Native English speakers needed for a language study at Harvard (Harvard Square, Cambridge)

We are looking for native speakers of American English for a language processing study at Harvard University. Currently we are testing speakers who were born and grew up in the USA or Canada, and spoke English as their first and only language in childhood. The first task involves reading a series of sentences on a computer screen, and answering some questions about their content. There is also a second task, which involves rating the acceptability of a series of sentences in colloquial speech. The study takes about 40-60 minutes to complete.

The payment for the study is $10/hour. To be eligible, you must be a native speaker of American English, as defined above, and be between 18 and 35 years old. You must be able to complete the task described. We are located by the main University campus in Cambridge, several blocks from the Harvard T station. Scheduling for the study is flexible, and weekend and evening times are available.

If you'd like to participate, or find out more about the study, please contact us at the email address above. Thank you for your interest!

Lunar New Year festival for orphans in Saigon
February 1 - February 11, 2010

TET Festival is Vietnamese traditional New Year Holiday (following Lunar Calendar) which usually falls into mid January – mid February. This is the time for family reunion and visits to friends and relatives. Like the Christmas and New Year in western countries, people here prepare a lot for this holiday, from renovating their houses, making cakes and a lot of food and drinks. However, in the orphanages, children do not have enough to prepare for their holiday. Most of them stay in the orphanage or centers over the Tet, only some of them go back to their home villages. Thus, there is need to prepare something for those children, so they still have good time and enjoy such big holidays.
In Ho Chi Minh City area, an international workcamp will be set up to prepare Tet holidays in Ky Quang Orphanage and Chua La Orphanage.
Volunteers will help renovating the houses, cleaning the site and making Chung Cake (traditional cake for children in Tet).

The pagoda is now a place of charity for unlucky children and also helps treat diseases. Now, the pagoda is taking care and bringing up more than 200 children in the South of Vietnam. The children here have unfortunate backgrounds as many have been abandoned by their parents and relatives. The head monk sometimes receives phone calls from hospitals requesting him to take in abandoned babies. At the moment, about 200 children are living in the Pagoda, their ages ranging from 5 days old to 40 years old. 90 of these are orphans that are suffering from cerebral-palsy, blindness or Down's syndrome. At present, about 30-40 local children have a chance to study at Ky Quang as some local teachers teach Vietnamese for them in the morning.
Volunteers will spend time with the children and help improving their English, organizing games and other activities for them. Volunteers will also help redecorating the houses and classrooms, planting vegetable, cleaning the area. It is one of the most tourist places in the region and has a lot to offer to the visitor. Its laidback atmosphere and amazing beaches give it a very distinctive touch. It is also a prime location for learning yoga and meditation in one of its many ashrams. It is also the home of Auroville, a famous international community created by the Guru Sri Auro Bindo.
The volunteer project is organized in cooperation with an active local NGO in the field of education and renovation. In the past years many schools and villages have benefited from the work done by international volunteers, including the 2004 Tsunami-hit regions. A shelter for children and old aged people was opened in a village 10 km from the city, providing support to the poorer sections of the population in the district. The volunteers will be involved in various activities ranging from manual work at the center, creative and entertainment activities in schools and kindergartens and spreading awareness on issues related to education, environment protection, health and hygiene. The idea is to tackle the burning issues that the rural population is facing.

For more details, please visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-india.htm

Volunteer opportunities in other countries: www.cadip.org/workcamps.htm, t: 617-502-0400 (US), 604-628-7400 (Canada)

Do you think it is important to increase funding for research into finding a cure for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis?

Then please help bring the Psoriasis Walk to the Boston area in 2010!

You can make a difference by helping plan the walk, recruiting walkers, and coming up with fun ideas for family-friendly entertainment. People with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis -- and their friends and families -- will be grateful for your efforts, and money raised will support Psoriasis Cure Now, a nonprofit group pushing for a cure for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

We need someone -- you? -- to bring the Psoriasis Walk to Boston!

Our nonprofit group, powered by volunteers, had 4 successful Psoriasis Walks in 2009 (pictures and info: www.psoriasiswalk.org). We are expanding the program to serve more people with psoriasis and promote awareness, so we can unlock more funding to find a cure.

The Western Ghats is India's prime zone for bio-diversity, known for its number of animal and plant species in this region. A Marine Turtle protection project has been started here in co-operation with the Forest Department of the State of Karnataka. Over a 60-kilometer stretch of beach, surveys are conducted and the turtle nests are protected until the hatching of the eggs. In 2007, more than 1500 baby turtles reached the ocean safely thanks to the efforts of international volunteers. This year again we continue these efforts. The projects will also focus on spreading awareness to the general public and in the schools about the importance of turtles in the bio-diversity.

It has the features of a modern, forward-looking society which are complemented by a close connection to beautiful nature.
The population of the Reykjavik Capital Area is about 200,000. Reykjavik is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean on almost all sides. In the summer, you can sit by the harbour at midnight and watch the sun dip slightly below the horizon before it makes its way up again.
The world’s northernmost capital is framed by the majestic Mt. Inspired by the theories of Rudolf Steiner, Sólheimar has focused on cultivating both the individual and the environment and it is the first community in Scandinavia to practice organic farming.
Today, Sólheimar (the home of the sun) is a charming village of about 100 inhabitants, renowned for its international, artistic and ecological atmosphere, which prides itself on its varied cultural, social and sporting activities. The village is only a one-hour drive from Reykjavik.
The volunteers will mostly work in the Ölur Forestry Centre (the only organic reforestation centre in Iceland) and in the Sunna Organic Cultivation Centre. During the project, other tasks may arise depending on the needs of the community. The work in Ölur, and in the village as well, will mostly consist in building paths and planting trees in Southern Iceland Farm Forest. WHAT:	Donate Your Computer Equipment, used radio and TV transmitting equipment For Reuse In Schools in Developing Countries

Expand minds, not landfills! Donate your working computer equipment (Pentium III and IV only) for reuse by young people in schools, libraries, and community centers in developing countries. Volunteers from the Boston Office of World Computer Exchange (WCE, www.WorldComputerExchange.org) will be accepting, testing and packing donated used, working Pentium 3 and 4 computers.. Equipments are accepted for drop off any time at WCE’s Hull location, or via mail. Businesses, institutional donors, or individuals wishing to make special arrangements should contact us for more details.

With 700 volunteers, WCE is the largest US non-profit provider of reused computers to connect youth in developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Studies show that the reuse of a computer is 25 times more carbon efficient than destroying one and re-manufacturing a new one. Our volunteer chapters in cities across the US and Canada have helped us prepare and ship over 26,000 donated computer sets since our first shipment in 2000.

At the same time, our work also helps to implement the UN’s Millennium Development Goals in Education, bridging the disturbing global divides in information, technology understanding, and opportunity.

Are you currently taking an antidepressant, such as Zoloft, Celexa, Lexapro or Prozac, and still feel depressed? Would you like to try brief psychodynamic psychotherapy to treat your depression?

We Need:

Depressed men and women age 18 - 60, currently on SSRI or SNRI treatment, for a research study examining the usefulness of two neuroimaging tests in predicting whether someone with depression will get better when they are treated with a type of talk therapy called psychodynamic psychotherapy. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a type of treatment that explores better ways of coping with depression and other life problems.

Eligible participants will receive 16, 50-minute psychotherapy sessions, which will be billed to you or to your health insurance company in the usual way.

Additionally, at five times throughout the study, you will come to the Depression Clinical and Research Program to do a series of tasks. We will also ask you to come in for a follow-up visit three months after the end of your psychotherapy sessions. Each of these visits will last about 1.5 hours. The total amount you will receive for completing these visits is $155.

15 eligible participants will have the option of having two positron emission tomography (PET) scans, for which compensation will be provided based on the time commitment ($75 per scan).
Although it remains among the most traditional areas of the country, it is also the poorest and less developed part in terms of infrastructure or industry; creating a huge rural exodus and migration from the Isan inhabitants to Bangkok. The Khueang Nai District administration wants to dynamize the Deng Mor rural areas and stimulate English learning through the international volunteers' presence. The main target group of the project will be young people and children. Inside this larger framework, each project will address the specific target group in different villages in the Deng Mor area.
Cultural exchange is the main work of the project. The volunteers will discover the typical Isan culture and traditions, visiting villagers, farmers and local artisans, helping them in their tasks. The volunteers will also hold English teaching workshops for the children of several district villages. The exact nature of the work will depend of the needs of the village at the time of the project.
Study theme: The volunteers will learn about the culture of rural Thailand in general and the traditions and specificity of the Isan region. Thai language lessons will also be given to the volunteers.
Special requirements: A correct level of English language and the will to teach it to kids is obviously necessary. The volunteers need also to be motivated to discover Thai culture and to present the one of their country of origin.
Leisure time: Leisure time will be organised by the volunteers with the support of the group leader. The closest city is far but accessible. The region isn't very tourist attractive as such but the nature is of extraordinary beauty: rice fields, small temples and natural parks are all over the region.
New years Eve, according to the Thai Buddhist calendar takes place in April. The volunteers in the April group will have the great chance to attend the ceremonies and festivities in the village with the local population.
Accommodation: The volunteers will be hosted in a traditional Isan house in the community and have access to the same basic conditions as any villager.
Location: The Deng Mor sub-district area is about 20 km far from Khueang Nai city and 60 km north west of Ubon Ratchatani city, in the Isan region, North east of Thailand.
Age range: 18 and over

For more details visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-thailand.htm

For volunteer opportunities in other countries go to: www.cadip.orgor give us a call:
  617-502-0400

     604-628-7400

For example, children between the ages of 6 to 12 will be provided with educational courses, and the older children are able to attend vocational training courses at the centre.

Samcheok is a city of tourism with beautiful beaches and a cave. But the standard of living is poor and especially, education facilities are not enough for the local community. The host organization is a local church and they run local children's center to provide educational and cultural opportunities to children. They offer not only studying with books but also various extracurricular activities to them. Musical team and Korean traditional music performance team, which are particular offering of this center, perform a road show for local people. The host wants to give the kids an intercultural experience through the volunteers' participation. You can also feel the typical warmth and kindness of rural Korean community.

Volunteer work: Together with Korean volunteer(s), the international participants will organize and manage cultural and education programs such as foreign languages (mainly English), outdoor activities, etc. for the children who attend the local Children's Center.
