The playwright William Shakespeare is regarded as one of the most creative dramatic geniuses of situation and character ever produced by Western culture. Come discover, through reading, discussion, acting out scenes, and viewing others doing so, why Shakespeare is so highly regarded and loved. In this safe, supportive course, we will explore two of Shakespeare’s most challenging and provocative works: Othello, and The Merchant of Venice. In each play, the title character – a Moor and a Jew, respectively-is respected for what he can o to keep his society afloat, but, because of his race or religion, is not respected as a full human being. Was Shakespeare simply displaying the prejudices of his contemporaries, or can we find a more nuanced interpretation, relevant to our current times? Through our explorations of this writer of unparalleled skills, we can experience and understand our own human feelings, aspirations, and failings. For further information, please call Stan at 781-648-6000 or 781-405-3408 or e-mail at sedelson2@verizon.net.

Advanced Acting Lab Workshop

The Advanced Acting Lab Workshop is for those who have already taken ‘Anyone Can Act’ or its equivalent and who are now ready for more in depth serious character work and scene study.

The teacher Stan Edelson draws from Shakespeare, Stanislavski, Sanford Meisner, The Actors Studio, Grotoski and even more contemporary models, and his own unique acting approach.

Acting is a form of self and social liberation.

Acting in a laboratory setting is an exploration of what has been, what is and what can be. Inspirational and creative to the max is the way to go. We will draw from the classics and potentonally create our own classic manifestations of theater/film art!

Call Stan for further information and how to register (781) 648-6000 or (781) 405-3408 or e-mail at sedelson2@verizon.net.

10 Fridays-3 hours each session
Starting January 22, 2010 7-10pm
Tuition $250
This is a private class held at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education
56 Brattle Street, Harvard Square, Cambridge

Addendum to the description for the
Advanced Acting Lab Workshop

I am doing something very exciting-unusual and I believe rewarding for al who get on board.

The Winter Advanced Acting Lab Workshop starting as a private class will have a continuum into the Spring Terms CCAE- Advanced Acting Lab Workshop.

Now, let it be understood, that you can take this class only for the Winter Term or only for the Spring Term or for both.

Now, the reason is as follows:

We will be tackling a ‘WOW’ project.

Have you ever heard of Willie Shakespeare and especially Willie’s masterpiece King Lear?

And, have you ever heard of Stan Edelson’s joyous venture into taking King Lear on an adventurous ride into the twenty six century? Well don’t believe it. It will still take place where and when it was conceived-however it will have some changes-modifications and elaborations. . .

. . . that will make it more accessible and possible for audiences of today-to swallow-it-hook-line-and-sinker, courageously. This play is about love at first mis-understood by the cantankerous retiring King of Britannia – and finally after a series of arduous and appalling even horrifying lessons learned, love, finally emerges victorious. Although too late for the King his offspring’s and other circling around his moat. It is a very human masterfully told tragedy.

Now don’t be appalled that we will use much of Shakespeare’s language.
Everything will be explained, understood and made playable. And you will have an acting experience par excellence.
Don’t miss it!

To finally do the play to a high performance level will take time. That’s why it will be done over a two term ‘hike’. Up the mountain, down the mountain, all around the mountain and deep inside the mountain.

Be intrigued to ask questions, get further questions and answers and have a delicious time learning first, second and third hand what having a full hand in acting poker is all about.

Call Stan at (781) 648-6000 or (781) 405-3408 or e-mail at sedelson2@verizon.net.

Creating A Play or Filmscript
(For Writers, Directors and Actors)

Starting with a pencil, pen or keyboard in hand. . . . Stop yourself and look around you, look behind you, look beyond you, better yet, close your eyes and look inside you.

What do you see, what do you hear, and what do you smell? Better yet, what touches you? What cause or causes urges you to express yourself, to grasp boldly in your hand and not yet wisely. . .

Come first to class to learn, playfully, seriously or both to shape your feelings and thoughts. Next with guidance, safety and support step by step hand yourself a script, be it a play or film. And then in class have excerpts from your script acted out by members of the class.

Final class can be doing an excerpt reading of your creative work to an invited audience.

Instructor Stan has written and directed dozens of scripts and loves teaching, you to be your artistic self.

How do you combine a passion for weaving, a love of photography and skills in graphic design? You create one-of-a-kind, jacquard hand-woven wall hangings, scarves and more.
Chriztine's work involves the taking of photographs that are manipulated in the computer and woven on a hand jacquard loom, into unique designs. She works on jacquard and traditional looms creating brocades, samits, shaft shifting and complex weave structures turning them into tapestries, rugs, fabrics for the home and body.
The word Za Za in its true ancient form means “plenty for everyone,” and this mantra rings true for “Za Za Restaurant & Nitery,” a casual dining restaurant located minutes North of Boston, MA. Situated on Route 1-North, amongst a sea of old New England Kitsch, this hidden jewel serves some of the best seafood, steaks and regional-Italian fare presented by Chef Manrique Alvarenga. Items such as seafood risotto, herb-rubbed rack of lamb and Gemelli and Sweet Italian Sausage dot the menu. Nightly specials are always available along with a full Tapas Menu. A variety of 45 handcrafted martinis, spirits, wine and beer are served in the full-service 360° lounge. The 140-seat restaurant also boasts a 20-seat outdoor patio, private function room and dance floor.
►►►LEARN PHOTOGRAPHY!

MacPherson Studios - Photography Classes
Winter 2010 Classes booking now!

Introduction to Photography
-
$129.00, includes course materials
3 class sessions. All classes meet from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

This course is designed for those with little or no experience in photography, beyond using a “point & shoot” in automatic modes.

The objective of the course is to help you to get the image you have in your mind to be the one that you see in your shot. You’ll come home with a course book handouts for later reference and lot of knowledge that’s designed specifically for those who just want to take better pictures, without going in to all sorts of unnecessary details.

We'll cover the basics, so you'll have a good foundation of knowledge, and we'll spend some time on each students camera, showing you exactly how to use it to get good exposures and memorable images.

We'll have a couple of challenging photo assignments too. This is where you'll start to apply the lessons you've just learned - and you'll see your photography skills grow!

Classes meet in Scituate on Saturday nights.

Advanced Photography
-
$195.00, includes course materials
5 class sessions. All classes meet from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

This course is designed for those who are shooting with a DSLR, or are ready to buy one.

This course starts with a quick review of the basics and moves on to advanced concepts that will help you to get the most from your camera.

We cover lighting, composition, exposure, white balance, shooting techniques and more. We also include some fun and challenging photo assignments and (weather permitting), shooting in the field – these exercises help you to gain hands-on experience with all that you’ve learned.

Classes meet in Scituate Sunday nights

All classes are limited to 6 students in order to provide the best possible learning experience.

Spaces are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis and are guaranteed when your payment is received.

Full-Day Private Lessons

MacPherson Studios is pleased to offer Full-Day Private lessons. This is a one-on-one day of learning that is completely customized to your individual needs. We’ll work together for at least 8 hours - which can be split into two 4 hour sessions with no additional charge.

Typically this day starts with classroom / workbook training and will include elements from the Introduction to Photography and/or Advanced Photography courses as needed.

Following some learning time, we get out into the field to do some live shooting where I’ll give you specific instruction on your camera and the functions it offers. Then we’ll process your images with either Photoshop, the editor that came with your camera or a free photo editor like Picassa.

Depending on weather, some prefer to start the day with an early morning / sunrise shoot instead, and I’m happy to oblige! We get some great sunrises over Scituate Harbor and you’ll come home with some terrific images. If we're lucky, we'll even see the family of Red Fox that live there - some students have captured incredible images of them!

Some students who are ready to buy a new camera, lenses or other accessories have asked that I go with them to a camera store to help them make a better buying decision, and I’m happy to do so during our day together.

To summarize, the Full-Day Private Lesson is not only a lot of fun, but you’ll get hands-on, individual attention with content completely customized to your needs and desires.

The Full-Day Private Lesson is $299 and includes course materials from the Advanced Photography course, so you'll have an excellent reference book for future use.

Some comments from previous class and workshop participants:
Steve is an excellent teacher, consistently patient, creative, and skillful. Steve uses a variety of approaches to explain the Taiji form, including demonstrations, (partner) exercises, and even metaphor. He is extremely knowledgeable concerning the underpinnings of Taiji, its health benefits and its martial arts applications. He gives personal attention to each student and breaks down the complicated form into smaller elements that are easier to understand. Steve also has a pleasant, helpful manner that makes the class enjoyable. I would enthusiastically recommend his classes to anyone interested in the benefits of Taiji. Sincerely,
John Heymann
“Very well organized and comprehensive. This was an excellent class, one of the best I’ve taken.”
Donald Currie, L.Ac.

In high school I injured my shoulder wrestling and playing football. It has been bothering me for twenty years, I tried everything I could think of to help it, stretching, going to various doctors including physical therapy, but after a few months it was only slightly better. I work in construction, so this was interfering with my work as well as with most other aspects of my life, and I still was not able to get better. I recently decided to get back in shape and began lifting weights and the pain came back worse then ever and I had to stop doing shoulder exercises. I read an article on Qigong and figured it was worth a try so I looked up Steve and signed up for private lessons. I explained my shoulder problems to him and he taught me some Chinese exercises, and after just two weeks of learning and practicing my shoulder felt almost back to normal. Now, I'm able to work, sleep, and live my life without shoulder pain, and I've even been able to resume lifting weights." Dean Gilligan
For greater health, more energy, and longevity.
This course is a continuation of Level 1. The focus of the Level 2 class is on breathing, linking the seven movements learned in Level 1, and physical refinements to the seven movements. This class is open to those who have learned the Level 1 material (the basic movements of the form), and is a recommended review to deepen the Dragon & Tiger practice for those who have taken Level 2, 3, or attended a weekend workshop
Dragon and Tiger has some similarities to taiji (tai chi), but it is simpler to do and easier to remember. In China, it has been used to treat cancer and other degenerative diseases.

Opening the Energy Gates Qigong/Neigong, Level 1 class begins 1/7 (Arlington)

Over 2.000 years old, this ancient foundational Daoist neigong builds internal strength by facilitating a physical and energetic openness through relaxed stationary and moving practices that emphasize proper body alignments, Daoist breathing, and mental focus. Through this practice, more qi is encouraged to flow freely throughout the entire body. By learning to use the mind to work deeply inside the body at increasingly more subtle levels, the practitioner becomes able to maximize movement capacity and energy levels and deepen meditation, while relieving stress, pain, and reversing the course of many chronic diseases.

Included are an introduction to basic Daoist breathing techniques and the following inwardly-focused exercises which harmonize and balance the qi, energize and strengthen the internal organs and adjust and stabilize internal alignments.

Standing Practice
In this core stationary practice, a very detailed Zhan Zhuang (“Standing Like a Stake”) sometimes referred to as Standing Meditation, focused awareness is used to first perceive and then clear energy blockages from the physical and energy body in a general way--the “outer dissolving” practice--while preparing the mind for deeper meditative practices. Later, the student learns to identify and feel energy gates which define a primary energy matrix within the body. Any qi stagnation or other obstruction that may be present can then be dissolved, allowing the gates to open more fully and function optimally. Some of these gates coincide with acupuncture points, while others are unique to qigong.

Cloud Hands
The moving practice of Cloud Hands teaches proper body alignments while in motion, and is considered by many to be the best single movement exercise for overall health. It introduces the alignments and major movements of taiji (tai chi) while developing a strong ability to root, helping to further open the body, strengthen ligaments, heal or prevent joint problems, increase qi flow and harmonize yin and yang qi.

Daoist Spine Stretch
This unique spine stretch will help relax all the muscles of the back, neck and shoulders and relieve spinal tension and back pain, and begins the process of learning to control the movements of each vertebra individually.

3 Arm Swings
Three exercises to relax your arms, legs, and torso, relieving joint pain in the hips, arms and shoulders while energizing each major region of your body delineated by the sanjiao, or three burners. Each arm swing addresses one of the three burners.

Qi storage at the lower dantian is taught at the end of this qigong set.

This ten-week session will introduce the Standing Practice and Cloud Hands, and is open to everyone. This is an excellent class if you are just beginning a qigong practice.
This workshop will include an anatomy review and an explanation of the muscle(s) being targeted (relaxed and contracted) in each stretch. Demonstrations of each stretch will include detailed instructions for doing the stretch properly, as well as tips for doing the stretch effectively in order to get the most benefit. These are self-maintenance and self-recovery stretches.
This is a hands-on participation workshop.
This workshop will consist of approximately 60 percent lecture/demonstration and 40 percent hands-on practice. Everything done in this workshop will serve as the foundation for Sunday’s workshop.
This is a hands-on, interactive workshop. You will work with partners both giving and receiving a variety of Assisted Stretches that will target the major muscle groups of the entire body.
Our PRESCHOOL ALTERNATIVE PLAYGROUP meets once a week for 10 weeks. This group is a parent and child structured playgroup. Meeting times are facilitated by an educator who holds a degree in early childhood education.

Children and parents join together for:
-circle time with songs and stories
-a facilitated curriculum activity
-a goodbye meeting

Handouts are passed out with songs, recipes and activities to try at home to extend the lessons. This playgroup is a great introduction to preschool for toddlers and preschoolers not quite ready for a morning away from mom or dad, but ready to make friends and explore our preschool classroom. It's also a great opportunity to build a relationship with educators who are experts in early childhood education and can offer support for parents and growing preschoolers.

Dick's Last Resort Jingles All The Way To The New Year

NEW YEAR'S EVE BASH PROMISES CHAMPAGNE TOAST, HOT MUSIC & GREAT GRUB

Santa may be makin’ a list and checkin’ it twice, but his fun-loving elves know where the naughty and nice crowd is partying this holiday season -- at Dick's Last Resort in Quincy Market at Faneuil Hall Marketplace.

Just look at the Holiday Facts. Dick is, by nature, fat and jolly; his cheeks are usually nice and rosy; and to be honest, it's hardly a stretch for him to don a fuzzy red suit and try to jump-start a sleigh. So with the halls decked with enough tinsel and tacky twinkle lights to make even Tiny Tim kick up his little heels, Dick's will definitely be Mistletoe Central all month long for friends, family and the gang from work ( . . . whether ladies dancing or lords a-leaping).

COME EARLY, COME LATE -- IT'S GONNA BE 2010 EITHER WAY ! ! !
The merriest 31 days this side of a Sarah Palin - Levi Johnston Three-Legged Race will lead up to a confetti–flyin,’ champagne–poppin’ blow–out as Dick's says "Later Gator!" to 2009 with an outrageous New Year's Eve Bash on Thursday, December 31. For reservations, call 6 1 7 - 2 6 7 - 8 0 8 0.

The fun at Dick's is non-stop, and New Year's Eve is no exception. Early “First Night-ers" are encouraged to stop by Dick's for dinner between 4 and 8 P.M. and partake of the frivolity before headin’ out to enjoy their night of revelry, performances and celebration.

Then, starting at 8 P.M., there'll be a Celebration Cover Charge of $10 per person. All party folk will receive one of Dick's highly-coveted 2009 / 2010 Survival Kits, plus there'll be a fizzy Champagne Toast for everyone at Midnight.

Entertainment from The Grab Brothers will keep the joint jumpin’ ‘til the wee hours. And to end the year on an always delicious note, Dick's full menu of great grub will be available to order, from Bourbon-Glazed Salmon and Fried Shrimp to Ride'M Cowboy Rib Eye, King Crab Legs, Steak Salad, a succulent Seafood Platter, Brew-Battered Fish N' Chips, a temptin' Rib & Wing Combo, Dick's own Chowdah, and lots more.

SO WHADDA I DO WITH THE CAAAH . . . ? ? ?
No worries. There's discounted parking only steps away from Dick's at The Garage at 75 State Street ! Just bring your parking ticket to the front desk to be dealt with by one of Dick's always merry and bright staffers.

It's New Year's Eve -- and a night to remember. See you there, bub!

GEOFF HASLER - 18 DIRECT MARKETING STRATEGIES, BOSTON UNIVERSITY (Boston University)

18 Profitable Ways to Boost Direct Marketing Response.

In a discussion group @ BU Marketing classes in January, Geoff Hasler will outline more DM strategies.

1.
Don’t Forget Postcards.

Very overlooked marketing method. Smart marketers use postcards to clean lists cheaply, test new marketing concepts and for high ticket item lead generation. Some marketers mail millions of postcards weekly. One client nets almost one million dollars weekly, using postcards.

2.
Live Stamps Boost Response.

Use live stamps, not indicia or preprinted postage. How many times do you get a personal letter WITHOUT a stamp? Also, take your company name OFF the carrier. Teaser copy that I have had best results with – IMPORTANT. CONFIDENTIAL. DO NOT FOLD.

3.
Upsell, Upsell.

I walked into a casual restaurant the other day, and after I ordered they tried a simple upsell that would have added 50% extra profit I estimate to the establishment. Sometimes we forget to upsell with phone & online orders, they can add excellent profits to the bottom line.

4.
Use Involvement Devices.

Too many marketers are forgetting to use involvement devices on the reply/order form. Just a simple “Put This Sticker in the empty Box” can boost response 15%.

5.
Color Matters.

Don’t laugh, this is serious. Why are most Ferraris red? Does blue help IBM? McDonalds spent millions deciding on the right colors. Don’t create a great brand concept and devalue it with the wrong colors. Tips – upscale customers prefer muted colors. Downscale customers like bright colors. Men prefer blue. Women like red. Silver and gold means expensive. White means pure. Yellow means sunny. Black means mysterious, exotic, powerful. Green means outdoors, environmentally conscious. Orange reminds us of food. Blue, to men, means quality. To women blue may mean professional but maybe stuffy. Women think red means warmth. To men, red is exciting and dangerous.

6.
Patriotism Sells.

Depending upon the product or service, a flag image boosts response. Fox News has a permanent flag, waving as background. Patriotism works as a response concept.

7.
Long Copy Vs Short Copy.

All my DM winners have had super long copy. A 32 page letter will outpull a 4 page letter. A 16 page brochure will outpull an 8 page. Long copy sells, PROVIDED that it’s FACT-PACKED and addresses all the issues. Once, a full page ad in the Wall Street Journal pulled an OK response. We doubled the copy content and the results were 85% better.

8.
Lift Letters work.

Lift letters work. National Geographic was not sure which lift note to use, they were both good. They used both – and response was way better than using just one or the other.

9.
Always Say “You”.

Many marketers forget – you’re communicating with the market, one person at a time. So, personalize your message by addressing the recipient in a personal; way and always insure that your copy talks about “you”. We all read messages that seem more personal.

10.
Good Copy is Not always Good Grammar.

Sometimes, we need to use vernacular rather than strictly grammatically correct sentences. Winston Churchill said it best – “that is something, up with which I cannot put”.

11.
Be Highly Specific in Headlines & Copy.

“Get An Amazing Lift in Response” will not pull as well as – “How To get an 85% Increase in Response in 28 Days”.

12.
Use Credible Copy.

Which headline worked best?

“How to Get a 38% Increase in Your Investment”

“How to Get an 17% Increase in Your Investment”

The second headline worked better, it was more credible.

13.
Use Independent Third Party Endorsements, where ever possible.

If your client has outside testimonials, use them. Good headlines such as these work – “Acura Won the JD Power Customer Satisfaction Award for Three Years”; “Car & Driver Magazine Ranks Mercedes Benz as the Best Overall Car In Its Class”.

14.
Use Follow Up Mailings.

Especially for high ticket purchases, use follow-up mailings & telemarketing. One client mails 13 letters, over eight weeks, to generate leads for a $5,000 profit service. One or two letters does not cut it.

15.
Use Email Marketing.

Programs like Constant Contact based here in Boston enable marketers to present an excellent image to prospects and enable you to market yourself constantly to your customer and prospect lists. Programs like this have pre-existing templates that you can customize with your own copy & images. A great, inexpensive marketing tool.

16.
What Makes a Good DM Product?

Is your profit high enough? A good DM product must be capable of at least a 3:1 markup. Is the retail price above $20? Low retail priced DM products are tough to make viable. Is the product/service unique? The more unique it is, the better. “Not available in stores” is a powerful copy point.

17.
Baby Boomer Market Strong – and Getting Stronger.

By 2025, the over 60 market will be the main age group. There’ll be twice as many people over 65 as teenagers! So, conceive products/services that cater to this strong market with plenty of buying power.

18.
Sunbelt & Coasts are the Most Responsive Parts of the Country.

The most responsive parts of the country are the Coasts & the Sunbelt. Some TV marketers say that the South East is the best market of all, a great test market for new products. If they don’t buy it, maybe no-one will!
This event will be the January offering in the 10th season of Sunday Afternoon at the ‘Greenough House concerts at the historic Loring-Greenough House, 12 South Street, Jamaica Plain.

Coro Allegro is a not-for-profit classical music organization composed of members and friends of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities and dedicated to the performance of significant choral works for the enjoyment of all. Please visit our website at www.coroallegro.org to learn more about the chorus and to join their community.

The series recreates the atmosphere of 18th and 19th century “musical afternoons” in the 1760 Loring-Greenough House on the first Sunday of each month, October through May. Tickets are available at the door: donation $17 ($12 seniors, students and JPTC members) which includes a “preservation fee” to support preservation projects at the landmark property.
Upcoming concerts in this series:

Sunday, February 7, 2010: Duo Live Oak

Duo LiveOak is a fresh, visionary voice in alternative classical music, creating a body of lyrical contemporary art song rooted in traditions that reflect both a temporal and an ethnic diversity. Nancy Knowles (mezzo-soprano, poet) and Frank Wallace (composer, baritone, guitar, lute) collaborate as poet and composer in new songs with echoes of blues, medieval, jazz, and classical music from Ravel to avant garde. The power of great poetry infuses their work.

Sunday, March 7, 2010: Judy Conrad, Fortepiano, Chopin’s 200th Birthday

Frederic Chopin, whose 200th birthday is March 1st, 2010, played a square piano in his youth in Poland, and continued to perform on them in salons and even in concert halls into the 1840's. And much of his music was written to be played in parlors which often were equipped with pianos much like the Loring-Greenough House fortepiano. Judith Conrad will play a program of the sort that would have been played in such a parlor on March 7 at 3:00pm, focusing on the smaller-scale music of Chopin and including including some songs and flute music as well as music by Polish composers Marya Szymanowska and Prince Michal Cleofas Oginski and Princess Anna Maria of Dresden, from the last days of the Polish Monarchy.

Sunday, April 11, 2010: Pentimento

Eric Haas, recorders and Olaf Chris Hendrickson, archlute, theorbo and other rarely seen string instruments.
