The City of Cambridge is piloting an 18-week parenting education and support program, modeled on Harlem Children’s Zone Baby College, for parents of children pre-natal to age 3. The goal of this program is two-fold; first to provide parents with the most advanced research-based information on parenting and child development and second to enable parents to successfully connect and remain connected to the vast array of beneficial local social services. This pilot project will involve a total of 60 low-income families located in two distinct neighborhoods of the city. The Care Worker will recruit families into the program, provide weekly home visits, and help connect families to local resources. Day-to-day supervision for the position will be provided by the Parent Education Program Coordinator.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Recruit parents in the targeted neighborhoods to participate in 10-week workshop series and 8-week playgroup session.
• Keep accurate records and complete all required paperwork: outreach and recruitment forms for each family contacted, attendance at events, home visit notes, family continuation plans, etc.
• Attend workshops and playgroups with assigned parents. Encourage each family’s participation during workshops and playgroups.
• Visit assigned families in their homes once a week with the goal of helping parents understand and practice new techniques and strategies outlined in workshops and playgroups.
• Become familiar with available community resources for children and families.
• With the help of the Coordinator and community–based partners, refer and connect families to services that benefit the development of their children.
• Alert Parenting Education Program Coordinator of any critical concerns.
• Help the Parenting Education Program Coordinator copy and assemble documents for families participating in workshops and playgroups.
• Help create an environment of openness and trust with families.
• Participate as needed in the evaluation of the program.
• Protect the confidentiality of all families.
• Participate in regular staff meetings and supervision meetings as required.
• Attend all necessary staff development activities and training sessions.
• Perform all other duties that may be necessary.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Experience working with children as a parent or childcare provider preferred. Some knowledge of family
support principles, child development, and early education a plus.
• High motivation and interest in supporting children’s growth and development.
• Interest in working in a multicultural environment with diverse families.
• Comfortable talking to new people.
• Friendly and non-judgmental; able to relate well with diverse groups and individuals.
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn about community resources.
• Organized and able to keep accurate records.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills to enable.
• Fluency in English essential, bilingual/bicultural candidates a plus.
• Able to work evening and weekend hours.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must have sufficient mobility to travel, on a regular basis, to different sites within the City. Employee must occasionally transport materials weighing up to 50 pounds from one site to another. WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Outdoors in housing developments & parks, as well as in the homes of families participating in the program. General office environment including community rooms with air conditioners and florescent lighting.
