengthen Commonwealth’s brand identity among our target audiences.

Do you enjoy tinkering with other peoples writing to help them communicate their ideas, thoughts, and concepts in a clear and engaging way? Do you keep the audience at front of mind, and are are you proactive in identifying potential issues? Do you ask smart questions. Are you willing to do a little digging to find the answers?
Do you also posses the rare skill of being able to dot every “i” and cross every “t” (not some, not most, but EVERY) in a document? Can you make sure that every comma, colon, dash, and semi-colon are in place? Can you ensure that each word is spelled correctly? Do you know when to use an en dash verses an em dash?

As a copy editor in our marketing department, you will be juggling a number of projects—often with competing deadlines. From magazine articles to conference materials, to corporate forms, web content, and more—with your help, not only will the writing be top-notch, but you’ll also be insuring that our materials are error-free. The ability to wear a copy editor hat and a proofreader hat at the same time is essential.

Our new copy editor will be someone who’s able to work in a fast-paced environment, remain calm under pressure, and maintain consistency. A confidant self starter that is comfortable working on their own and doesn’t need a lot of handholding. If that sounds like you, please send us your resume.

We know its a tall order. Not everyone is capable of being a “great” copy editor and proofreader. It demands a unique ability to be able to go line by line and character by character to make sure that a document is perfect. And we demand perfection! We don’t want an average or good individual for this position. You must be great—and beyond. If you think you’re more than up to the task, by all means, stand up and be counted!

By the way, there are a number of errors scattered throughout the above job description. Identify all of them correctly when you submit your resume, and you will be considered. Miss one, and you will not hear from us. If you cannot find any, please do not apply. Good luck!

The ideal candidate would also meet the following requirements:

Exceptional grasp of the English language
Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style, a plus
Excellent command of proofreader’s marks
4+ years of copyediting experience
Familiarity with and experience editing financial-related material
Can handle multiple tasks and deadlines (and maintain 99.99% accuracy)
Comfortable working independently
Able to focus in a fast-paced and sometimes noisy environment
BS/BA in English, preferred
Flexible work schedule—this is a part-time position, but you may be called upon to work full-time, as needed
