This is obviously a sore subject on CL. I figured i would put my two cents in. In response to the post that states : "wouldn't it make you feel better knowing that their are state regulations?"

I personally do not need the government to tell me what environment is safe or not safe for my children, So no. this doesn't make me feel better. I'm working and going to school right now so my children are in the care of a SAHM. I've put them in a licensed daycare and realized that although their day was very structured...they would completely lose it once they were home, because I feel they were overwhelmed and overstimulated. Now they are in the care of this lovely lady who also happens to have become a best friend. Yup. that;s right. Becuase she doesn't watch X amount of kids to meet her quota for the month, she has time to talk to me when i pick up my children.

No matter where you take your children it is your responsibilty to make sure it is safe. a license does not guarantee that and if that is the extent of your inquiry then it's just not good enough. and that license, doesn't guarantee that the provider is a good person. it just manages to say that if they are bad...they haven't been caught yet. so bottom line in my book: LEAVE THE PARENTING TO THE PARENTS. for generations mothers have helped each other. now is defanitely not the time to stop.

As a sahm who cares for children in my home without certification I have no shortage of parents seeking my services, my first job doing this just sort of happened with a friend and neighbor. When the job came to an end, Mom quit her job, I had another job within a week once someone heard I was no longer working for that family.

I provide a safe and very laid back environment for the children I watch, exactly what these parents want. The children I watch are friends of my children and they play their own games that they make up, spend lots of time outside, sometimes cuddle up on my couch and read a book and even (((shudder))) watch movies. Children do not need constant structure, they need down time too, especially at the end of a long day of school. These parents I work for know me well and trust me, I am not a stranger to them or thier children... this means more to them than any certification.

My kids are school age and some of the things I have seen and/or heard about the afterschool program from these "certified" workers is awful. Certification does not make a childcare worker good.

Parents should go with their gut and do what they think is right for their children. Period.

You are simply angry because a SAHM can watch a child in her home and you are tying to make what you "think" you are sound more important. You are most likely a nanny who does not have children and is angry that a SAHM has all of the qualifications and most likely MORE then you have. So, you try to bash the SAHM because your so called "career" has more competiton then you can handle. If you were that great, had steady employment, you wouldn't be posting things like this. Just to add some more important information to the below post: Which I agree with and hope that parents give some serious thought into what can happen when leaving your children with UNLICENSED stay at home moms! (A.) How do you know who's frequenting in and out of their homes? Examples: Their may be a friend or god forbid a family member who may be a child predator "Pedifiles". How do you know who your child is interacting with on a daily basis? Are the children already in the home of the SAHM safe for your child to be around? Example: Neighbors 10 year old son/friend murdered another child! You see this on the news all the time! Yes! there are some licensed child care businesses that fall through the crack, but wouldn't it make you feel better just knowing that their are State regulations? (B). Is your child's safety worth the cost of a licensed regulated day care? Like the old saying goes, you get what you pay for! Parent's we are all feeling the crunch of the failing economy, but please, please, take into consideration your child's safety. Most incidents of child abuse and child molestation occurs from people who you think are friends, and the next door neighbors, and SAHM's who charge less than the licensed facility! (C). Think about those that say they are SAHM's and will charge a lower fee to keep your children: what may be going on in their lives and in their household! (D.) A provider who is licensed by the STATE is regulated by the STATE and must and should when completing the State licensing applications every three years give names of everyone in the household and anyone who frequents their home does indeed have a background check and CORI. Anyone appling for their license and fails to pass this investigation does not recieve their license: with all this said; look at your child and ask yourself who would you rather trust your child be with? And what is the cost to your child? Yes! I do agree with the below posting!

Please be aware that SAHM who are looking to watch your children in their home HAVE TO BE LICENSED BY THE STATE!. Just because they have children of their own or CPR certification does not make them licensed.

Think about the liability if something tragic happens while your child is in their care....Will their home owners insurance cover it...nope. Does their landlord know they are running a business in their building?

A licensed provider is mandated to follow certain rules and regulations to keep your children safe. The provider and everyone living in the home has to pass a CORI. The home has to meet space requirements and safety requirements. They require providers to complete training every year and current CPR and First aid certifications. They require a structured curriculm so the children are learning. They require providers to complete progress reports on your child's milestones and abilities. The homeowner needs to carry a special policy for liability. The state can walk into a licensed child care unannounced to be sure the provider is compliant with the state rules.

No one is watching the unlicensed babysitters. If these SAHM care so much about children..and not just a way to make some extra $$... why don't they just obey the law and get licensed? Is it too much of a hassle for them?

Who do you want watching your children?....Just give it some thought.
