EDITOR, NEW MEDIA
The editor is responsible for finding, acquiring, and managing content providers to produce videos, workshops, and other potential products. This position also acquires and manages all aspects of strategic relationships with select affiliates, such as online training companies. Primary duties include finding partners and authors, vetting talent and content, negotiating contracts, content submission deadline tracking, and building relationships. The editor also communicates regularly with Learning Division staff to ensure all projects are on-track and in line with the goals of the division and the company. The content area covered by the editor is primarily targeted to developers, programmers, and other software professionals. This position reports to the General Manager of the Learning Division and is located in Cambridge, MA.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Vet potential talent and organizations to ensure they meet OReilly standards and objectives
Acquire original material
Acquire existing material through partnerships with other companies
Track projects and monitor deadlines
Manage product P&Ls
Communicate with development editors and producers
Contribute to course development
Participate in business development and strategy planning
Manage new projects and initiatives
Work with marketing personnel in the promotion of products and services
Develop and maintain an authoritative knowledge of all markets related to software development, including staying current with developments and strategies in emerging competitive markets
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS
4-year college degree in communications, publishing, computer science, or other related field, or combination of relevant education and experience
3+ years work experience as an editor in technology topic areas
3+ years work experience acquiring editorial projects
Advanced knowledge of technical topics and communities
Advanced knowledge of editorial concepts, video and electronic media processes and functions editorial, managing editorial, production, design, copyediting, and how they interface
Acute business acumen strong working knowledge of how products, communities, and revenue tie together
Ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines
Ability to establish and grow relationships
Ability to adapt, remain agile, and maintain comfort in switching gears quickly and often
Strong interest and ability in building a business with an emphasis on new media delivery options
Ability to understand, negotiate, and explain publishing and/or services contracts
Ability to work on tight deadlines
Ability to write clearly and accurately on technical subject matter
Ability to effectively communicate with customers, vendors, multimedia developers, project managers, marketing managers, and sales reps
Ability to understand the needs and concerns of development editors
Ability to maintain high professional standards in interacting with others, inside and outside of the company
Ability to commit to delivering valuable educational experiences to students
Ability to experiment, with a strong appreciation for ambiguity
Ability to travel up to 15% of the time
Excellent written, presentation, and verbal communication skills
Finely-tuned organizational skills and attention to detail
Strong editorial and project management skills
