Teaching English and promoting hygiene practices in Pandan Elementary School

February 6 - February 20, 2010

The Pandan village is located in Rembang regency. The word ‘Pandan’ itself means such kind of leaf which smells good and it can also be used to make a plaited mat.The village provides natural scenery and is far away from polution. This is a pilot project in an elementary school in Rembang regency intended to give some contributions to the educational program in the school and influence positively the develpment of the village, while promoting international solidarity and intercultural encounters. In this context, a team of international volunteers is invited to take part both in renovating the area and in educational activities.
The project will be in Pandan Elementary School with around 100 students and 10 local teachers. The volunteers will help in the renovation and painting of the local school. The educational activities with the children will involve mainly teaching English and basic hygiene practices like cleaning hands, cutting nails, etc.
Study theme: The volunteers will be introduced to the Indonesian culture and customs in general, with a special focus on the Javanese particularities.
Leisure time: During the free time, the volunteers may visit Goa Akbar (Big Cave) and Goa Maharani (Maharani Cave). Near these caves, there is a tourist site called Wisata Bahari Lamongan (the site lies along the beach and is completed with some interesting games, performances and a swimming pool).

Support for disabled children on Bali Island (Volunteer in Indonesia)

Support for disabled children on Bali Island
December 5 - December 19, 2009
March 20 - April 3, 2010

Bali Island is a densely populated island, with population more that 3 million people all together. The population is almost all Indonesian, 95% are of Balinese Hindu descent and could be describe as ethic Balinese. Bali is also a tiny, extremely fertile and dramatically mountainous island. It is only 140 km by 80 km. The tourism boom, which started in 1970s has brought many changes and has helped pay for improvement in roads, telecommunication, education and health. Though tourism has had some marked effects, Bali’s unique culture and custom has proved to be remarkably island. Bali disabled School was founded with the aim to cater for the needs of disabled children and youth in Bali and the surrounding areas. Moreover, this school is also aimed to encourage and motivate the disable children and youth to struggle for their future. We would like to host foreign volunteers because we believe that their interaction with the children, during education and vocational classes and other therapeutic activities will be of great benefit as our students have little or no chances to meet and live with people from other cultures. The intercultural dimension that their presence will generate will also be welcomed and valued by the local staffs. The support that the volunteers will give to our teaching staff, particularly those teaching English, will be invaluable.
The role of the volunteers will be assisting local teacher in classes like teaching basic conversation in English, helping teacher in giving training on physical activities of the disabled students like making simple handicrafts, playing, doing simple sport etc . Volunteers' influence on students is expected to create a sense of knowledge of other realities of the disabled kids and other cultures in a way that improves their own perception of themselves and what they can achieve. Also to open the mind of international volunteers that the disabled students also need attention to face their future. It will also give opportunity for the international volunteers about the treatment that should be done by the families of disabled children.

We believe that the impact of the international volunteers in rural communities is an important stimulus to open minds and reduce prejudices. We work a lot with rural areas to transmit these values to the villagers.
The main objective of the international volunteer project is cultural exchange between the volunteers and the local villagers. The participants in the project will also practically work in the communities, getting involved in several kinds of support and development works, such as construction of a village house or a school, etc. The exact nature of the work will depend of the needs of the village at the time of the project.
Study theme: The volunteers will learn about the culture of rural Thailand in general and the traditions and specificity of the Central region. Thai language lessons will also be given to the volunteers.

Special requirements: No special profile is required for this project, but having experience in construction work will be appreciated. Nature lovers and ethnologists will particularly enjoy the project. Adaptability is required from the volunteers.
Project language: English
Location: The project will be held in the Singburi region (Central Thailand). Sing Buri is 142 km north of Bangkok on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. It was established in the year 1895 during the reign of King Rama V. The province currently occupies an area of 822 square kilometres. - You will be working closely (although perhaps virtually) with Bolder Giving’s director and operations manager.

The full position will need at least 4 hours a week for at least 4 months. But we can create smaller pieces if necessary. Internships available.

*To apply:
Please look thoroughly at our website www.boldergiving.org, including the new beta pages. Then send a brief email to the craigslist address above, telling us a little about your skills, interests, time availability, and what excites you about Bolder Giving’s work.
Have you been feeling down or depressed lately? If so, do you have unusual experiences where it seems that people are out to give you a hard time or to hurt you; do you hear, see, feel, smell, or taste things that other people do not experience?

If you have these symptoms, you may be suffering from a specific type of Major Depressive Disorder and may be eligible to participate in a treatment study at Massachusetts General Hospital. The purpose of this research study is to examine the effectiveness and safety of Seroquel when it is taken alone, compared to when it is taken in addition to an antidepressant, in the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder with Psychotic Features. You may be eligible if you are between the ages of 18-85 years.

The study involves 9 weekly visits to the DCRP. All subjects in this study will receive active treatment, and will be assigned by chance, like the flip of a coin, to take either Seroquel alone, or the combination of Seroquel and an antidepressant (Sertraline, Citalopram or Escitalopram).

For more information, please contact the research coordinator Rita at 617-724-9142.
We invite families who have a baby (6 months or younger) and also have an older child with a language disorder. If selected for the study, we will measure your baby’s response to pictures and sounds using non-invasive methods. He or she will also play with toys, and interact with experienced professionals. Parents will be invited to keep a home diary about their children’s developing skills. Babies usually love it and parents find the feedback extremely informative. This is an investigational therapy to study the eyes and kidneys’ response to the renin inhibitor, Aliskiren (a drug, which blocks renin, a protein made by the kidney). Subjects will receive intravenous (in the vein) infusions on 3 different mornings and will be taking the study drug (Aliskiren or Irbesartan) in pill form for two weeks at home.
Volunteering at the Women's Center is a great opportunity to obtain useful skills in providing support to others and learning about resources in the feminist community. We need volunteers today any time from 2 to 5 who can hand out flyers at Cambridge Central Square for the Bake Sale we are putting on tomorrow. We'd love to see volunteers who can bring a happiness to volunteering and who would love to contribute to our cause to help women. You can call and speak to Ming, our manager or you can come by and just volunteer for this afternoon.
The Women's Center offers a number of support and social groups for women. We also provide groups designed to promote personal growth. Some of our groups are open to all women, while others are open only to women dealing with a specific issue (i.e., domestic violence, child sexual abuse, etc.) The purposes of our group programming are to foster healing, provide support, assist in developing community, and offer information so that women may make informed decisions.

Each month, a calendar of our groups is posted on our website. The calendar is also available by calling 617-354-8807.

The Cambridge Center offers a variety of volunteer opportunities. To volunteer for opportunities - for other than today - please go to our website www.cambridgewomenscenter.org and fill out the volunteer application and let us know what your interests are. We will get back to you about the possibilities that are available at this time.
The Center is also seeking volunteers to:

Unite to Help Neighbors in Need

In a few short weeks, the first wave of unemployment benefits will begin to run out across the state. Anticipating a surge in the number of families needing help with the food and other basics this Thanksgiving season, United Way and Catholic Charities are hosting the Thanksgiving Project on Saturday, November 21, to provide local families in need with holiday food and supplies.
Concerned that the prolonged economic crisis will cause many families to have to make difficult decisions around food and other basic needs this Thanksgiving, we are calling on the community to help donate food and supplies this month to meet the need. We are also looking for volunteers to help pack Thanksgiving foods during the week of November 16th and hand them out on the morning of Saturday November 21st.

To get involved, contact volunteer@supportunitedway.org

Items needed include:
• Non-perishable food items: Canned vegetables, stuffing, cranberry sauce, etc.
• Foil baking pans and other supplies.
• Gift cards that can be spent on food and supplies:
• AFTER November 18: potatoes, pies and other perishable foods.

The current research study is looking for participants between the ages of 18-65, who are depressed and are not currently taking any medication. If eligible, participants will receive the FDA approved antidepressant medication Escitalopram (Lexapro) for at least 10 weeks. At the end of 10 weeks, subjects who have improved on the medication will be offered 3 months of follow up care at no cost. For those subjects who have NOT improved on the medication, they may be eligible to continue on Lexapro and receive, in addition, either Ziprasidone or placebo. Placebo is sometimes called a sugar pill, and it looks like a study drug but it doesn’t contain any active medication. At the end of the study, all participants will be offered 3 months of follow up care at no cost.
As a result, we have various volunteer opportunities available including packing bags, taking inventory, distributing food bags, and providing general support. Volunteer times are listed below:

If you are in need of a kidney transplant and have family members and/or friends who wish to donate but are the wrong blood type or otherwise incompatible, perhaps a paired donation program such as the New England Program for Kidney Exchange (NEPKE) might be able to help you find a kidney.

In kidney paired donation your incompatible living donor donates their kidney to the recipient in another incompatible pair. In exchange you would receive a kidney from a donor in that or another incompatible pair.

For more information about kidney paired donation, please reply to NEPKE for more information or go to www.NEPKE.org to visit our website. NEPKE is a program of New England Organ Bank, a nonprofit, charitable organization.

If you have considered being a living kidney donor, your single kidney donation may be able to save the lives of two or three people by participating through a kidney paired donation program like the New England Program for Kidney Exchange (NEPKE) program of New England Organ Bank, a nonprofit, charitable organization.

NEPKE works with kidney donors like you to maximize your life-saving gift by matching you with someone who desperately needs a kidney and has a friend or family member willing to donate but is the wrong blood type. We will then match the friend or family member of the recipient of your kidney to donate to someone else in need of a kidney. In this way, your gift could set off a chain of donations through paired matches that can save many lives.

For more information about this type of living kidney donation please reply to NEPKE for more information or go to www.NEPKE.org to visit our website.

This year the hurricane Jimena has lashed the city of Guaymas leaving an important level of rain. 2009 is the year when it rained the most (in the last 50 years) and this caused an important damage to the population of Guaymas and to the city. The hurricane affected people of all backgrounds, leaving a lot of people in the middle of nowhere since they lost everything they had. Everything was affected, public buildings, leisure areas, houses, schools, there was no place that was not affected.
This international volunteer project is organized in order to help in the reconstruction of the city of Guaymas with the support of motivated volunteers. There are many things to be done since there were several areas seriously affected. We need help to clean beaches, to rebuild sportive spaces, to clean up parks and community spaces, to fix roads, to help in rural communities by giving health workshops.
After the hurricane, the children affected don’t have a place to continue their studies, they lost everything they had for their education: material, furniture, the roof collapsed and the walls were damaged because of the water and humidity. For that reason, at this first stage, the goal of the project is renovating and reconstructing two schools damaged by the Jimena Hurricane, so the children affected can return to their educative activities as soon as possible and in a clean and healthy environment, appropriate for their development and with the support of the international volunteers. This project will benefit 25 families for the first school and 180 families for the second school.
Volunteers will help with the reconstruction of the two schools affected. They will help with reconstruction activities such as painting walls, reforestation, and cleaning the schools. They will contribute to renovate these structures through scratching and painting walls, and will also do some artistic work such as painting murals on the walls of the schools with the help of local volunteers with landscapes and thematic appropriate for the children. The volunteers will also help planting trees and reforesting the affected area, making and putting signals and signs.
Age range: 18 and over
Location: Morelia is a beautiful historic city, and capital of the state of Michoacán. Founded almost 500 years ago, the city has a wonderful central zone with buildings dating back to the time of the Spanish conquest as well as all the more modern attributes (shops, bars, cafés, etc). The city's population is over 1 million and the climate is moderately warm, with daytime temperatures ranging from 20-35º C. Morelia is well connected to a variety of great places to visit, such as Pátzcuaro, and the ancient Purépecha capital Tzintzunzan.

For more details visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-mexico.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400 (US); 604-628-7400 (Canada)

For volunteer opportunities in other countries click here: www.cadip.org

It is one of the most tourist places in the region and has a lot to offer to the visitor. Its laidback atmosphere and amazing beaches give it a very distinctive touch. It is also the home of Auroville, a famous international community created by the Guru Sri Auro Bindo.
The volunteer project is organized in cooperation with an active local NGO in the field of education and renovation. In the past years many schools and villages have benefited from the work done by international volunteers, including the 2004 Tsunami-hit regions. A shelter for children and old aged people was opened in a village 10 km from the city, providing support to the poorer sections of the population in the district. The volunteers will be involved in various activities ranging from manual work at the center, creative and entertainment activities in schools and kindergartens and spreading awareness on issues related to education, environment protection, health and hygiene. The pagoda is now a place of charity for unlucky children and also helps treat diseases. Now, the pagoda is taking care and bringing up more than 200 children in the South of Vietnam. The children here have unfortunate backgrounds as many have been abandoned by their parents and relatives. The head monk sometimes receives phone calls from hospitals requesting him to take in abandoned babies. At the moment, about 200 children are living in the Pagoda, their ages ranging from 5 days old to 40 years old. 90 of these are orphans that are suffering from cerebral-palsy, blindness or Down's syndrome. At present, about 30-40 local children have a chance to study at Ky Quang as some local teachers teach Vietnamese for them in the morning.
Volunteers will spend time with the children and help improving their English, organizing games and other activities for them. Volunteers will also help redecorating the houses and classrooms, planting vegetable, cleaning the area. Lunar New Year festival for orphans in Saigon
February 1 - February 11, 2010

TET Festival is Vietnamese traditional New Year Holiday (following Lunar Calendar) which usually falls into mid January – mid February. This is the time for family reunion and visits to friends and relatives. Like the Christmas and New Year in western countries, people here prepare a lot for this holiday, from renovating their houses, making cakes and a lot of food and drinks. However, in the orphanages, children do not have enough to prepare for their holiday. Most of them stay in the orphanage or centers over the Tet, only some of them go back to their home villages. Thus, there is need to prepare something for those children, so they still have good time and enjoy such big holidays.
In Ho Chi Minh City area, an international workcamp will be set up to prepare Tet holidays in Ky Quang Orphanage and Chua La Orphanage.
Volunteers will help renovating the houses, cleaning the site and making Chung Cake (traditional cake for children in Tet).

SPEAK UP FOR DEFENCE-LESS ANIMALS
Many people do not know they are increasing animal suffering by making their own daily choices.

We need people who feel deeply enough about animals such as these Animals at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O52lcG5sOF4 to spread their message around.

You can play an important role in broadcasting animal -related issues and educating the masses on the internet by creating a myspace and facebook account, or better still create your own blog / website. E.g. http://www.Heart4Animals.com

Are you able to spend some time about 2-3 times a week to find animal -related news to post blog entries ?

I started updating this website with animal-related news because I got to see images of what happens to animals hidden away from our sheltered city lives.

The more people know what animals go through, the more people will refrain from buying products which will further increase animal suffering e.g. fur / fur-lined outercoats.

Do you or if you know of anyone who know Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Farsi, or any other language ? These are enormous markets that not exposed to the cruelty involved in the animal trade, and also, the animal organizations have not been able to penetrate into these markets deep enough. (e.g. see http://www.heart4animals.com/?s=korea )Try to enlist people who know such language to start blogs / facebook and myspace accounts to spread the message around.

Please tell your friends / relatives about the horrible cruelty involved at http://www.heart4animals.com/?s=china+fur+signatures to raise their awareness. Thank you.

There is a possibility that Aliskiren may be useful in preventing injury to the kidneys of people with hypertension and diabetes.

Non-Profit Mentoring Agency in need of Volunteer Cleaner (727 Atlantic Ave. (near South Station))

Adoption & Foster Care Mentoring is a Boston-based non profit that is looking for someone to help clean a modest office space once every other week after work hours. Cleaning tasks would involve basic vacuuming, taking out the trash, and cleaning the bathrooms and common areas. Job would not be time intensive and would be much appreciated as all non profits work on extremely tight budgets. Below is a bit about Adoption & Foster Care Mentoring. Email cory@afcmentoring.net with questions or interest. Thanks!

Most youth in foster care will move between six and eleven times during their childhood. More than half change school five or more times. With so many transitions, it's hard for youth in the foster care system to have any stability in their lives. Imagine bouncing around from home-to-home, never settling in or learning many things most youth take for granted - how to swim, ride a bike, apply for a job.

AFC Mentoring and our mentors provide the stability needed to overcome these hardships, however. When a youth is in the AFC mentoring program, he/she is much better equipped to handle things like school and social situations. Mentors are the consistent, supportive guidance that youth in foster care need in their life. Our mentors are not social workers or parents; they are simply positive, adult role models. Most importantly, they are a friend.

One mentor can make the key difference in a foster or adopted youth's life. That one mentor could be you. Our mentors spend time with their mentees doing things like going to the park, to a museum, to the zoo, anything they enjoy doing together. Through AFC, mentoring matches have gone to Red Sox games and Celtics games. It's a great way to explore the city and see Boston through youthful eyes. For the mentor, it is gratifying to have fun in the short term as well as to watch a youth mature over time.

Mentors must be over 18. In addition to an information session, each potential mentor must fill out an application before interviewing with a Program Coordinator. After that, the potential mentor will be asked to attend two, three-hour information sessions (done either on one Saturday, or two weeknights). Each mentor will additionally be subject to a criminal background check, a sex offender background check, and an FBI fingerprint check.

Mentor ... It only takes one to change two lives.

We will give your child a free picture of his or her brain on a CD, so that you may reproduce the photo for any desired use (e.g., a computer screensaver!). You and your child also will receive $30 at each of the study visits. Parking is free. You or your child may choose to stop participating at any time. This will not affect your care at Children’s Hospital in any way.

By volunteering, your child will contribute to important medical research on the possible causes of chronic pain in affected children and adolescents.

Please contact Athena Drosos, one of the study researchers, at 781-216-1199 or at athena.drosos @childrens.harvard.edu for more information.
