JOB FUNCTION / PURPOSE

The Tufts Network Engineering Team within UIT is responsible for the design, maintenance, and security of the Tufts University data network. This includes all network services such as DHCP, DNS, and NTP, as well as IP routing and switching, server load balancing, managed firewall services, and VPN services. Network Engineering staff respond 24x7 to events affecting connectivity or security and provide consulting to other IT support units throughout the University.
The successful candidate for the Network Engineer position will be an energetic and highly motivated individual with keen problem solving and customer service skills. As a key member of the Network Engineering team, this position is responsible for the operation, support and surveillance of Tufts´ multi-campus data network. This individual is involved in the operation of a mission critical, highly-resilient network infrastructure, including all wired network switches, core routers, service provider uplinks, next generation wireless platform, load balancers, firewalls, vpn and security systems and related central network services including DNS/DHCP/IPAM. This position will provide installation, configuration and operational support for these systems as well as capacity planning, change control, inventory control and monitoring functions. This individual should also have some systems administration skills and basic proficiency with Unix and Linux operating systems. The Network Engineer will provide network operations, customer service and support to the Frontline Support staff from each of the schools. The successful candidate must possess strong technical and collaboration skills, as well as be customer focused with a results oriented attitude, and must have willingness to learn and grow in this position. The position requires teamwork and the ability to multi-task and balance work load between a few simultaneous projects.
Basic Requirements:
Bachelor´s Degree.
Four (4) years of related experience.
The successful candidate must have work related experience in the design of basic network systems and supporting infrastructure. This position requires demonstrated operations experience with complex routed IP networks, layer two/three switches, advanced routers, firewalls, LAN/WAN networking hardware and protocols. The successful candidate must also have strong IP data networking knowledge and practical network troubleshooting experience. Current hands-on experience in the configuration management and operation of Cisco switches and routers is essential.
Minimum of 4 years of direct experience in the day-to-day configuration, operation and troubleshooting of a complex enterprise data network.
Working experience with networking technologies and protocols including but not limited to TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, OSPF, and Spanning Tree/RST.
The candidate must have the ability to conduct physical work necessary to install network equipment including the ability to use related hand tools such as screwdrivers, drills etc and to lift a minimum of 50lbs. The candidate must also have the ability to travel between the three Tufts campuses (Medford, Boston and Grafton, MA) as needed to assist in the installation and/or repair of network equipment. Occasional overnight travel may be necessary to attend vendor training and/or seminars. The ability to share in an on-call rotation and to provide support outside of normal business hours as needed while on-call and for occasional planned maintenance events.

Special Work Schedule Requirements:
This is a salaried position, and the schedule of such exempt employee may vary based on the needs of the department. Typical business hours are Monday-Friday 9am-5pm with requirement for participation in on-call rotation. Hours and shifts may vary throughout the year such that Network Engineering staff can provide on-site, weekday coverage between 7am-6:30pm. Network Engineering provides critical network services 24x7x365 and the successful candidate will be included in on-call rotation which provides coverage for all hours of the year. Our numbers are small but expected to grow rapidly in the coming year. Right now IT is a one-person shop, but can be expected to expand beyond that soon.
In the server room, it includes support for networking (Linux-based router & firewalls, an OpenVPN server, a relatively simply wireless network), the HPC compute cluster, which runs Ubuntu Linux and Sun/Oracle Grid Engine on a number of compute nodes, and OpenSolaris and ZFS for storage. We have a small smattering of other services (wikis, subversion, some databases). We also contract for CPU cycles with external providers, and have some interest in HPC cloud computing once the economics make sense for us. Our server room and infrastructure is dominated by open source Linux software and you should be well experienced in managing the same, as well as willing to learn new stuff as the need arises.
The IT manager would also help with general infrastructure planning and budgeting, and be a integral part of the growth and increased stability of our general computing operations. The position reports to the COO/CFO.
Some off-hours support may be necessary, though there is no 24 hour pager duty. The job requires good communication skills, a willingness to learn and support exotic new computation techniques, and a good "bedside manner" with users who have widely varying levels of computing expertise.

Your Role
The ideal candidate, working with minimal supervision, must be highly motivated and energized to balance what needs to get done with what should come next. Focused on the end-user issues, this person must practice a positive customer interaction -- his/her primary objective is to make everyone else's job easier. He/she will support our existing IT team in servicing the desktop, software and connectivity needs of over 200 local and remote employees. This person must be detail-oriented, and display strong organizational and time management skills to work in a fast-paced environment.
This is a "trusted" position -- Much of what occurs in this role cannot be discussed with other staff or outside the office. Due to the involvement with employee data as well as candidate information, under no circumstances will any breach of confidentiality be tolerated.
Core Responsibilities
• Troubleshoot and resolve a variety of problems with hardware/software, email, networking issues, phones, A/V equipment and printers/copiers/scanners
• Answer, prioritize, document, and respond to incoming helpdesk requests from MAC/PC users in a timely manner; provide follow-up
• Oversee and manage the installation of new hardware/software and system upgrades while maintaining inventory on all equipment and software
• Create and maintain various reports, documents, procedures and processes
• Provide user training and assistance as needed
• Assist in the procurement and repair of equipment
• Set up workspaces prior to arrival of new employees
• Other duties and projects as needed
• Assisting new employees with setup of voicemail, software, and e-mail accounts
The H&o Administrator will also perform general office tasks:
• Receive packages as they are delivered, particularly IT equipment
• Maintain an organized office; remove boxes/packaging
• Organize the supply areas

Candidates should be experienced with Google Applications, Windows 7 Professional, Microsoft Office 2007/2010, Database Software, VOIP phone systems, printer and copier management, common Cloud-based applications, routers, switches and wireless technologies, and a basic understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP.
• Provide clients with various technical services pertaining to networks, remote access and virtualization, communications, and Internet solutions
• Proactively provide technology recommendations and strategies to clients
• Properly identify challenges, advise, and implement solutions
• Evaluate, recommend, and execute new technologies and update existing infrastructure to ensure optimal network performance
• Develop IT strategies to ensure the network meets existing and future requirements based on needs and regulations
• Participation in proposal content, product research, and sales meetings with prospective clients may be required
Required Skills/Experience:
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
• Certifications strongly preferred: MCSE 2003, MCTS, MCITP, CCNA, CISSP, and VCP
• Minimum of 5 plus years experience with the maintaining, troubleshooting, and supporting of various technology environments
• Prior consulting experience a must
• Candidate must have the ability to work in a variety of environments, have excellent follow-up skills, provide detailed documentation, and be able to work effectively and independently
• Comprehensive understanding of operating platforms, connectivity, security, and information storage
• Must be strong in Windows 2008, 2003, and Vista, both server and desktop
• Deep knowledge of Exchange, Active Directory, and DNS
• Must understand domains, TCP/IP, VPN's, and firewalls
• Working understanding of Blackberry, ActiveSync, etc.
• Experience with virtualization technologies, such as VMware and Citrix
• Outstanding and proven communication at all levels within an organization, project management, and organizational skills required
