4/18-4/22: NEWBURYPORT EARTH DAY CELEBRATION (Newburyport)

Want to sample organic food and drink? Learn about ways to save the city money through recycling and clean energy? Attend a green technology building expo? Help a child build a haycock? Participate in a native garden restoration and learn planting techniques? Listen to nationally-known musical acts? Interact with green art exhibits?

Through the generosity of Chase & Lunt Insurance and the Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank, people of all ages are invited to attend a Newburyport Earth Day Celebration, with the pinnacle of over 25 events occurring the weekend of April 19. In the spirit of Earth Day, all events are free to the whole family!

From healthy meals at The Purple Onion, natural pastries at Praline’s Bake Shop, wellness products at Vitamins, Etc. and breathtaking seascapes at the Spirit of Newburyport Gallery, to a farmer’s market, a high school environmental campaign, educational seminars on nuclear power and climate change, and an interfaith blessing of the Earth, events are hosted by dozens of restaurants, retailers, and organizations in the greater Newburyport region. Business owners stand united with environmental and municipal groups to send the combined messages of energy efficiency and sustainable development directly to households and workplaces, and that anyone can make a lifestyle change to improve the planet and better oneself.

In the wake of a very successful Going Green breakfast last fall and a Green Expo in February, the Newburyport Earth Day Celebration is part of Newburyport’s Going Green Initiative supported by the Seacoast Energy & Environmental Design (SEED) coalition, the Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce & Industry, and the City of Newburyport.

As part of SEED’s mandate to help Newburyport be a greener place to live, work, and play, more green events like Earth Day are being planned throughout the year and into 2009!
