What exactly is a RotoZip? The RotoZip bills itself as a "spiral saw", but that only tells part of the story. A high speed motor drives a "blade" that looks a lot like a high speed drill bit, at 30,000rpm. In terms of versatility, the RotoZip can do the tasks of a Dremel tool, many of the tasks of a reciprocating saw, a jig saw, a scroll saw and a sabre saw-- all in one unique tool that weighs less than three pounds.

Cuts a wide range of materials. There are a number of different types of blades (called "Zip Bits" by the manufacturer) available for the RotoZip, which allows you to cut a wide range of materials. During the remodel, I used it to cut holes for electrical boxes in mounted sheetrock, to cut a hole for a sink in a wood countertop, to cut ceramic tile (With the RotoZip you can make "weird" cuts that are impossible to achieve with a tile saw and/or tile nippers), and to cut a sheet of clear acrylic. All of these jobs were accomplished quickly, easily and with far less mess than if I had used other kinds of saws.

Helpful features: There are several other features that makes the RotoZip easy to use. Changing blades takes moments, using the included wrench, and the wrench actually stores in a small compartment built into the tool, itself. There is an adjustable "collar" around the rotating blade, which you can set to specific working depths. Thus, when I needed to cut sheetrock, I could set the working depth to the thickness of the sheetrock, allowing me to cut without concern about cutting into a wall stud. Finally, the standard electrical cord is a handy 10 feet long, so most jobs can be done without having to find an extension cord.

It is a small and lightweight tool, but can be used equally well for light "hobby projects" as for more serious remodeling tasks.

Craftsman has expanded the use of laser technology by adding a laser-cutting guide to a 7-1/4-in. circular saw. A precise laser-light line helps the operator increase accuracy and cutting efficiency. To enhance the laser beam�s visibility, especially when cutting outdoors in direct sunlight, a pair of impact-resistant, red colored safety glasses is included.

The saw features a class IIIa laser housed in the upper blade guard. Its lens is recessed and protected by a clear shield. The laser can be activated at the push of a button. Upon activation, the saw�s laser light is projected through a series of prisms that produce an intense red laser beam directly in line with the blade�s cutting path � extending from the saw�s base plate onto the workpiece and up to two-to-four feet in front of the saw.

The saw is powered by a 14-amp (3.2 peak hp) motor with a 5,000-rpm, no-load cutting speed. The motor has heavy duty-machined gearing for efficient power transmission and permanently lubricated ball bearings for long life.

The circular saw�s ergonomically designed contoured rear handle and front assist handles feature textured rubber grips that provide comfort and control.
