HOW YOU COULD HAVE TURNED $24K INTO $374K... (Cambridge)

Out in California they would say "You should have been here yesterday. Surf was up!" Well I'll be the first to admit timing is everything.

But here's an example of timing that's more like one the financial gurus can understand in Harvard Square.

If you had purchased an uncirculated (slabbed) America Silver Eagle One Dollar coin, each month for the past 20 years (let's say at $100 each -- and that's really too high), you would have invested a total of $24,000. If a person with just such a collection sold it today, according to numismatic experts those coins have a value of approximately $374,000. How does that compare to you 401k retirement plan?

There is always a disclaimer to any financial scenario (past performance is no indicator of future performance), but I think pretty much anyone can understand collecting gold and silver coins puts the "precious metal" approach to life within the reach of almost everyone. I'm not talking about saving your change from grocery shopping and hoping a shiny coin will some day be worth something. But saving up $100 of those dimes, quarters and extra dollars would add up. If you had started collecting silver dollars just five years ago, would you be better off today?

I'd like to enroll you in a savings program where you do purchase an American Silver Eagle MS 70 coin every month. Open that package in front of a grandchild or your own family and see the excitement in people's eyes. It's just like the old days of taking a child to the bank with a passbook in their hand, so you could deposit a dollar together. What's even better is that at the same time I can also offer you two other outstanding benefits.

Join our program of saving and for $99 you'll get a coin that currently sells on national public auction sites (like "E") for about $125. So that means you are already ahead of the game as you receive each coin. The other benefit is that I can put you into the business of selling both GOLD and SILVER coins on the Net and working with others as a group to create income.

I invite each of you to visit my web site today. Christmas is almost here and the bills won't be far behind. Focus on making 2010 a much better year for you and your family.

Court fees have increased

It now costs $25 to appeal a traffic ticket in front of a court clerk.
We used to have a right to an appeal for free.

The cost to appeal to a judge now costs $50.
That's up from $20. And that used to be free just a few years ago.

These increases are outrageous. And they don't end there.
For years now we've been punished for the same "crime" several times over.
If we lose an traffic appeal, not only are we burdened with increasing fines that often approach $200 or more,
but we pay insurance surcharges on that same ticket that could approach another $200/year for five or more years.
Very often these tickets are not given to improve safety but to raise revenue for the state.

When will this type of extortion and punishment stop?
When citizens band together to stop it.

Please join a protest to reverse unfair fees and hidden taxes.
Help devise creative ways to reverse the trend.
Meanwhile join a more conventional protest by calling the governor and legistors and by signing petitions.

The Politics of John Lennon

Although all of the Beatles were greatly talented individuals, the most iconic member was almost certainly John Lennon. Lennon’s work with the Beatles and his solo material (right up until Double Fantasy, which was released barely a month before his murder in 1980) displays a verbal wit, musical verve and experimentation but most centrally at its best, an empathy and an ability to absorb and be effected by events, both personal, close to home, and internationally.

It was this tendency for Lennon to be touched by world events, combined with his instinctive sympathy for the ‘underdog’, that led him towards political questions and saw him, for a period at least, describing himself as a socialist. This is an aspect of the Beatles which was not touched upon in any of the mainstream media coverage of their 40th anniversary. The central contradiction was that, at one and the same time, the Beatles were a ‘corporate’ band, whose faces adorned countless merchandise and who were aggressively marketed; while all the time personal experiences and world events pushed all the Beatles, but Lennon in particular, further away from the mainstream.

Born in 1940, Lennon was brought up by his aunt Mimi in comfortable surroundings. Though by no means rich, Lennon was certainly the ‘poshest’ of the Beatles. He was a show-off and an attention-seeker as both a child and a teen; this can be explained to some extent by Lennon’s abandonment issues with his parents.

In a certain sense, the meteoric rise in popularity of the Beatles fed into his ego, but at the same time Lennon felt increasingly constrained by his fame. The huge controversy in the US in particular surrounding his claim that the Beatles were ‘bigger than Jesus’ is a good example of this. The corporate image that Beatles manager Brian Epstein was keen to foster meant that huge pressure was put on Lennon to avoid areas of controversy, and the backlash against these comments seemed to reinforce that.

But at the same time, the movement against the Vietnam war was developing and Lennon, increasingly influenced by the ‘Hippy scene’ and pacifist ideals, felt that he should use the position he had. Ray Coleman details this in his biography, Lennon: "Lennon wanted to condemn publicly American aggression in Vietnam at the height of the Beatles fame. Epstein warned him against it, and John, who for a time did not want the roller-coaster of Beatlemania to wane, went along with the ‘party line’. It was a bitter pill to swallow".

But Lennon could only constrain himself for a period and, as he explained in a later interview with the left newspaper Red Mole: "There came a time when George and I said ‘Listen, when they ask next time, we’re going to say we don’t like the war and we think they should get right out’. That’s what we did. At the time this was a pretty radical thing to do, especially for the ‘Fab Four’. It was the first opportunity I personally took to wave the flag a bit".

Although Lennon continued to hold anti-war and pacifist beliefs, the effect of the drug-fuelled ‘psychedelic’ scene that he became part of pushed him towards individualist, idealist and even religious answers to the questions he was asking. These were both political in nature, about the suffering of the masses in the neo-colonial world in particular, but also personal for him, about the ephemeral nature of his extreme fame.

The Beatles famously went to a spiritual retreat in India organised by the Maharishi Yogi in 1968. During this time, they wrote many of the songs that went on to become the White Album. Lennon’s experience there led him to become disillusioned with many of the spiritual ideas that he had been pursuing. This was summed up by the song Sexy Sadie, which was a sarcastic dismissal of the Maharishi. The retreat also coincided with the historic events of May 1968 in France, where the greatest general strike in history was unfolding. An avid reader of newspapers, Lennon followed these events from afar and was pushed to ask pertinent questions about how society could be changed and what sort of society we could have instead.

His ambiguous response to these questions was the song Revolution, of which two different versions were released. Lennon’s pacifist ideals meant that he feared calls for revolution could fuel violent oppression from the state and the first version of the song released states "you can count me out". However, in the version included on the White Album, the lyrics alternately state that you can "count me out, in". This was a big step for Lennon, moving from a desire to change the world that centred on idealism and individual change – ‘revolution in the mind’ – to looking towards mass movements and collective struggle.

From here, Lennon and his partner Yoko Ono became more involved with protest, conscious of how his position and profile could be used to inspire struggle. The ‘Bed-in’ protest, for example, although quirky and slightly naive, was genuinely motivated.

The break-up of the Beatles in 1969 coincided with an increasing disillusionment with hippy ideals and a desire for real change. Lennon summed this up himself: "Of course, there are a lot of people walking around with long hair now and some trendy middle-class kids in pretty clothes. But nothing changed except that we dressed up a bit, leaving the same bastards running everything".

The period of 1970-1973 was probably Lennon’s most overtly political in his music. Lyrically and rhythmically, he was influenced by the chants and slogans heard on demonstrations. He composed certain songs with the explicit aim of having them taken up by workers and young people in struggle. Power To The People is a prime example of this: "Say we want a revolution/We better get on right away/We're going to bring you down/when we come into town/Singing power to the people".

It could be argued that others have more effectively summed up working-class life in their music and have expressed the need for change more subtly, but Lennon’s aspiration to help push forward mass movements and the sloganeering of some of his music in this period came from a commitment to the idea of struggle and personal questioning about how he could add to this, which should be respected.

He also expressed this support financially, as Roy Coleman explains: "The civil disturbances in Northern Ireland were erupting into civil war. The Nixon administration had taken the gloves off when they murdered four students from Kent State University during a demonstration in 1970. The Lennons became more and more active in radical politics. They donated money to Michael X’s Black House, recorded a single, ‘Do the Oz’, for the defendants of the infamous ‘Schoolkids Oz’ trial".

The alternative society that he aspired to, which at the time he would have seen as socialism, was summed up in the song Imagine. The continuing popularity of this track attests to the appeal that these ideas have amongst ordinary people.

Following Lennon’s move to the US, he continued his involvement in politics, singing at benefit concerts organised by the American trade union movement, recording songs about, and to raise funds for, the Irish civil rights movement and continuing his involvement in anti-war politics.

Lennon planned a 33-date tour of the US in the run up to the 1972 election as part of a drive to get Nixon kicked out of the White House. However, fearful of the effect that this could have, the Nixon administration tapped Lennon’s phone, put him under FBI surveillance and initiated deportation procedures.

Tied up in the fight against deportation, plans for the tour were dropped and Lennon became disillusioned after Nixon’s re-election. Through a combination of burn-out from his deportation struggle and a move away from the organised working class in the radical US movement, Lennon became less actively involved in politics.

But the ideals that Lennon had looked towards in this period stayed with him until his death. The central question that faced him was how to reconcile his position in society and his own fame with the idea of mass struggle. Nearly thirty years since his death and forty years since the break-up of the band that brought about his fame, we can still enjoy a body of musical work without parallel, be inspired by the same struggles that inspired him, and help build a movement that can effectively bring about the change in society that he looked towards.

STOP Svedka FEMBOTS in Boston (Boston)

About Women & Media Project - Women¡¦s Educational Center
46 Pleasant Street ƒnCambridge MA 02139
Tel: 617-492-5630

To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing to voice my extreme disappointment with the recent appearance of a certain ad campaign from the vodka company Svedka on Boston area bus shelters. The ads which I refer to feature an icon which Svedka has deemed its ¡§Fembot.¡¨ The Fembot is a composite of images of a machine and a naked woman. This isn¡¦t the first time the MBTA has allowed Svedka to subject the public to this pernicious image. Svedka ran a series of Fembot ads on bus shelters in the spring of 2008. It was my understanding that the MBTA received quite a few phone calls and letters (including two from the About Women & Media Project) objecting to the presence of these Fembot ads in Boston communities. I had hoped that whoever is responsible for reviewing ads for offensive content at the MBTA had come to see the problem with this particular ad campaign. Unfortunately, that doesn¡¦t seem to be the case now.
If the offensiveness of these ads isn¡¦t obvious, then consider this: editorial cartoons frequently employ the tactic of merging images; politicians are drawn to look like dogs, pigs, babies etc. Whatever the combination of images, the purpose is always the same, to suggest that this is the true nature of the person depicted. The true nature of machines is that they¡¦re soulless, mindless objects that are made to be used. Given this, how could the illustrated equation of women with machines not be a profound offense? Moreover, how can it not be a threat given that the true nature of violence against women is that it follows invariably from the idea that women are objects?
Along with the offense and its insidious effects there is the issue of the ads¡¦ immediate impact on our social environment. Ask yourself what would it be if an individual showed an image like that of Svedka¡¦s Fembot to a child at bus stop? Lewd public behavior? Corruption of a minor? How is it any different when a liquor company does it? More importantly, how do you expect to be able to discourage individual perpetrators of inappropriate behavior like sexual assault of women on public transportation, while you¡¦re indulging corporate perpetrators of inappropriate behavior?
The goal of advertising is to influence peoples¡¦ opinions. If advertising didn¡¦t work then companies wouldn¡¦t spend money on it. Svedka¡¦s Fembot ads make the malevolent suggestion that women are (or will be) objects. Whether or not Svedka meant to say that is a moot point. The ads are up, literally larger than life and exerting an influence - because that is what ads do. We hope that the social hazards and ethical odiousness of these ads are apparent now and that in respect for the humanity of all people, you will cease to run them immediately.

Most sincerely,
Amelia Sabadini, & Betsy Warrior

Bankers Support Charter Schools - Deregulation at Public Expense (Unionize the Charter Schools!)

Daniel Wolff ziwolff@optonline.net

It only makes sense that the article appeared in the Style section of the New York Times. Sure, it’s about hedge fund managers supporting New York City’s charter schools. But if we are to believe the breezy slant of the piece (Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, “Scholarly Investments”), these young turks pick out charters the way their fathers shopped for the latest fedora. Cause it’s fashionable. Cause it reflects their inner selves. Cause it makes them feel good.

The author, Nancy Hass, admits that thirty-something multimillionaires embracing public education “may seem odd.” Their kids, after all, are far more likely to go to Greenwich Country Day. But the explanation is simple enough if you know what she calls “the sociology of Wall Street.” These guys from Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have a certain level of “nerdiness,” and charter schools appeal to their “maverick instincts.”

According to this benign scenario, the same analysts who spend all day in cut-throat financial competition toss away their Blackberries come dusk and do the right thing by joining the boards of charter schools. Privately run and often non-union, charters are seen by their advocates as the free market alternative to traditional public schools. Or, as the article puts it, “an entrepreneurial answer to the nation’s education woes.”

Typically, we’re told, a charter board consists of a dozen or so members who are asked to donate or raise $1.3 million over three years. Let’s see … that’s around $36,000 a board member per year. Certainly sizable but not gigantic given their annual “eight-figure incomes.” Especially since donations to organizations like Democrats for Education Reform are tax deductible.

Whitney Tilson, on the board of a company that manages charter schools, says they “present the kind of opportunity that ‘electrifies’ hedge fund managers.” Tilson calls it “the most important cause in the nation, obviously.” He adds, “With the state providing so much of the money, outside contributions are insanely well leveraged.”

Ah! Now we’re getting somewhere. New York State provides 75 to 90 percent of the per-student cost at a charter school. That’s because schools like the Harlem Success Academies are still technically public and draw from public funds. So if the young analysts look at their donations as an investment – which the article insists they do not … or not that kind of investment – then their dollars are heavily backed by tax dollars. That is to say, by our dollars.

Ravenal Boykin Curry IV of Eagle Capital Management has co-founded two girls prep schools and is head of the board of a third. He explains that he’s been “knee deep in educational issues” since his 20’s. Almost in passing he adds that these schools are: “exactly the kind of investment people in our industry spend our days trying to stumble on, with incredible cash flow, even if in this case we don’t ourselves get any of it.”

So maybe the Blackberries and the financial acumen don’t disappear at night? Perhaps charter schools appeal to the investors’ “maverick instincts” because they look a lot like the instruments these guys fight over (or in Mr. Curry’s more benevolent term “stumble on”) during the day? That has certainly proven the case across the country, where start-up management firms see charters as prime, for-profit ventures. Through various real estate deals and cost-cutting practices (like paying teachers less), these private/public schools have already shown themselves to be potential money makers. One real estate trust recently sunk $170 million into 22 charters. Said its CEO: “The charter public schools offer lenders/leaseholders a dependable revenue stream backed by a government payer. It’s a very desirable equation.”

The young turks may not profit directly from their board work. But as the Style article makes clear, New York City’s charter school network is the new country club. It’s where the elite meet, where potential business connections are made. And even if these Masters of the Universe don’t “get any” from the schools they back, they’re in on the ground floor of a growth industry. Their experience in New York City may well influence their financial recommendations and investments elsewhere.

“The underlying drive,” as John Petry, partner at Gotham Capital and member of the Success Charter Network, puts it, “is to build something that can spread, can be recreated in different cities; otherwise it’s not as meaningful to us.” Only 2.5% of the city’s public school students are in charters, the article states, but that’s more like 20% in Harlem and parts of Brooklyn. And the movement gets that much more “meaningful” in New Orleans, for example, where over half the kids are in newly formed charters. A national string of hedge-fund-backed, privately run schools begins to look like a real option: a chain competing with and siphoning funding from standard public schools. As Robert Reffkin, a vice president at Goldman Sachs, puts it his peers now “understand what’s at stake and what the return can be.”

Except the educational return is still unclear. There’s no conclusive evidence that charters do a better job than traditional public schools. Meanwhile, the investments these young tycoons have made are already changing public education – and changing it to more closely resemble the financial models they work with during the day. Those models, as we’ve learned over the last couple years, don’t always pan out.

If they don’t? If the charter bubble bursts? Where does that leave the kids who’ve switched over from the less sexy, less well-funded, regular system? Charter schools, the article states, are today’s “hot cause.” But what happens tomorrow, when styles change

Jazz/PopSinger, Harvard Grad Heads Scholarship for Blind Performers

The daughter of a professional military musician, Lisa Ostrow (Franklin, MA) was immersed in the guidance, encouragement and emphasis on precision associated with military bands. It was an ideal environment for this gifted vocalist and pianist. But, life has not been easy for Lisa. Born with Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis a rare genetic condition, she has been blind all of her life. In addition, two of her daughters struggle with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD).

Whether it was hiking the rugged, 60-mile West Coast Trail or going on an African safari, blindness would not hold her back. A Harvard grad and recording artist, Lisa recently accepted a volunteer post as coordinator of the Mary Ann Parks Performing Arts Scholarship fund, a project of the nonprofit Performing Arts Division of the National Federation of the Blind (PAD, NFB, www.padnfb.org) which supports blind students majoring in the performing arts.

Ostrow’s association with PAD began in 2007 when she was asked by President Dennis Holston (Manhattan talent recruiter and computer teacher) to contribute a track to the "Sound in Sight" project. The "Sound in Sight" CD is an interracial, multi-genre compilation of original music and covers by the nation’s most promising blind recording artists. Lisa donated her version of "Once Upon a Time" from the musical "Brooklyn." Hear clips at www.cdbaby.com/cd/padotnfotb.

Music was destined to play a significant role in Lisa’s life journey. Her father spent 35 years in the Canadian Armed Forces Music Branch, first as a clarinetist and eventually retired as a major at the peak of his musical career. Born in Colorado Springs while her father was stationed with the NORAD band, Lisa holds dual citizenship in the US and Canada. At age ten she began intensive training with the Royal Conservatory of Music, advancing through their rigorous program at an accelerated pace, performing in a wide variety of venues and television broadcasts, and winning awards and recognition throughout the Maritime Provinces and Western Canada.

Lisa and husband Peter have three daughters, Laura, Jennie and Alina. The whole family sings back-up on "Once Upon a Time." Laura & Jennie, the Ostrowe’s fourteen-year-old identical twins, are afflicted with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), a life threatening genetic condition affecting 600,000 Americans and 12.5 million children and adults, worldwide -- more people than Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, and sickle cell anemia combined). There is no treatment or cure.

Lisa earned a cum laude degree in Slavic Languages and Literatures from Harvard. Honored for her excellence as a pianist and vocalist in the U.S. and Canada, Lisa is donating the proceeds from her first CD, "Unconditional" to the PKD Foundation. Peter, the twins and Alina participated in the Boston Walk for PKD in September, where Lisa performed live for the cause.

Lisa’s album has appeared on the iTunes Top 100 Downloads chart for Easy Listening. One of the songs, "Maybe I Like It This Way," appeared at #20 on the iTunes Easy Listening chart. The album itself has climbed to #8 on CDBaby's Top-Selling Easy Pop and Vocal Pop charts.

E mail Lisa under Cabinet Posts/Scholarship Coordinator at www.padnfb.org/contact.html.

*About the National Federation of the Blind: With more than 50,000 members, the National Federation of the Blind is the largest and most influential membership organization of blind people in the United States. The NFB improves blind people’s lives through advocacy, education, research, technology, and programs encouraging independence and self-confidence. It is the leading force in the blindness field today and the voice of the nation's blind. In January 2004 the NFB opened the National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute, the first research and training center in the United States for the blind led by the blind.
