Sermons on relevant topics
This Church is a mixture of traditional and modern practices. Did we mention the magnificent Fisk organ? We welcome all visitors and residents of such surrounding neighborhoods of Beacon Hill, South End, Back Bay, Cambridge and the North End. Many who attend are visitors to the greater Boston area from other states and nations.
Old West Church is a home to a hub of non-profits, union meetings, environmental groups and invites others to set up operations here. Old West Church also houses the GLBT Metropolitan Community Church.
Our building is a beautiful structure that is on the registry of National Historic Landmarks with a glorious and progressive history. An early Pastor, Jonathan Mayhew, was one of the first to call for separation from England. The British burned down the church to prevent it from signaling to the ‘rebels.’ It was a way station on the ‘Underground railway’ for slaves escaping North. It is also where John F. Kennedy voted in the 1960 presidential election.
The Church is also the location of many baptisms and weddings that are both of Methodist as well as inter-religious ceremonies of special beauty.
