Reporting to the Manager, New Media, the Web Technical Lead will provide seasoned application development and IT operational expertise to both support and extend the MFA’s online initiatives. The Web Technical Lead is responsible for independently managing complex, technical, customer-facing Web and mobile projects to successful completion. Projects may include enhancing the online collections search, participating in mobile platform planning, developing new site features such as Web 2.0 functionality, optimizing server performance, integrating with other museum collections and data sources, and managing the flow of bug fixes and minor feature requests. Provide technical leadership on Museum projects (define, structure, plan, and coordinate work). Interface with Project Managers, Analysts, Business, Testers, Architects, and other platform support groups to deliver solutions and provide platform support. Set strategic direction for our Web platform using existing and emerging technologies. Manage technical project resources as well as having the technical expertise and experience to perform the development activities themselves, if needed. Work with great autonomy, exercising independent judgment on tactical decisions. This role serves as a mentor to many development team members and is a collaborative partner to other colleagues in New Media and Creative Services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Serve as Technical Lead on multiple, complex, Internet projects. Responsible for overall delivery and support of sites, features, and deliverables, including content management tools, technical enhancements, components, and data interfaces. Responsible for high-level technical design and development, and informing strategic direction of the Museum’s Web platform using existing and emerging technologies. Inform business strategy with reliable, robust Web traffic and user reports. Interface with vendors, programmers, project managers, analysts, vendors, content maintainers and other teams to deliver evolved, customer-facing solutions and provide platform support. Plan and deliver ongoing improvements needed to the Content Management System (CMS) to support the Museum’s diverse content creators and editors. Act as the liaison with the partner/vendor managing the CMS. Oversee development for the Museum’s Internet, Intranet, and Extranet sites. Ultimately responsible for health and welfare of MFA’s greater Web platform. Support MFA-wide business intelligence and knowledge management initiatives working with other teams to reinforce and preserve data standards. Ensure that technical specifications, work plans and code meet MFA standards and business needs. Ensure that a robust quality assurance process is in place for all development work. Support QA staff during testing and oversee production implementations. Create and maintain system documentation. Define and enforce build management processes, code libraries and other development procedures. Lead regular technical design and code reviews. Define and enforce platform standards, controls, and governance policies to mitigate platform risk.
QUALIFICATIONS: BS in Computer Science, MIS, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field and 5+ years prior experience with Internet architecture, design, and development for complex projects is required. Demonstrated experience designing, building, and implementing open-source Content Management platforms (such as Drupal), very strongly preferred. Experience managing vast, complex Web presence for a large organization or company. Must have experience with securely storing, transferring, and archiving confidential and behavioral user information. Ability to manage a varied project team. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain critical relationships with other departments, vendors, and partners. Experience with web programming languages, servers and technologies required, including ASP.NET, C#, VB.NET, SQL Server, XML/XSL, IIS, JavaScript, and HTML. Web Services/SOA, SharePoint and data modeling experience preferred. An understanding of J2EE technologies such as Servlets, JSP, JSTL, and JDBC is particularly desirable. Other valuable languages include PHP, Perl, Python, and ASP, per above. Ability to communicate technical information to project stakeholders and end users in both technical and non-technical terms. Solid literacy in Google Analytics strongly preferred. Excellent team collaboration, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills. Detail-oriented approach to problem-solving and project delivery. Must occasionally be able to work non-standard hours.
