As a sahm who cares for children in my home without certification I have no shortage of parents seeking my services, my first job doing this just sort of happened with a friend and neighbor. When the job came to an end, Mom quit her job, I had another job within a week once someone heard I was no longer working for that family.

I provide a safe and very laid back environment for the children I watch, exactly what these parents want. The children I watch are friends of my children and they play their own games that they make up, spend lots of time outside, sometimes cuddle up on my couch and read a book and even (((shudder))) watch movies. Children do not need constant structure, they need down time too, especially at the end of a long day of school. These parents I work for know me well and trust me, I am not a stranger to them or thier children... this means more to them than any certification.

My kids are school age and some of the things I have seen and/or heard about the afterschool program from these "certified" workers is awful. Certification does not make a childcare worker good.

Parents should go with their gut and do what they think is right for their children. Period.

You are simply angry because a SAHM can watch a child in her home and you are tying to make what you "think" you are sound more important. You are most likely a nanny who does not have children and is angry that a SAHM has all of the qualifications and most likely MORE then you have. So, you try to bash the SAHM because your so called "career" has more competiton then you can handle. If you were that great, had steady employment, you wouldn't be posting things like this. Get a life or better yet, get a career and leave the SAHM alone who most likely has a career, is home wiht her child and has more life experience then you will ever have when it comes to caring for children! A SAHM most likely cares more about the children, how they are playing together and interacting then you who is worried about $$$ and finding employment. Good luck, you sound very bitter! lol

Hi,

SAHM are not seeking to open a "daycare". They are simply offering a family a safe, "family friendly" environment to bring their child or children while they are working and in need of child care.

They are simply "babysitting" in other words and they do not need a license for that.

When you have your home licensed for a "daycare" you are not only caring for children (up to 6 children per 1 adult and no more that 2 infants UNDER one) AND you need to provide a curriculum: music, art/crafts, physical activity, reading, etc.

Many SAHM are not seeking to provide a "school/teacher-like" environment ~ they are simply offering a safe, warm, caring home-like environment.

Don't forget, there are MANY licensed day care providers that DO NOT provide a safe, warm, nuturing environment!

I believe it should be up to the family to decide what they feel most comfortable with. A parent can tell, for the most part, if a daycare or a SAHM's environment is clean, child proofed, safe, etc. They can usually tell right off the bat if they feel comfortable with whom they are hiring.

It's only $100 to license an in home daycare (through MA), but it's not against the law to babysit for a family's child in the safety of your home. If it were, babysitting would be outlawed!

Please be aware that SAHM who are looking to watch your children in their home HAVE TO BE LICENSED BY THE STATE!. Just because they have children of their own or CPR certification does not make them licensed.

Think about the liability if something tragic happens while your child is in their care....Will their home owners insurance cover it...nope. Does their landlord know they are running a business in their building?

A licensed provider is mandated to follow certain rules and regulations to keep your children safe. The provider and everyone living in the home has to pass a CORI. The home has to meet space requirements and safety requirements. They require providers to complete training every year and current CPR and First aid certifications. They require a structured curriculm so the children are learning. They require providers to complete progress reports on your child's milestones and abilities. The homeowner needs to carry a special policy for liability. The state can walk into a licensed child care unannounced to be sure the provider is compliant with the state rules.

No one is watching the unlicensed babysitters. If these SAHM care so much about children..and not just a way to make some extra $$... why don't they just obey the law and get licensed? Is it too much of a hassle for them?

Who do you want watching your children?....Just give it some thought.
