News flash, in case you live under a rock: The middle class has crashed.
Things have been heading this way ever since the condo-flipping craze and the voracious consumption and irresponsible lending of the 1980s. And here we are, in the worst economic conditions since the Great Depression. News flash, in case you live under a rock: The middle class has crashed. There is a growing sector of Americans falling out of relative financial comfort and into poverty. It is hard to chart this because the antiquated government standards for poverty do not reflect inflation or the actual cost of survival across the U.S.
In the current economic environment, a trend has emerged that allows companies to revert to the early Industrial Age view of working people as merely expendable overhead to be slashed, replaceable parts of a machine now standing idle. The country’s money has largely vanished into wars in the last dozen years, money pits as far as our Gross National Product is concerned, instead of going into production of useful things to be sold domestically or abroad. There is little money left here to support the consumer spending that would keep companies afloat to generate more goods and services. And there have been waves upon waves of massive corporate layoffs and company bankruptcies. Our recession seriously impacts the global economy, but it feels as though somebody is after your own, personal wallet.
Families which were barely meeting their expenses on two incomes are now falling deeply into debt, while one or two formerly working adults search for replacement employment. After a few weeks of limbo, during which time there may be no income at all, or fragmented self-employment, the unemployed may be receiving state unemployment insurance benefits that are much lower than wages, while they last.
Do not just wait it out, thinking that this will all right itself soon, and things will go back to the way they were in a few weeks. Use this time to explore all the skills you have that you can exploit to make money in a new way. Spend some time improving the skills you already have, or learning new skills. Create something of value. Promote yourself.
Unless you’re really lazy or a jerk, if the company that employed you laid you off or fired you recently, don’t take your job loss as a comment about your character. There are a lot of good, skilled, highly competent people out of work now. The sudden loss of income, often without a severance package, can be shocking and frightening, but try not to let it make you depressed. You are still you, with or without that job, and there are a lot of people in the same boat with you. It doesn’t mean you are incompetent or a bad person. You will have to find other ways to make yourself useful for a while. Maybe it will result in a whole new kind of employment or self-employment for you.
Maybe you’re one of the lucky people, with a job you like and fair pay. But unless you’re one of a few workers with skills indispensable to the government, or you’ve married into the boss’s family, you have probably experienced some disappointments in any job you’ve managed to obtain or keep in this economic environment, like millions of other Americans.
Although in the U.S. now, we don’t generally have the twelve-hour days with seven-day weeks that we had in the Industrial Age, the quality of treatment of most kinds of workers has even so been declining in the last decade or so. Workers’ privileges, formerly perceived as rights, and the power of unions and groups of workers have been quickly eroded. Job descriptions and promises made at the time of hiring now have little meaning, as workers see their colleagues disappear during "downsizing," and each remaining employee has to take on more and more duties. Get everything you are promised at hiring time in writing. Most average American workers can no longer expect employment stability or even decent treatment for long.
Unlike the consumer protection departments and agencies that oversee and sometimes enforce proper treatment of consumers, and enforce fulfillment of obligations to product and service purchasers, there are no such agencies that oversee and enforce all the unwritten obligations an employer has toward employees. Unless you can unquestionably prove sex, gender, race, or religious discrimination, in most cases, there is very little an employee can do to force a company to treat its workers decently. Especially if both parties are white, or both straight, or both of similar religions, unless you have a photo of your manager groping somebody, you are probably on your own. You have no leverage.
The burden of proof of a company’s inappropriate actions is on the individual worker, through a very long and expensive court process if there is any due process at all. Unions have very little power right now. There is no Attorney General’s office or Banking Commissioner to step in and say, “What’s this I hear about you screaming at your employees every day, and assigning them all the work of laid-off employees?”
Just find work anywhere else that you can, and contract a tort attorney if you wish to sign over to him or her a third of any money you might win in a year or two for wrongful termination or abusive treatment. There is no other part of the American marketplace that works like this. If you don’t like the way you are treated at a given workplace, you will be invited or induced to leave. There is no Lemon Law that covers bad managers. There is no fraud statute that concerns the broken vague hiring promises made by managers to prospective employees. There is no Bill of Rights that addresses how employers have to treat employees. It is not against the law for an employer to take away some of your pay or benefits or treat you like human garbage, as long as no other laws are broken.
Part of standard operating procedure at many American companies now is the expectation that workers have to put up with anything that’s dished out to them, and overlook any benefits that have been taken away. It is assumed that unhappy workers can just get out. Bullying of workers by middle management and sole proprietors is commonplace now. If managers or coworkers feel they don’t have to answer to anyone because of seniority or favoritism, professional behavior and fairness often go out the window. Try not to stoop to this level yourself by becoming emotionally involved, by responding with the same combative behavior. It will hurt any chance you may still have of getting a decent outgoing reference from someone.
Small companies reluctant to have their unemployment insurance rates rise may well try to make some employees so miserable that they quit, rendering them unable to claim a layoff. This is becoming more and more commonplace. When you see a supervisor frequently baiting you or rebuking you for strange reasons or no apparent reason, start looking for work alternatives, talk to the supervisor or someone above that person trying to make you quit, and see if you can strike a deal where the company lays you off or keeps you working part-time, and you don’t take any legal action. Do not call an “Employee Complaint Line,” because all the operators will do is take note of everything you say and give it to the person you’re complaining about, without giving you any effective assistance. True anonymity in these situations is nonexistent.
During the real estate crash of the 1980s, workers joked about their free bottled water and coffee and Wall Street Journals being taken away, but things are a little more serious now. Companies do not care about employee morale and peak productivity. The new rule for employees is: smile, shut up, and get by. If you don't like that arrangement, try to set yourself up in self-employment.
Company picnics and other social events are cancelled, even when employees offer to pay a portion of costs, but that’s nothing. Subsidized meals for employees staying onsite may be discontinued. Health events for employees may be cut. There are no more “exit interviews” to air and address grievances. There is no assistance in finding other employment, no retraining. You will have to do your best to insure and retrain yourself. State unemployment assistance offices may be able to offer you some training and cheap or free health insurance. Pay rates for average workers are frozen or rolled back as upper executives’ compensation remains the same or even increases. This is not only true in the banking and securities and the automobile industries, which have done this flagrantly in recent years--this is becoming pervasive.
Less visible but more common ways of eating away at employees’ benefits and dignity are such things as these: family leave is cut or eliminated in any way allowed by law. Overtime hours without overtime pay, holiday hours without holiday pay and extra shifts without warning have become stated or unstated job requirements in some companies. If a prospective employee does not enthusiastically agree to such terms, that person is not hired. When people becoming so overworked and overstressed from doing two or three people’s work in a frightening environment that they become sick, paid sick days are cancelled to stop the companies loss of productivity, instead of fixing the corporate direction that caused the loss of productivity in the first place. Do not let your employer make you sick!
Employers may have a wave of layoffs, and induce remaining employees to do or not do certain things by promising no more layoffs this year—and then turn around and lay off more people. There are laws about how a corporation must handle its money, market its products and uphold obligations to stockholders—at least when anybody’s looking—but there are no laws against most of the mistreatment of U.S. workers that is now becoming rampant.
Increasingly, the norm is for American companies to hire many employees for a few hours a week, or outsource jobs to countries where there are no civil rights, and give benefit packages, paid holidays and vacations to no one. As far as the enforcement of decent working conditions for the average American employee, we’ve taken a few steps back toward the turn of the last century. But it could be worse.
In China, slews of farmers who gave up growing food for their families to flock to city factories, earning maybe a dollar a day and sleeping twelve to a room, are showing up for work to find that their employer has locked up the building and simply fled. No final check in two weeks, no severance pay, no health insurance, no unemployment compensation. End of the line. Back to driving oxen and flooding rice fields for subsistence out in the Chinese countryside. We have a few more options in the U.S. Let's make sure things stay that way.

I specialize in replication paintings. I paint pictures of homes, paintings of center pieces from weddings, wedding showers, or baby showers. I paint landscapes or just about anything. However I LOVE to paint things that have special meaning behind it!
