Volunteering at the Salem Film Fest (Salem and North Shore)

Energetic filmlovers needed to help mount a great New England cultural event, the 2010 Salem Film Fest, held this year between February 26 and March 4. Entering its third year, this important all-volunteer festival is emerging as one of America's leading all-documentary film festivals, presenting the year's best films from around the world. Many of the docs showcased over the past two years have been subsequently presented on PBS (BUDDHA'S LOST CHILDREN), HBO (IN A DREAM), or European Public Television, nominated for Oscars (TROUBLE THE WATER), or picked up for theatrical distribution (ANVIL: THE STORY OF ANVIL).

Volunteer opportunities are strategic and targeted and are suitable for self-starters who want to be part of something exciting and fun. Past volunteers have found the Salem Film Fest to be an excellent networking opportunity which, for some has led to paid contract work with festival participants, sponsors, or colleagues.

For individuals in vocational transition, this opportunity can represent a resume-worthy and rewarding short-term project with much upside.

Volunteer opportunities are open for educators (reaching out to area high schools and colleges), film and video professionals (compiling trailers, working on in-Festival production teams, and creating presentation DVDs), development experts (contacting existing and prospective film sponsors), writers and publicists (writing articles, blogs, and press releases; integrating social network technologies; distributing posters, schedules and other print materials), hospitality (providing transportation and other logistics for visiting filmmakers from America and Europe), and film advocates (adopting a particular film in order to nurture its audience).

Although volunteers do not receive cash compensation, participants who contribute at least 40 hours to the festival will receive free admission to all Salem Film Fest films and events, including more than 34 film screenings, numerous fun events, and the gala Oscar Party on Sunday, March 6. The total cash-equjivalent value for 40-hour volunteers exceeds $400.

Interested individuals can apply for a limited number of volunteers slots by replying to this post with an email stating a) name and contact information; b) qualifications or area of expertise; c) area of interest (from list above); d) availability between now and February 26, and e) reasons for wanting to become involved.

All ages, genders, ethnicity, etc., are welcome.
