Ethos is a nonprofit dedicated to helping the elderly and disabled remain at home for as long as possible while promoting dignity, independence, and well-being.

Many of the elders we serve are home-bound and get lonely. As a senior companion, you will be matched with an elder that you can visit in his or her home to provide companionship, relieve loneliness, and share interests. For some elders, this match-up program is one of their most important services and they look forward to seeing their companion every week.

Are you between 11 and 18 years of age? If so, you may be eligible to participate in a vitamin D study at the Division of Adolescent/Young Adult Medicine at Children’s Hospital Boston.

Vitamin D deficiency is a common problem among teenagers and can lead to a variety of negative health effects. Currently, it is unclear as to how much Vitamin D teenagers should have each day in order to be healthy. Many doctors think that adolescents should get the same daily dose that adults do, but there is no information to support this.

This research study aims to determine if the recommended daily dose of vitamin D for adults is effective for teenagers. Participants will be given vitamin D in capsule form, to be taken every day for 11 weeks.

For more information about this study, please contact Dr. Pitts at sarah.pitts@childrens.harvard.edu or 617-355-3732. Please include your name and a phone number at which we can reach you.

Volunteer Income Tax Preparers (Chelsea,MA )

What is VITA?

The VITA Program offers free income tax preparation to low- and moderate-income (generally, $40,000 and below) families. Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country. VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. Most locations offer free electronic filing.

Helping Chelsea Residents Prepare their Taxes

This year Chelsea Neighborhood Developers will be hosting 3 VITA sites. We will be running these sites at our office, 4 Gerrish Ave (2 blocks from Bellingham square), Spencer Green Community Room (113 Spencer Street), both in Chelsea, and the third in Revere, MA, between January 20th and April 15th 2010.

We will be open:
•	Mondays from 4:00pm – 8:00pm (CND office)
•	Tuesdays from 4:00pm-8:00pm (Spencer Green)
•	Wednesdays from 4:00pm-8:00pm (CND office)
•	Thursdays from 4:00pm – 8:00pm (Spencer Green)
•	Saturdays (1/23, 1/30, 2/6, 2/13, 2/20, 2/27, 3/20, 3/27, 4/3, and 4/10) from 9:00am – 2:00pm (CND office and certain dates in Revere)

Volunteers will work with individuals to help them file their taxes utilizing the TaxWise computer software from the Internal Revenue Service.

How Can I Participate?

Prior to the start of the filing season, volunteers will be required to attend a Tax Law, site orientation and software training on January 13th or January 14th (6:00-8:00pm) and must complete online test by or on January 16th. If these dates don’t work for you e-mail Carol at crijo@chelseand.org for alternative dates.

Volunteers must pass an online test (Basic Level) prior to providing volunteer support. Materials and other information needed for test will be given upon volunteer commitment and are also available online.

Let us know if you are interested in volunteering by contacting Carol at crijo@chelseaND.org or 617-889-1375 ext 16 and she will provide you information on next steps.

Thank you so much for your interest.
This year the hurricane Jimena has lashed the city of Guaymas leaving an important level of rain. 2009 is the year when it rained the most (in the last 50 years) and this caused an important damage to the population of Guaymas and to the city. The hurricane affected people of all backgrounds, leaving a lot of people in the middle of nowhere since they lost everything they had. Everything was affected, public buildings, leisure areas, houses, schools, there was no place that was not affected.
This international volunteer project is organized in order to help in the reconstruction of the city of Guaymas with the support of motivated volunteers. There are many things to be done since there were several areas seriously affected. We need help to clean beaches, to rebuild sportive spaces, to clean up parks and community spaces, to fix roads, to help in rural communities by giving health workshops.
After the hurricane, the children affected don’t have a place to continue their studies, they lost everything they had for their education: material, furniture, the roof collapsed and the walls were damaged because of the water and humidity. For that reason, at this first stage, the goal of the project is renovating and reconstructing two schools damaged by the Jimena Hurricane, so the children affected can return to their educative activities as soon as possible and in a clean and healthy environment, appropriate for their development and with the support of the international volunteers. This project will benefit 25 families for the first school and 180 families for the second school.
Volunteers will help with the reconstruction of the two schools affected. They will help with reconstruction activities such as painting walls, reforestation, and cleaning the schools. They will contribute to renovate these structures through scratching and painting walls, and will also do some artistic work such as painting murals on the walls of the schools with the help of local volunteers with landscapes and thematic appropriate for the children. The volunteers will also help planting trees and reforesting the affected area, making and putting signals and signs.
Age range: 18 and over

For more details visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-mexico.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400 (US); 604-628-7400 (Canada)

For volunteer opportunities in other countries click here: www.cadip.org

Are you currently taking an antidepressant, such as Zoloft, Celexa, Lexapro or Prozac, and still feel depressed? Would you like to try brief psychodynamic psychotherapy to treat your depression?

We Need:

Depressed men and women age 18 - 60, currently on SSRI or SNRI treatment, for a research study examining the usefulness of two neuroimaging tests in predicting whether someone with depression will get better when they are treated with a type of talk therapy called psychodynamic psychotherapy. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a type of treatment that explores better ways of coping with depression and other life problems.

Eligible participants will receive 16, 50-minute psychotherapy sessions, which will be billed to you or to your health insurance company in the usual way.

Additionally, at five times throughout the study, you will come to the Depression Clinical and Research Program to do a series of tasks. We will also ask you to come in for a follow-up visit three months after the end of your psychotherapy sessions. Each of these visits will last about 1.5 hours. The total amount you will receive for completing these visits is $155.

15 eligible participants will have the option of having two positron emission tomography (PET) scans, for which compensation will be provided based on the time commitment ($75 per scan).
The children, whose fathers or grandfathers were exposed (causing chromosomal damage) or who were contaminated from their mother’s milk, suffer from a range of difficult conditions. While staying in Vietnam Friendship Village, children and veterans are nourished and are provided with free medical care. The children, who may stay there for several years, receive not only basic education, but also some forms of job training.
The Organic Gardening Project was launched in 2004 with the goal of creating islands of a harmonious approach to agriculture within areas of environmental and human devastation - increasing awareness of the consequences of war and, at the same time, demonstrating positive strategies for healing and living. At this moment, the farm is providing about 60% of the village’s consumption of vegetable. It is expected that it will cover all the need and there are products left for sale to raise funds for the village.
Volunteers will help with clearing the site, preparing soil, weeding, planting vegetables and fruit trees, cleaning a fish pond and redecorating the flowers in the garden.

Ayurveda is a 5000 years old Indian health care system that is widely practiced even today. "Ayur" in Sanskrit means "life" and "Veda" means "science". It is a perfect Science of health and longevity. This holistic science is the knowledge of complete balance of the body, mind and spirit, including the emotions and psychology, on all levels. It includes in its consideration, longevity, rejuvenation and self-realization therapies through herbs, diet, exercise, yoga, massage, aromas, tantras, mantras, and meditation. According to Ayurvedic tradition, health is the balance of elements air, earth, fire, and water, and illness is an excess or deficiency of any particular element. Ayurveda treats illness at its source, rather than at the level of symptoms, and helps an individual to take responsibility for their own health and well being. Ayurveda is also known as 'Ashtanga Veda' (the word literally means 'Eight branches of knowledge') as it is divided into eight specialized branches.
Yoga is a complete science of life that originated in India several thousands of years ago. It is the oldest system of personal development in the world, encompassing the entire body, mind and spirit. It is the union between a person's own consciousness and the universal consciousness. The classical techniques of Yoga date back more than 5,000 years. The word Yoga means "to join or yoke together," and it brings the body and mind together into one harmonious experience.
The volunteers will be learning the Basics of Yoga and Ayurveda in these three weeks of the project. Every day, there will be topics covered by a professional master (the person in charge of yoga and ayurveda classes), which will be practiced by the volunteers. Yoga will be practiced every day.
Apart from this, the volunteers will also help at the herbal garden and the nearby school. Furthermore, the volunteers will support a local school in need of simple renovation work. The volunteers will also interact with the children teaching them basic English and Mathematics, Health and Hygiene awareness, environmental protection, etc.

For more details visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-india.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400 (US); 604-628-7400 (Canada)

This project is part of CADIP's International Volunteer Program: www.cadip.org/workcamps.htm

Lunar New Year festival for orphans in Saigon
February 1 - February 11, 2010

TET Festival is Vietnamese traditional New Year Holiday (following Lunar Calendar) which usually falls into mid January – mid February. This is the time for family reunion and visits to friends and relatives. Like the Christmas and New Year in western countries, people here prepare a lot for this holiday, from renovating their houses, making cakes and a lot of food and drinks. However, in the orphanages, children do not have enough to prepare for their holiday. Most of them stay in the orphanage or centers over the Tet, only some of them go back to their home villages. Thus, there is need to prepare something for those children, so they still have good time and enjoy such big holidays.
In Ho Chi Minh City area, an international workcamp will be set up to prepare Tet holidays in Ky Quang Orphanage and Chua La Orphanage.
Volunteers will help renovating the houses, cleaning the site and making Chung Cake (traditional cake for children in Tet).

The children here have unfortunate backgrounds as many have been abandoned by their parents and relatives. The head monk sometimes receives phone calls from hospitals requesting him to take in abandoned babies. A shelter for children and old aged people was opened in a village 10 km from the city, providing support to the poorer sections of the population in the district. The volunteers will be involved in various activities ranging from manual work at the center, creative and entertainment activities in schools and kindergartens and spreading awareness on issues related to education, environment protection, health and hygiene. The idea is to tackle the burning issues that the rural population is facing.

For more details, please visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-india.htm

Volunteer opportunities in other countries: www.cadip.org/workcamps.htm, t: 617-502-0400 (US), 604-628-7400 (Canada)

Long-term Follow-Up Family Study of Children at Risk for

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Do you or one of your family members suffer from unwanted thoughts, worries and behaviors that they can't stop? Or, is there someone in your family who has been diagnosed with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?

Is there a child under 9 years old in your family who does not have OCD?

If you answered yes to these questions, we would like to ask you to become a part of a family research study at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). The purpose of this study is to find the causes of OCD. Families who take part in this study will receive a psychological evaluation at no cost. Families will be given feedback about some of the tests given to the children. We will also want to collect a DNA sample and take a picture (MRI) of your brain.

This study will require 6 hours of your time per year.
The Western Ghats is India's prime zone for bio-diversity, known for its number of animal and plant species in this region. A Marine Turtle protection project has been started here in co-operation with the Forest Department of the State of Karnataka. Over a 60-kilometer stretch of beach, surveys are conducted and the turtle nests are protected until the hatching of the eggs. In 2007, more than 1500 baby turtles reached the ocean safely thanks to the efforts of international volunteers. This year again we continue these efforts. The projects will also focus on spreading awareness to the general public and in the schools about the importance of turtles in the bio-diversity.

Think of the qualities of a great city - fun, space, clean air, nature, culture - and Reykjavik has them in spades. It has the features of a modern, forward-looking society which are complemented by a close connection to beautiful nature.
The population of the Reykjavik Capital Area is about 200,000. Reykjavik is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean on almost all sides. In the summer, you can sit by the harbour at midnight and watch the sun dip slightly below the horizon before it makes its way up again.
The world’s northernmost capital is framed by the majestic Mt. On a sunny day, the mystical Snaefellsjokull glacier appears crystal-like on the western horizon, while mountainous moonscapes spread to the southeast.
The volunteers will be hosted by the City of Reykjavik and their task is to help the local authorities to make the city center a better place to stay. Also, an ability to palletize and stack tested items for shipping according to directions is not required, but definitely a plus. Ability to sort cords and mice.

2. Access to public or private transportation. If you are relying on public transportation, you can arrange to be picked up at the Braintree station on red line or the Quincy or Hingham commuter boat stations, schedules available at www.harborexpress.com and www.bostonharborcruises.com.

WHAT:	Donate Your Computer Equipment, used radio and TV transmitting equipment For Reuse In Schools in Developing Countries

Expand minds, not landfills! Donate your working computer equipment (Pentium III and IV only) for reuse by young people in schools, libraries, and community centers in developing countries. Volunteers from the Boston Office of World Computer Exchange (WCE, www.WorldComputerExchange.org) will be accepting, testing and packing donated used, working Pentium 3 and 4 computers.. Equipments are accepted for drop off any time at WCE’s Hull location, or via mail. Businesses, institutional donors, or individuals wishing to make special arrangements should contact us for more details.

With 700 volunteers, WCE is the largest US non-profit provider of reused computers to connect youth in developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Studies show that the reuse of a computer is 25 times more carbon efficient than destroying one and re-manufacturing a new one. Our volunteer chapters in cities across the US and Canada have helped us prepare and ship over 26,000 donated computer sets since our first shipment in 2000.

At the same time, our work also helps to implement the UN’s Millennium Development Goals in Education, bridging the disturbing global divides in information, technology understanding, and opportunity.

Have you been feeling down or depressed lately? If so, do you have unusual experiences where it seems that people are out to give you a hard time or to hurt you; do you hear, see, feel, smell, or taste things that other people do not experience?

If you have these symptoms, you may be suffering from a specific type of Major Depressive Disorder and may be eligible to participate in a treatment study at Massachusetts General Hospital. The purpose of this research study is to examine the effectiveness and safety of Seroquel when it is taken alone, compared to when it is taken in addition to an antidepressant, in the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder with Psychotic Features. You may be eligible if you are between the ages of 18-85 years.

The study involves 9 weekly visits to the DCRP. All subjects in this study will receive active treatment, and will be assigned by chance, like the flip of a coin, to take either Seroquel alone, or the combination of Seroquel and an antidepressant (Sertraline, Citalopram or Escitalopram).
