So here�s the deal. I'm a voice teacher who gets $40 per hour for a lesson and that's great. I love doing it. I'm friendly, supportive, but demanding (in a nice way).

But I'm looking for a very special kind of student. Maybe you or a friend or relative of yours, that I'd coach for 2 half-price lessons ($20) just for the joy of having a great student. The kind who has a voice with potential, who wants to be a singer really BAD and is willing to work hard at it.

So, what are the qualifications?

1. You have to have, or believe you have, some kind of gift for singing that can be developed into a voice that people want to pay money to hear.

2. If you already have a voice that people are paying to hear you have to want to take your singing to the next level.

3. It would be nice if you�ve had voice coaching in the past. Why? I like the challenge of being compared to other voice coaches...because I honestly think there's a lot of them out there that aren't that good when it comes to pop/soul/rock/blues/jazz/country, etc.

4. A flexible schedule is helpful. Weekdays up to 2pm are best for me. But for the right person I'd fit something in...even on a weekend. (Showing up, and showing up on time is important...missing a lesson without calling ahead means you�re dropped...don't mean to be harsh but I want students who take their singing as seriously as I do.)

5. You want to be coached on anything but opera or show tunes...no offense intended because I love show tunes...it's just that there are already a lot of good teachers out there for that.

6. And now the BIG one - you actually have to have the MOTIVATION to devote the time necessary to practicing. That's my definition of someone who wants to sing. Practicing less than what�s needed to me is someone who WISHES they could sing...not someone who WANTS to sing.

Maybe the best of all the internet resources is called The Voice Council Forum which is a great place to communicate with professional and aspiring singers and voice teachers about improving their craft with anything that has to do with singing. The link is http://forums.voicecouncil.com/ There are a lot of people who know a lot of stuff on this site and they share their experiences on every aspect of singing you can imagine. There's a corporate connection for stuff that's available for sale but you can take it or leave it...there's no requirement to buy anything.

For you indie rock singers that are big into screaming and worry about how to keep it from ruining your voice, here's a great link to Melissa Cross who is called the "Queen of Scream"

One last thing...I don't accept students who are having any kind of health issue with their voice that prevents them from putting in the full practice time. Exercises for keeping your hands and fingers nimble, loose and open, and your arms, shoulders and back relaxed. This will allow you to practice and perform longer without developing repetitive stress injuries in your hands, wrists and forearms, or back and neck tension or other problems that will diminish your performance ability, shorten your musical career or enjoyment, and interfere with other aspects of your life.

No matter what instrument your play, your primary instrument is your body. If it doesn�t function optimally, your music won�t be at its best either. Guitar, bass, and keyboard players all have similar challenges in avoiding repetitive stress injuries, carpal tunnel, tendinitis, and neck, back, and shoulder problems due to repetitive movements and performance posture. Guitar and bass players face an additional burden from the weight of their instruments. Drummers can have similar issues, and others arising from percussive impact.

I�m a bass player and a doctor of Chinese medicine, in the alternative health field and a teacher of taiji and qigong for about 25 years. I�ve treated many musicians with various types of repetitive stress and related injuries. If you�re relatively young, you might not notice the early signs of damage being done. The majority of musicians really start noticing problems in their 40s, but I see many people in their 30s, and even some in their 20s. While many of these problems can be reversed after they occur, prevention is always better than cure.

The very best things people can do preventatively and for overall health maintenance are taiji and specific types of qigong, but few take the time to learn those more complex methods well enough to be of real benefit. I�ve distilled the best simple self care exercises from numerous systems into a program that can be taught to you fully in just two hours, and even a one hour session will be of great benefit. This is not intended to be a whole body self care program, but only targets the areas that get most physically stressed from playing stringed instruments, keyboards, and percussion.

Singers and horn players, I can also work with you and tailor a program to fit your needs. Among other things, that would include specific breathing practices not commnly taught by vocal coaches and horn instructors.

Once learned, ten minutes or so each day is all you need. Invest one or two hours of your time now for a lifetime of benefit!

...ok I'm not sure what the first guy who posted something to publically offend you said ( your right, probably some moron who has a huge dick when they are behind a keyboard), and yes I am not a huge fan of rap, but being a musician, I appreciate and give credit to the "artists" if you will, for doing what they do. Alot of anemosity has stemed from conglomerats like MTV who put their idea of "music" forward in a tight cute little mindless package, for all the ADD ridden teeny boppers and unevolved adults to feed off of. If you ask me it's like elevator music on prozak! There are too many people who go around bashing this artist, or bashing that artist, either just to make a joke, or make themselfs feel good. Who cares! Form your own opinion and move on! Lifes too short to complain how one artist sucks harder than the next one!

Also... If you plan on making a point in a public display, cut out the swearing and misguided angst! As well as all the racial slurs! You do realize that for every swear and slur you throw in to your little tirade rant, your credibility drops two fold! To me it just sounded like you were trying to fit as many slurs, and swears in as you could befor time runs out! It's almost like a bad Nickelodeon game show! So at the end of your entire rant, all I could gather is that you helped to further the stereotype that us "cracker mofos" identify black people with, and totally contradicted your own point! I don't make the rules, I just follow them!

Lastly, I'm sure that whatever the first guy said to provoke your responce absolutly deserved it! There too many white people trying to be "thug" or "gangsta" or whatever they consider themselfs to be! All I know is this, I live by one philosophy; Be yourself, everyone else is taken!

Hello,

I'm just starting an open mic night in Fanieul Hall on Mondays at Hennessy's. This was a regular acoustic gig for me but I've had musicians come down to jam and play their songs as well as cover songs and decided to make it a showcase for people to play, jam, and promote themselves. There is a decent sized stage that can accommodate a five piece band easily and bands are welcome. However. I am only running powered speakers and a 4-channel mixer on this gig. I save the 16 channel mixer and the subwoofers for the loud, weekend gigs. Vocals and stage volume are fine for this room. I will only have one mic and one stand so people who need their guitars mic'd will need to bring an instrument mic and stand. There are only a few performers now so the time slots are pretty much open and the crowd is usually pretty easy-going and music friendly. The bartender actually books acts at some clubs in Boston as well such as Great Scott.

The Open mic signup is 8PM and officially starts at 9PM.

I believe there is also a $2 draft deal at Hennessy's.

We are a four piece band (Guitar/singer, ld guitar, drums, and bass) that plays mostly originals and practices in Allston. I guess if you tried to classify us we'd be mostly hard rock with a little progressive thrown in (i.e. some time sig changes, complex chords etc.). We are looking for a new bass player with vocal chops enough to sing harmonies, some leads if desired. Over the last few months we have had many successful gigs in the Boston area. Looking for a Bass player who loves to play and knows how to play for fun and with heart. There are 3 of us in the band already, but we've only been practicing for a couple months.
Currently starting the process to rent a rehearsal space so we can practice whenever, if you are interested you will have to share some of the cost for the practice space.
