18 Profitable Ways to Boost Direct Marketing Response.

In a discussion group @ BU Marketing classes in January, Geoff Hasler will outline more DM strategies.

1.
Don�t Forget Postcards.

Very overlooked marketing method. Smart marketers use postcards to clean lists cheaply, test new marketing concepts and for high ticket item lead generation. Some marketers mail millions of postcards weekly. One client nets almost one million dollars weekly, using postcards.

2.
Live Stamps Boost Response.

Use live stamps, not indicia or preprinted postage. How many times do you get a personal letter WITHOUT a stamp? Also, take your company name OFF the carrier. Teaser copy that I have had best results with � IMPORTANT. CONFIDENTIAL. DO NOT FOLD.

3.
Upsell, Upsell.

I walked into a casual restaurant the other day, and after I ordered they tried a simple upsell that would have added 50% extra profit I estimate to the establishment. Sometimes we forget to upsell with phone & online orders, they can add excellent profits to the bottom line.

4.
Use Involvement Devices.

Too many marketers are forgetting to use involvement devices on the reply/order form. Just a simple �Put This Sticker in the empty Box� can boost response 15%.

5.
Color Matters.

Don�t laugh, this is serious. Why are most Ferraris red? Does blue help IBM? McDonalds spent millions deciding on the right colors. Don�t create a great brand concept and devalue it with the wrong colors. Tips � upscale customers prefer muted colors. Downscale customers like bright colors. Men prefer blue. Women like red. Silver and gold means expensive. White means pure. Yellow means sunny. Black means mysterious, exotic, powerful. Green means outdoors, environmentally conscious. Orange reminds us of food. Blue, to men, means quality. To women blue may mean professional but maybe stuffy. Women think red means warmth. To men, red is exciting and dangerous.

6.
Patriotism Sells.

Depending upon the product or service, a flag image boosts response. Fox News has a permanent flag, waving as background. Patriotism works as a response concept.

7.
Long Copy Vs Short Copy.

All my DM winners have had super long copy. A 32 page letter will outpull a 4 page letter. A 16 page brochure will outpull an 8 page. Long copy sells, PROVIDED that it�s FACT-PACKED and addresses all the issues. Once, a full page ad in the Wall Street Journal pulled an OK response. We doubled the copy content and the results were 85% better.

8.
Lift Letters work.

Lift letters work. National Geographic was not sure which lift note to use, they were both good. They used both � and response was way better than using just one or the other.

9.
Always Say �You�.

Many marketers forget � you�re communicating with the market, one person at a time. So, personalize your message by addressing the recipient in a personal; way and always insure that your copy talks about �you�. We all read messages that seem more personal.

10.
Good Copy is Not always Good Grammar.

Sometimes, we need to use vernacular rather than strictly grammatically correct sentences. Winston Churchill said it best � �that is something, up with which I cannot put�.

11.
Be Highly Specific in Headlines & Copy.

�Get An Amazing Lift in Response� will not pull as well as � �How To get an 85% Increase in Response in 28 Days�.

12.
Use Credible Copy.

Which headline worked best?

�How to Get a 38% Increase in Your Investment�

�How to Get an 17% Increase in Your Investment�

The second headline worked better, it was more credible.

13.
Use Independent Third Party Endorsements, where ever possible.

If your client has outside testimonials, use them. Good headlines such as these work � �Acura Won the JD Power Customer Satisfaction Award for Three Years�; �Car & Driver Magazine Ranks Mercedes Benz as the Best Overall Car In Its Class�.

14.
Use Follow Up Mailings.

Especially for high ticket purchases, use follow-up mailings & telemarketing. One client mails 13 letters, over eight weeks, to generate leads for a $5,000 profit service. One or two letters does not cut it.

15.
Use Email Marketing.

Programs like Constant Contact based here in Boston enable marketers to present an excellent image to prospects and enable you to market yourself constantly to your customer and prospect lists. Programs like this have pre-existing templates that you can customize with your own copy & images. A great, inexpensive marketing tool.

16.
What Makes a Good DM Product?

Is your profit high enough? A good DM product must be capable of at least a 3:1 markup. Is the retail price above $20? Low retail priced DM products are tough to make viable. Is the product/service unique? The more unique it is, the better. �Not available in stores� is a powerful copy point.

17.
Baby Boomer Market Strong � and Getting Stronger.

By 2025, the over 60 market will be the main age group. There�ll be twice as many people over 65 as teenagers! So, conceive products/services that cater to this strong market with plenty of buying power.

18.
Sunbelt & Coasts are the Most Responsive Parts of the Country.

The most responsive parts of the country are the Coasts & the Sunbelt. Some TV marketers say that the South East is the best market of all, a great test market for new products. If they don�t buy it, maybe no-one will!

Frederic Chopin, whose 200th birthday is March 1st, 2010, played a square piano in his youth in Poland, and continued to perform on them in salons and even in concert halls into the 1840's. And much of his music was written to be played in parlors which often were equipped with pianos much like the Loring-Greenough House fortepiano. PAUL WEBER, a top TV/film casting executive at MGM Studios in Los Angeles, will be the special guest at two East Coast casting workshops:

NYC: Saturday, January 23rd at 1pm $200 ($100 deposit is fine)

BOSTON: Sunday, January 24th at 1pm $200 ($100 deposit is fine)

LOCATIONS TO BE ANNOUNCED.

The casting workshops will start with 2 hours of lecture and Q & A. There will be a refreshment break, and then the last 2 to 3 hours will involve Paul Weber handing out sides for readings. You'll have about 15 minutes to go outside and rehearse, and then everyone comes back in for the readings. Paul Weber will give actors critiques, direction, a lot of feedback, and a wealth of valuable career advice. He'll go through everyone's pictures and resumes, and will be available for any questions you may have. You are also welcome to perform your own 3-minute monologue or scene.

The Paul Weber casting workshops give actors and actresses a lot of one-on-one time with one of the top casting executives in the business. It's a terrific opportunity to be seen and showcase your talents.

The host of the casting workshops is LINDA STUART, author of the successful book GETTING YOUR SCRIPT THROUGH THE HOLLYWOOD MAZE. Linda Stuart is also a comic character actress in SAG and Equity in Los Angeles where she hosts top casting, agent, and manager events for actors and actresses.

The cost for each casting workshop is $200, but there are definitely promotional discounts available. If you bring 2 or more paying people to any casting workshop, you (yourself) attend for just $175. If you bring 5 or more paying people to any casting workshop, you attend for just $150.

Pre-registration is required since Paul Weber will be traveling from Los Angeles to the East Coast events. If you would like to split the payment in two, that is perfectly fine, but the full amount must be paid prior to the casting workshops. Thank you for your understanding.

Locations will be set as the casting workshop dates get closer, but rest assured that just as my Los Angeles event locations are nice and associated with the entertainment industry, so will my East Coast events be held at nice venues.

HE Duke and Duchess of Windsor did it. Ethel Merman did it. J.Edgar Hoover did it. Frank Costello did it. John F. Kennedy did it. When the lights went down on Broadway, they migrated, at one time or another, across town to the velvet-and-silver world of the Stork Club. Founded as a speak-easy in the Roaring Twenties, Sherman Billingsley's oasis at 3 East 53d Street (now Paley Park) reached its apotheosis in the 40's, drawing movie stars and political bosses, gangsters, aristocrats and generals on wartime leave.

John Perona's zebra-striped El Morocco spelled sophistication, and the sporting crowd gravitated to Toots Shor's. But power, wealth and beauty intersected at the Stork Club. Hatchery for the new celebrity culture of cafe society, the Stork was where the debutante Brenda Frazier, the original famous-for-being-famous playgirl, drank white spiders, where Irving Berlin first hummed "Easter Parade" to Walter Winchell over the phone ("Not one of your best," Winchell decided) and where the classical pianist Jos� Iturbi regaled New Year's celebrators with an impromptu solo recital. Until, that is, Billingsley cautioned his friend, the columnist Leonard Lyons, to have Iturbi "pipe down." "The noise will bring the cops," Billingsley said. The real entertainment was the patrons themselves. People came to see and be seen; if a regular didn't show up one night, he or she was assumed to be sick. And who was the ultimate arbiter at the door's 14-karat gold chain, deciding who was and was not fit to enter? Naturally, Billingsley himself, a former Oklahoma bootlegger whose original partners were the mob trio of Owney (The Killer) Madden of the Cotton Club, the rumrunner king William V. (Big Bill) Dwyer and George Jean (Big Frenchy) De Mange. Who else but an alumnus of Leavenworth like Billingsley, a onetime barefoot boy from the Cherokee Strip, would police the social scene with such imperious authority?The Stork outlasted the war and the Eisenhower 50's, when it starred in its own awkward and celebrity-besotted television program. But halfway into the psychedelic 60's, it expired, victim of a ruinous battle over unionization, lingering charges of racism and most of all, perhaps, a changing culture. The hatcheck girls who used to know everyone by sight suddenly had to study copies of TV Guide to recognize the new celebrities. It was the kiss of death. Billingsley himself succumbed in 1966, on the first anniversary of the Stork's demise.

Worried about Driving in the Snow and Ice? (Dalton, NH)

If you're reading this, you probably live in New England, and you almost certainly have to drive in the snow. Maybe you drive a car with all-wheel-drive (such as an Audi with Quattro). Maybe you drive an SUV, or a Toyota Prius, or a BMW. Maybe you have been driving for 50 years in New England winters. Or you just got your learner's permit a few months ago and will soon drive in snow for the first time.

A wise man in all things automotive once said "If a meteorite hits your car, that's an accident. Anything else is driver error." Why not learn to drive in snow where you can safely make mistakes? For less than half the cost of the average auto insurance deductible, you can spend two days at a purpose-built facility learning to control your car in snow and on ice. You will learn the correct responses to all types of skids, slides, and spins, and you will practice these until they feel natural. You will overcome fears you might have about driving in snow and ice, and become a more skilled and more confident driver.

The North Atlantic Audi Club will host a three two-day Winter Driving Schools (WDS) on January 23-24, February 6-7, and February 27-28, 2010. These two-day schools include a classroom session covering the vital fundamentals of winter driving, including the finer points of accelerating, braking, weight transfer, and steering on ice and snow. Participants then navigate a closed course at Team O�Neil�s Car Control Center (http://www.team-oneil.com) in Dalton, New Hampshire, specially designed for winter driving instruction. Experienced instructors offer direction as students pilot their own vehicles through a proven curriculum that includes obstacle courses designed to simulate real-world accident avoidance, including emergency steering, braking and skid control. Participants will gain invaluable winter driving experience and improve their ability to react quickly and confidently to real-world driving situations frequently encountered in winter driving.

Please note that we are now requiring snow tires (with the snowflake symbol) on all two-wheel-drive (FWD and RWD) vehicles, and strongly recommend snow tires on ALL vehicles. All-wheel-drive helps you get going but it doesn't help you stop. However, you do NOT need to own, drive, or bring an Audi. All sorts of vehicles are welcome as long as they have adequate tires.

For those of you who have come to our Winter Driving Schools in the past, please note that we have events at two different facilities at Team O'Neil's this year. The January (23-24) and late February (27-28) schools will be in the traditional location. The early February (6-7) school will be at a new course at Team O'Neil's that includes a larger skid pad and multi-purpose exercise area, but with fewer hills. Both schools will be fun and educational, but the early February school might be the better choice for front- and rear-wheel-drive cars, as it has a flatter terrain.

We are thrilled to have the headquarters for these events at two wonderful hotels. The January (23-24) and late February (27-28) schools will be headquartered at the Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa again this year. We DJ children's parties (our specialty) adult parties and all kinds of functions. I also offer a number of Lighting Packages and something new. ****Karaoke w/ 4-Wireless Mikes!
My prices are very reasonable. We are less expensive than most DJ's. Compare! We hand out Give-a Ways, which are props that go along with different songs, that everyone can take home with them. EAST COAST ACTORS! CASTING WORKSHOPS WITH PAUL WEBER FROM MGM STUDIOS

PAUL WEBER, a top TV/film casting executive at MGM Studios in Los Angeles, will be the special guest at two East Coast casting workshops:

NYC: Saturday, January 23rd from noon to 5pm (location to be set): $200 ($100 deposit is fine)

BOSTON: Sunday, January 24th from noon to 5pm (location to be set) $200 ($100 deposit is fine)

The casting workshops will start with 2 hours of lecture and Q & A. There will be a refreshment break, and then the last 2 to 3 hours will involve Paul Weber handing out sides for readings. You'll have about 15 minutes to go outside and rehearse, and then everyone comes back in for the readings. Paul Weber will give actors critiques, direction, a lot of feedback, and a wealth of valuable career advice. He'll go through everyone's pictures and resumes, and will be available for any questions you may have. You are also welcome to perform your own 3-minute monologue or scene.

The Paul Weber casting workshops give actors and actresses a lot of one-on-one time with one of the top casting executives in the business. It's a terrific opportunity to be seen and showcase your talents.

The host of the casting workshops is LINDA STUART, author of the successful book GETTING YOUR SCRIPT THROUGH THE HOLLYWOOD MAZE. Linda Stuart is also a comic character actress in SAG and Equity in Los Angeles where she hosts top casting, agent, and manager events for actors and actresses.

The cost for each casting workshop is $200, but there are definitely promotional discounts available. If you bring 2 or more paying people to any casting workshop, you (yourself) attend for just $175. If you bring 5 or more paying people to any casting workshop, you attend for just $150.

Pre-registration is required since Paul Weber will be traveling from Los Angeles to the East Coast events. If you would like to split the payment in two, that is perfectly fine, but the full amount must be paid prior to the casting workshops. Thank you for your understanding.

Locations will be set as the casting workshop dates get closer, but rest assured that just as my Los Angeles event locations are nice and associated with the entertainment industry, so will my East Coast events be held at nice venues.
