Standish has a reduced-cost spay/neuter program in which 26 veterinary hospitals participate. We offer reduced-cost sterilization to owners who cannot afford regular veterinary fees. We work with animal control officers to identify residents who need help with sterilization of their pets. Animal control officers give us lists of people in their towns who need assistance spaying and neutering of their pets, and we provide them certificates for this service. Every cat adopted from our shelter is sterilized. We sterilize every animal we can! The financial expense is high- over $40,000 a year- but we are making a difference!

Why Spay or Neuter Your Pet?

Spay Your Female To: Eliminate the heat cycle; yowling in cats, bloody discharge in dogs. Eliminate complications of pregnancy and delivery. Prevent unwanted litters, only one in 10 puppies and kittens finds a permanent home. Eliminate uterine diseases, ovarian cysts. Reduce the risk of breast cancer, especially if spayed before 2 years of age.

Neuter Your Male To: Reduce urine spraying in cats; reduce urine marking in dogs, reduce strong urine odor in cats. Reduce urge to roam and risk of fights, injury, poisoning or death in traffic. Reduce mounting and aggression. Reduce risk of prostate cancer and infection and perianal hernias. Eliminate testicular tumors.

For Either Sex: Reduce the number of unwanted cats and dogs. Stop mating drive. Reduce risk of injuries and abscesses from fights. Have a calmer, more content, family-oriented healthier pet. Will NOT make a pet fat or lazy. Can be done at any time, but ideal age is 6-8 months.

POPULATION OVERLOAD

Our communities are facing an overload of pet animals. Too many dogs and cats are not wanted anywhere. They are treated like disposable items instead of living creatures. Pets are abandoned when owners tire of caring for them. Unwanted litters are left at doorsteps or along roadsides. Every year in the U.S., approximately 8.6 million cats and dogs are euthanized (killed) because lasting, loving homes cannot be found for them.

You can help end this tragedy by making sure your pet doesn�t contribute to the surplus of dogs and cats. Have your pet spayed or neutered by a veterinarian. If you let your pet breed, you may find homes for that litter, But what happens when each of those puppies or kittens has a litter, when each of those litters produces more litters?

Help reduce the pet populations so that each animal gets the care and respect it deserves.

January 23rd 2010 will be the start date for an intensive in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) at the NonProfit Center - 89 South St. Boston MA.
MBSR is for people who want to fundamentally change the way that they handle stress.

Who should take this class?
Everyone is welcome. Basically, if you have ever said to yourself, "I have to do something about my stress!" you should take this class.

What is Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction?
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a stress reduction technique that uses the mind's ability to be aware. It is beneficial for anyone who wants to cope with stress in a healthy manner.
This technique is used at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center's Center for Mindfulness. Over ten years of medical research is proving that this format of regular meditation practice is a powerful form of complimentary medicine. In addition to helping average people cope with daily stress, this Stress Reduction Training is also helping medical patients cope with the stress that comes from physical symptoms and illnesses. People with fibromyalgia and MS have benefited from this training. Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn introduced the format for this 8 week intensive in his book, "Full Catastrophe Living."

This program is designed to be accessible to all people. No prior experience is necessary. All levels of flexibility are welcome to participate.

The class location is about 100 yards from the front door of South Station.

Eight Fridays 5:30pm to 7:30pm

The NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely. This course is at least 8-hours long (Class size pending) and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Students learn NRA�s rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest position, two handed and one handed standing positions; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. This is an NRA Course taught by a certified NRA Instructor.

At the successful completion of this course you will receive an NRA and Mass. State Police certificate and an NRA Course Completion card to help with your application process.

The course is $150 for individuals. Couples can register for $290

The Skating Club of Hingham's "Skate With Us" program is a US Figure Skating Association
Basic Skills Program for boys and girls (age 4 and older) of all skating abilities.
THIS PROGRAM IS NOT JUST FOR FIGURE SKATERS!!
It teaches basic skating skills for all skaters. Many participants in this program have gone on
to play hockey.
Instruction is provided by members of the professional staff of The Skating Club of Hingham,
assisted by volunteer instructors comprised of senior members of The Skating Club of Hingham.
Groups are kept small to allow for individual attention to student needs. A ratio of 6 students per instructor is attempted.
When students are ready, they are tested and awarded test badges signifying their accomplishments.

The Alden House will once again host spirits from the past and spectators from the present at its eighth annual Haunted House and Trail. The family friendly community event is scheduled for Saturday, October 24 from 6 � 9 p.m., rain or moonlight. Tickets go on sale at 5:45 p.m. Parking and cider are free. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children.

Children are invited to come in costume. Plymouth face painting artist Kathy Rice will liven things up for those in search of a new look. Cost is $3 - $10, depending on complexity. Bring your own camera for before and after photos.
