I'm sorry, but if the South Shore is under siege it is an epidemic of stupidity and ignorance. It's not easy at all to get those drugs. They're expensive and hard to get. Someone needs to be extra vigilant to get enough to develop a bad habit. It's no accident it requires alot of energy, that they should be putting to better use. I would say the biggest reason people become addicted is because they start out trying to sell them and make big money off the misery of others. Then end up eating more than they should.
In the late 90's doctors began prescribing oxys for everything from surgery to back aches. Oxycontin, as any doctor knows, is an FDA approved, medical grade opiate. The opiate family comes from the poppy plant in south east Asia - Thailand, Vietnam, Afghanistan, India, etc. The main illegal drugs that come from it are Heroin and Opium. The main legal drugs are Oxycontin, Morphine, and Codeine with Oxys being the strongest and purest legal drug.
Oxys entered the general population in full force and people got hooked fast. Soon they were being traded like any contraband commodity. People started crushing them and snorting them to get a faster, stronger high. Soon the FDA started reeling in the prescriptions because the black market for the drugs had gotten out of hand. Now the 40mg pill that cost $10 in 1999 cost $40 in 2003. The addicts needed a cheaper substitute and the drug dealers were once again happy to oblige: Heroin.
A $5 match hit could keep you going for 8 hours. Most said to themselves "Well, I'll just stick to the brown stuff and snort it. I don't want to be a junkie." Of course, that only satisfies for so long. Then it's on to the cheaper, better, stronger injectible drug.
I come from an honest, working class family. My grandmothers were both nurses, one grandfather was a cop, the other a mailman. Many of my family are contractors. Some are cops, some are bankers, some are IT professionals, some are engineers. One is a drug addict. Sometimes he steals from my only surviving grandmother. He steals her change, he steals her jewelry. He bounces in and out of jail. He flops with whoever has the most pity for him then he disappears for days. Then he comes back looking for a handout and a place to crash. Then he steals from that person and disappears again.
He's about 10 years younger than me. He was a good kid. I used to take him and my other cousins to the beach when they were kids. He was a pretty gifted athlete even though he never played organized sports. He could surf, snowboard and skate well. He was a pretty happy, well-adjusted kid. He just had the misfortune of growing up near another kid with a mother who took oxys for sciatica or fibromyalgia or some bullshit. She was passed out 80% of the day. Her kid barely ever made it to school when he was 13 years old. By the time they were 16 they were stealing her oxys. Once she caught them they started looking for something to replace it.
I wish that story were unique or rare but it's not. I knew a pretty, young girl who got into a car accident that crippled her body. She was bed ridden for months with nothing to do but take her prescribed oxys and watch TV. No one knew if she'd ever walk again. By the time she did, the first thing she did was get into her friend’s car and go get some heroin. It was literally only nine months from her accident. Her sister was even hotter. Like model hot. She was smart, caring, and going to Northeastern to become a nurse. She was partaking of her sister's prescription, too. When it ran out, they took the leap together. I haven't spoken to either since about 2006 but last I knew they were crashing at some drug dealers house in Rockland and neither of them had jobs. Both had kids, too, probably living in less than optimal conditions.
This is the state of the South Shore now. Only about 15 years removed from my senior year in high school. Did we have issues back then? Sure, there was crack. But crack was the ghetto drug. You'd have to be a complete moron to try it. How did Heroin use become so rampant? Did the level of respect for its addictive properties not get adequately emphasized? Was it the grunge rock of the 90's that glamorized it? Or was it the drug companies realizing a profit regardless of the human cost that they knew existed (2008 profits reported: $2.5 billion).
Lot's of people always think us ice fishermen are nuts but it is a good time. Fire on the ice, beers, cooking up food. It's like tailgating.

Economy
I am a free enterprise advocate who believes that lower taxes can encourage economic growth. Raising taxes stifles growth, weakens the economy and puts more people out of work. Our economy works best when individuals have more of their income to spend, and businesses have money to invest and add jobs. I have been a fiscal watchdog in the state legislature fighting bigger government, higher taxes and wasteful spending.
Energy and Environment
I support common-sense environment policy that will help to reduce pollution and preserve our precious open spaces. Immigration
I recognize that our strength as a nation is built on the immigrant experience in America. I welcome legal immigration to this country. However, we are also a nation of laws and government should not adopt policies that encourage illegal immigration. Providing driver’s licenses and in-state tuition to illegal immigrant families will act as a magnet in drawing more people here in violation of the law and it will impose new costs on taxpayers. I oppose amnesty, and I believe we ought to strengthen our border enforcement and institute an employment verification system with penalties for companies that hire illegal immigrants.
Veterans
As a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army National Guard, I am uniquely aware of the importance and sacrifice of our men and women serving in the military. I have been a vigorous supporter of legislation providing benefits to returning service members, as well as, benefits for the families of those killed in action. I believe we need to recognize the sacrifice of all of our servicemembers by keeping better track of returning military personnel so they get the services they deserve. That includes providing them with first-class medical care and other benefits to which they are entitled. I am known as a leader on veterans' issues through my work on the Veterans and Federal Affairs Committee, the Hidden Wounds of War Commission, and the Governor's Task Force on Returning Veterans.
Nearly all people who drink, or play violent video games, listen to pop tunes about suicide, or have non-procreative sex, never do anything bad to anyone. On the other hand, people who are leaning towards terrible things always seem to find a will and a way to do their evil deeds.

One guy out of a thousand gun violations from criminals
who don't bother about the niceties of licenses,

"Right now we are looking at this as a road rage incident," said Chief Paul Keenan of the Quincy Police Department, who spoke to reporters at a press conference.
O'Connell's father ran for mayor a few years ago in Quincy, Keenan said, and his family helped build Marina Bay, a landmark luxury development on the waterfront. O'Connell has been charged with assault, attempted murder, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building. He is scheduled to be arraigned later today in Quincy District Court.
Defense Attorney John McGlone vowed today that his client was innocent, saying that he expects him to be exonerated by ballistic tests which will prove that his .45 caliber handgun was not used in the shooting.
"He's shaken up," McGlone said. "He's being accused of a crime he had nothing to do with."
Initial police reports described the shooting as driving a silver car, McGlone said, but O'Connell has a brown Porsche Carrera, which police have impounded.
On Saturday night, Fasano was driving near his home when the driver of a sports car in front of him repeatedly slammed on his brakes, forcing Fasano to slow down, police said. Both cars pulled over on Commander Shea Boulevard near the North Quincy Red Line Station.
The drivers exchanged words, police said, and the other driver pulled out a .45-caliber handgun and shot Fasano in the abdomen. Fasano remains in critical condition at Boston Medical Center.
O'Connell is the son of Peter O'Connell, one of Quincy's most prominent developers who ran for mayor in 1989 but lost by 22 percentage points to Jim Sheets.
Police pointed to several pieces of evidence today tying Robert O'Connell to the crime. Private security cameras at the scene of the shooting captured footage that showed O'Connell fleeing the area in his Porsche, police said. At Marina Bay, more security cameras showed O'Connell returning home.
Police searched O'Connell's condominium at Marina Bay and found several firearms, including two .45-caliber handguns. O'Connell did have a valid permit to carry firearms, Keenan said. That permit has been revoked.
Investigators found a bullet shell casing at the scene of the shooting and doctors recovered a bullet fragment from Fasano's body. Ballistic tests will be performed to determine whether one of the .45-caliber handguns found in O'Connell's apartment fired the bullet.
Fasano joined the Milton Fire Department in 2005 and as a junior member of the force covers vacation and sick shifts. He bounces between firehouses but does not have a specific engine or truck, according to Chief Jack Grant, who was encouraged by the news today that someone had been charged with the shooting.

The standard method of declawing is amputating with a scalpel or guillotine clipper. The wounds are closed with stitches or surgical glue, and the feet are bandaged.
Another method is laser surgery, in which a small, intense beam of light cuts through tissue by heating and vaporizing it. However, it's still the amputation of the last toe bone of the cat and carries with it the same long-term risks of lameness and behavioral problems as does declawing with scalpels or clippers.
A third procedure is the tendonectomy, in which the tendon that controls the claw in each toe is severed. The cat keeps his claws, but can't control them or extend them to scratch. This procedure is associated with a high incidence of abnormally thick claw growth. Therefore, more frequent and challenging nail trims are required to prevent the cat's claws from snagging on people, carpet, furniture, and drapes, or growing into the pads.
Because of its complications, tendonectomy may lead to declawing anyway. Although it's not actually amputation, and thus considered more humane by some, a 1998 study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association found the incidence of bleeding, lameness and infection was similar for both techniques.
Medical drawbacks to declawing include pain, infection and tissue necrosis (tissue death), lameness, and back pain. Removing claws changes the way a cat's foot meets the ground and can cause pain similar to wearing an uncomfortable pair of shoes. There can also be a regrowth of improperly removed claws, nerve damage, and bone spurs.
After a cat is declawed, she can experience litter box problems. Scratching in the litter box after surgery could be painful, leading the cat to associate the box with pain and avoid it. Some cats may become biters because they no longer have their claws for defense.
SCRATCHING IS NORMAL CAT BEHAVIOR. It isn't done to destroy a favorite chair or get even. The Humane Society United States opposes declawing as a way to prevent destructive scratching. Many other countries feel so strongly about the issue that they have banned the procedure. But you don't have to let your cat destroy your house.
Keep his claws trimmed to minimize damage to household items.
Get a scratching post and train him to use it. Purchasing or building a scratching post is an important step in training a cat to avoid destructive scratching.
Glue soft plastic caps (such as Soft Paws) on his nails. They do need to be replaced about every six weeks. Ask your vet for information. Use a special tape (such as Sticky Paws) to deter your cat from destructive scratching.
Declawing and tendonectomies should be reserved only for those rare cases in which a cat has a medical problem that would warrant such surgery, such as the need to remove cancerous nail bed tumors. Declawing does not guarantee that a cat will not be taken to a shelter if other problem behaviors occur, such as biting or not using the litter box.
