When you see a scanner with a 50-sheet, duplexing ADF built into its top cover, like the HP Scanjet 5590, it's a safe bet that it's designed to scan multipage documents for OCR and to fax, copy, and manage business documents. But the 5590 also scans photos at reasonably high quality, and it even does a credible job on slides.

The 2,400 optical by 2,400 mechanical pixels per inch (ppi) is the minimum resolution required for reasonable slide scans, and it's far more than enough for business applications. One measure of the actual resolution is that even at the default 300 ppi for OCR, the automated OCR module managed to read Times New Roman and Arial text as small as 8-point without a mistake on our tests. That earns the scanner a rating of very good in this category. This unit also comes with ReadIris Pro 8.0 for those who want to use a stand-alone OCR program rather than the automated module.

Photo scan quality was just short of excellent. Scan speed varied from 7 to 29 seconds for the prescan, depending on how much time the scanner needed to warm up. Similarly, scanning to Photoshop with the Twain driver and saving the file took 7 to 27 seconds. What holds the 5590 down to a 3.5 rating for photos is that it can't digitally remove scratches and dust or minimize graininess, although there is an option for enhancing colors in faded photos. These more sophisticated features are typically found in such scanners as the Microtek ScanMaker 6100 Pro, which is designed more for photos than for office scanning.

The transparency adapter works reasonably well, but it's a little clumsy to use. You have to remove it from the scanner's platen when you're not using it. The scans offer unusually good dynamic range for a flatbed scanner: On our tests, the 5590 managed to maintain detail in both light and dark areas in a slide of a dark tree line against a bright sky with white clouds.

At least as important as the Scanjet 5590's scan quality is that it's easy to use, with such conveniences as scan buttons on the front panel, well-designed software, and simple installation with a high-speed USB 2.0 connection. If you need a moderate-duty office scanner�and particularly one that can handle photos well�put the 5590 on your short list.

This is a famous Thorens TD 320mk3 High End Turntable, with nice tonearm, great suspension, auto-stop/lift at end of record, with a black Ash wood finish, metal trim and fittings, massive platter, belt, fancy upgrade mat, and the original power supply.

These famous Swiss/German turntables are well known for lasting decades, sounding great and with the superb suspension, also not being subject to feedback the way most record players are. The 320s always got great reviews as a wonderful, durable value for the money, far less costly than competitor gear.

Everything works, viscous damped cueing, autostop lifts at the end of the record. Massive NON-ferrous zinc alloy platter is terrific for speed stability and solid bass, with the heavier inner platter the lesser Thorens players lack, and a much heavier bearing. Includes a very rare Carbon fiber filled Sorbothane mat from Canada, discontinued for some time now, which helps damp resonance in the record disk and the platter as well as relaxing static in the disk. A very nice simple upgrade that really works to improve sound from your precious records.

The machine is stock. No mods have been performed but can be asked about, from simple to exotic. The machine is missing it's dust cover which I dropped and shattered irreparably. Didn't matter to me, because for the short time I played it, the machine was kept in a cabinet. If you need one, a used cover may be available, otherwise, they are obtainable online.

This is a very quiet, stable, good sounding player far better than anything anywhere near the price now. This is the last of the reasonably priced players from Thorens, who have double and even tripled their prices in the last few years.

This arm features Thorens' ingenious Frictionless Magnetic Antiskating system, only in their higher model arms. Includes an alloy removable headshell that locks down very tight. Has original so-so factory cables, a worthwhile thing to upgrade. Cables is not Thorens' strength, never has been.

This price does NOT include a cartridge or setup, which is quite different than just slapping a cart on. For a nominal charge, you will have a world-class setup done. I also have carts available from under $100 to get you going, and this arm handles a surprisingly wide array of carts. It looks new because it was barely used at all. It was used to break in a couple of carts, and that's it.

This is a lifetime purchase. You will never need to buy a record player again, and given the resurgence of vinyl, this is a bargain. Look around at what machines in the range of the price this is selling offer and you'll make the right decision.

Myspace instant messager causes system to run very slowly. Computer will be deleted and Windows XP and Microsoft Office for Students and Teachers reinstalled prior to sale. These two items are where the price becomes justified. Tower, monitor, mouse, keyboard, all books, cds, and paperwork received with the computer will be given to purchaser. Has 3 1/2 inch floppy drive and CD burner.
