JOB OPENING:
PHOENIX CHARTER ACADEMY SCHOOL NURSE

OUR MISSION: To close the achievement gap that exists between educationally disenfranchised adolescents and their more academically successful peers.

OUR HISTORY: We are a two year old public charter high school, located in Chelsea MA, and serving students from Chelsea, Lynn, Revere and the surrounding communities. At the moment, there is no other school in the state (public, charter or independent) that successfully provides previously disenfranchised students with the opportunity to participate in a rigorous, college-preparatory program.

In September 2006, we opened our doors to 75 students; already, wonderful things have begun to happen:

• Students who have been out of school for years attend Phoenix Charter Academy every day.
• Students who recently immigrated to the United States are learning to read books—in English--to their own children (13 of our students are young mothers).
• Students who have never taken a leadership role in school now take part in the student government, provide tours to visitors, and participate in the hiring of new teachers.

Phoenix Charter Academy is built on an unshakeable belief in the capacity of our students to overcome these circumstances, regain control of their academic futures, and recast themselves as strong, well-educated, and self-sufficient adults.

OUR NEED: Part time Registered Nurse. Our students come to PCA with little health education, and few medical resources. Part of our mission is to help our students to learn to make healthy decisions about their physical and mental development. Our nurse will be an integral part of this part of our students’ education.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Oversee student medical needs, including the dispensation of medication.
• Work with the Special Education Administrator on the management of Independent Education Plan-related health needs.
• Maintain student medical records, including immunizations.
• Review plans for addressing the medical needs of the children at the PCA Childcare Development Center.
• Develop and use an active network of referral services to support students in making healthy decisions about their physical heath.
• Communicate with parents/guardians as necessary.
• Work with students on Preventative Health Measures:
• Teach a Health Class each quarter. The course will meet twice a week for 60 minutes, and can be enhanced with guest speakers, media presentations and an adolescent health curriculum. The focus of the course will be healthy decision-making, addressing such topics as nutrition and exercise, the affects of smoking, drugs and alcohol on the body, and sex, sexuality and reproduction.
• If interested, it may also be possible to run groups for students with particular health issues: smoking cessation, drug and alcohol abuse, pregnancy and birth, infant and toddler health, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Nursing degree with an appropriate active license
• At least 2 years experience doing similar or relevant work
• Self-starter who shows initiative and produces results with minimal direction
• Able to work well under pressure, remain organized while working on multiple projects, and meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy.
• Accuracy, attention to detail and ability to maintain the highest of standards in record-keeping are essential.
• Proficiency with MS Office and e-mail
• Bilingual: Spanish is preferred
• Familiar with the Lynn, Revere and Chelsea area, its youth, and community resources.
