The Hive is a virtual organization. We log in from our homes, a nearby office, one of our
global office locations, or wherever we have an internet connection. The nature of this
position, however, requires an on-site presence at our facility in Somerville, MA.

Who We Are:
The Hive is an organization of developers and engineers who are excited about the
ever-changing world of software and technology. Our passion is building the next
generation of consumer and business applications. We don't utilize the "factory"
approach to software development, believing that coding is a creative process akin to an
artistic endeavor. We also believe strongly in the benefits and sustainability of open
source software and the philosophy behind it.

The Opportunity:
We are seeking a senior level network administrator skilled in the setup and maintenance of
large-scale GNU/Linux and BSD Unix based environments.

Joining Us:
-Must have experience running a network of at least 50 servers
-Intimate familiarity with the GNU/Linux platform, particularly Debian
-Strong experience with scripting languages like Perl, bash, csh
-Ability to handle periodic on-call duty
-Distributed System Administration experience (dsh, etc)
-Experience with Nagios / Cacti / SNMP monitoring
-Experience with network security and intrusion detection systems
-Strong networking experience with OpenBSD (packet filter, routing, QoS)
-Thorough understanding of fundamental networking principles, including protocols
such as TCP, UDP, IPv4/6

Always a Plus:
-High-availability and scalable network service deployment
-Basic PHP skills
-LDAP / PAM / RADIUS experience
-Experience building and maintaining Debian packages
postfix and procmail experience
-Enterprise switch experience
-Experience using / configuring BGP
-VPN / Checkpoint experience
-Load Balancing using LVS and/or F5 Networks’ BIG-IP
-Automated backup system experience (Amanda, rsync, etc)
-Development experience creating tools to help automate management and
monitoring tasks for large numbers of servers

Consideration:
If you do not meet these requirements and feel you've accomplished something
outstanding and have a passion for technology, feel free to contact us anyway by
sending your resume here. We are always looking for talent, even if they don't
exactly fit our published needs.

Work Environment:
-Structured 8 hour day lets you have a life outside of work
-High-end Mac desktops and laptops with dual 30" cinema displays
-Executive desk with your choice of ergonomic chair
-Full benefits
-Work with some of the brightest and best minds in the industry

Philosophy:

Bandwidth and software have finally reached the point where online collaboration online
is as rich, or more-so, than in person. As such, we've begun building out the foundation
for a new breed of distributed workplace, The Hive.
Traditional workplaces try to build magic palaces, forcing everyone into one location and lifestyle.
That practice is about to come to an end, and open source is leading this change. It doesn't
matter how intoxicating the palace is, every coder is part artist, eccentric and ideated.
Big boxes and rules about where you can live are the antipathy of a coder's passions.
The Hive is our collective vision of the next generation office environment. We are
building the tools to empower a rich collaborative team software development
experience: always available video conferencing, VOIP, IM, presence, and virtual white
boarding, all connected through smart self-managing project tools.
We live anywhere, dream anything, and code everything.
