Responsibilities
GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT
The incumbent will provide technical support for Principal Investigator in stem cell research in accordance with established Institutional policies and procedures, and conduct a variety of routine molecular and cell biology tests with good records keeping. General supervision is expected.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs tissue and cell culture manipulations and laboratory tests following established procedures. The tests may include basic molecular biology techniques, molecular cloning of DNA constructs, gel electrophoresis, and PCR-based genotyping.
Cell culture may include mouse embryonic stem (mES) cell culture preparation and manipulation such as:
- Cell Culture medium preparation and exchange
- Derivation of new mES cells
- Derivation of new MEF cells, their propagation and distribution
- Expansion of mES cells on MEF feeder layers
- Differentiation of mES cells
- Preparation of DNA and RNA from mES cells for experimental analysis
- Cells cryopreservation and thawing

Other responsibilities include:
- Maintain basic records of methodologies and test results in a log of work performed
- Identify unusual findings and reports such findings to supervisor
- Maintain equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly manner
- Maintain established department policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control
- Maintain established hospital policies, procedures, and objectives for laboratory safety

Performs other duties and responsibilities as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor of Science degree in biological/medical science, or equivalent; May consider a bachelor¿s degrees in another area of concentration, if individual has had basic coursework in the sciences and demonstrates strong potential.
2. Experience with cell culture protocols is required; experience with embryonic stem cell culture is beneficial.
3. Familiarity with basic laboratory instruments, equipment and scientific procedures is expected.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
1. Must have a sound understanding of laboratory policies and procedures - usually acquired through one-three months on-the-job training.

2. Must have good manual dexterity.

3. Must demonstrate careful attention to detail.

4. Must be able to maintain a neat and orderly working environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Normal research/molecular biology laboratory with exposure to radioactive and other biohazardous materials under controlled conditions.
