The US has transferred 12 detainees from its Guantanamo Bay prison camp to Afghanistan, Yemen and the Somaliland region, the Justice Department says. Six Yemenis, four Afghans and two Somali detainees were sent to their homelands over the weekend, it said.
Obama acknowledged in November that he would miss his January deadline to close down the camp.
The US plans to send 116 detainees to their home countries or to third countries willing to accept them. Third countries willing to accept them? Might this be a bit open ended?

Exhibit A is Lebanon. The freedom agenda of President Bush's first administration helped produce the Cedar Revolution. After Syria sponsored the assassination of Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, the Syrians, under pressure from a newly assertive U.S. government, withdrew from Lebanon after a 30-year occupation. There was hope that an international tribunal would arraign Syrian dictator Bashar Assad for the murder of Harriri, and that Lebanon would become a genuine Arab democracy.
But now, as Jonathan Tobin explains, these hopes have been dashed. Indeed, the situation in Lebanon is so bad that Hariri's son, Saad, has just journeyed to Damascus to pay tribute to his father's murderer. Syrian troops have not returned to Lebanon, but they don't need to -- Hezbollah, a proxy for both Iran and Syria, supplies the muscle. Meanwhile, Syria's influence is again unchallenged in Beirut, as Hariri's visit demonstrates.
What happened? For one thing, Israel failed to defeat Hezbollah during the 2006 war. But according to the New York Times, no less, the main factor in Lebanese's national humiliation and downfall is Obama's decision to "engage" Syria and its butcher of a leader:
[T]he United States and the West have chosen to engage with Syria, not isolate it. And Saudi Arabia, which has long backed Mr. Hariri and competed with Syria for influence here, reconciled with the Syrians earlier this year, leaving them a freer hand to guide politics in Lebanon as they once did.
Or, as Tobin puts it, "those who thought they had the West's backing for resisting the thugs of Damascus have been forced to swallow their pride and swear loyalty to Assad in order to save their lives." Thus, Lebanon stands humiliated, its hopes for freedom and independence dashed probably for at least another generation.

The final straw for Angela Mejia snapped at 2:30 a.m. Saturday when, “I woke up in the middle of the night and saw the light on in his bedroom,” hours after she had told him to go to sleep.
“Sometimes I want to run away, too,” Mejia said, breaking down in tears in her immaculate apartment. “I have support from my church, but I’m alone. I want to help my son, but I can’t find a way.”
Mejia is among thousands of parents struggling with today’s video-game obsessed youth. The Entertainment Software Association reports the popularity of video games is skyrocketing, with 42 percent of adults intending to give, or hoping to find one in their Christmas stocking this week.
Mejia’s son - one of four children the 49-year-old is raising alone - was playing “Grand Theft Auto,” an exceedingly violent video in which the gamer assumes the role of ladder-climbing criminal.
An argument ensued as Mejia unplugged her son’s PlayStation. Then, this mad-as-hell mother dialed 911. Police responded and managed to talk the boy into shutting off the game and going to sleep.
“They (police) were just like, ‘Chill out. Go to bed,’ ” the boy told the Herald.
Mejia said she approves of athletic-themed videos, but as for “Grand Theft Auto,” she said, “I would never buy that kind of video. No way. I called (police) because if you don’t respect your mother, what are you going to do in your life?”
Mejia, a cafeteria cashier at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Jamaica Plain, said the two officers who responded “were surprised” there was more involved than putting the lid on a simmering family feud.

Darling, you have it wrong. I mock the people outside of Boston (Quincy, Allston, Brighton, Revere, South Shore).
I love Boston. It is a world class city and a fantastic place to live.
Southie is not Back Bay but in just a few years it will be. Every year more and more yuppies move in.
My insurance company took care of me. I replaced it with another BMW and in a matter if days my life returned to normal. I can chuckle at some loser totaling my ride, I think I can handle a couple key scratches.
I started plowing snow at 14 when my father dropped me in a MBTA parking lot in a 1982 ford bronco and left me there alone for 26 hours, ultimately spent 20 years plowing and it paid for no small part of my college education. Some of the most surreal times of my life were spent pushing snow. You get to see every phase of an extreme weather event; satellite images as it forms up the coast then as it manifests outside your door, then your in it 12 - 24- 48 hours. I would love being out there at 3 am when a storm would break, the clouds scatter, and the sky would open to crisp winter stars and brilliant moonlight radiating off fresh snow and ice. No one else around, a solitary experience made divine by sleep deprivation and the hum of diesel engine vibration remnants in your bones. Working long, hard hours through the elements, these are the experiences that CAN make a man (with a receptive attitude) real and potent. I am grateful for hours spent pushing snow, and now I am grateful to be done, there's nothing easy about it.

For as with all King's he views himself as being above the law.
