Also known as the "most wired" country in the world, Korea is famous for its Internet connectivity and the leadership role it plays in the IT industry. As the 10th largest economy in the world, anyone can find just about anything in Korea. For example, English books and movies are readily available along with a variety of Western foods from take-outs to family restaurants.

For the adventurer, Korea's proximity to other Asian countries makes it an excellent hub for travel. Trips to Thailand, China, and Japan are the most common. Traveling within Korea is made easy by the clean, modern, and inexpensive public transportation system.

MATCH Corps: Urban Education Fellowship Year (1001 Commonwealth Avenue)

The MATCH Corps is an urban education service year program at the MATCH High and Middle Schools, both open-admission Charter Public Schools in Boston, MA. The MATCH mission is to close the academic achievement gap that our almost entirely minority student body faces, and prepare each of the urban youths at our school to succeed in college.

Corps members work 1-on-1 or 2-on-1 with 5-6 MATCH students every day, paired with them at the beginning of the year, tutoring them in their classroom subjects and on SAT, AP, and MCAS tests. The Corps, who live in dorm housing in the High School and in apartments near the Middle School, also have secondary duties as teaching assistants and administrative assistants, as well as running clubs, coaching sports, and powering extracurricular activities.

Corps members go on to teaching or administrative positions (often staying on at MATCH), as well as a variety of grad schools (law, medicine, education, etc.) and to positions as public policy leaders and social advocates.

Corps members have the option to take part in the MATCH Teacher Training Program during their Corps year, a program designed to produce unusually effective and confident first-year teachers.

MATCH has received much recognition since it opened its doors in the fall of 2000 for its rigorous, innovative approach to urban education. In 2007, MATCH was named by US News & World Report at one of the nation’s top-100 High Schools, and in 2008 was similarly recognized by Newsweek as one of the top-25 High Schools in the country.
Environment Science Educators wanted at “e” inc.

“e” inc. – the environmental learning and action center, now in its sixth year, is currently seeking BA- and MA-level environment science or biological science teachers interested in working in urban settings within Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts.

We are seeking part-time staff members conversant in one or more of these topics: ocean and rainforest biodiversity, New England habitats, animal behavior, the basic science of energy and renewable resources, and global warming-climate change.

Applicants need to be comfortable with a wide range of teaching techniques from inquiry-based challenges and experiments to creatively involving children or teens in data collection. Applicants also need to be conversant with creating and doing hands-on projects and be willing to use visual arts media to help students enjoy, model, and understand how their earth works.

All candidates for a position with “e” inc. must be mature and focused, able to negotiate a role within a larger urban institution, comfortable with working independently, and familiar with planning lessons that:

(1) are engrossing and age-appropriate
(2) enable students to build important skills
(3) lead to students using their science confidently as they formulate and carry out sustainability projects on a natural resource issue. A sense of inspiration would come in handy.

“e” inc. staff will receive supervision and be compensated for teaching time (anticipated as three on-site hours and one-hour planning) for each site as well as time spent in supervision and weekly staff meetings. This position would begin with three sites, with the opportunity to build to five. Most on site work will take place between the hours of 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
Car is very helpful, but not essential.

“e” inc. is a six-year-old nonprofit whose mission is to educate and support children and adults to become environmental citizens for life. We accomplish this by teaching the deep science that comprises natural resource systems and by helping individuals, groups, and classes create and support actions that foster sustainability locally and/or globally.

We seek to create a vibrant work atmosphere that is committed and creative. We invite like-minded educators and science majors to apply.

Job Description:

Meridian Academy is an urban, independent, secondary school in Brookline, MA. and a member of the Coalition of Essential Schools (http://www.essentialschools.org). All teachers are expected to bring a liberal arts perspective to the different disciplines that they teach. We are looking for an experienced educator to join our staff.

Meridian is seeking a part-time Spanish teacher to teach two sections of Spanish (with the possibility of the job growing in subsequent years) and to work with our other Spanish teacher further developing the foundations for our seven-year world language curriculum.

Using the broader resources of Boston and its environs as an extended classroom.

Working with teachers of all disciplines, the students, and the broader community to develop the curriculum (both the formal classroom experiences and overall school culture).

Qualifications:

Preferred: Two or more years teaching Spanish at the secondary level.

A bachelor's degree in a related discipline. A master's degree is preferred.

A flexible and energetic personality that can work productively in a changing and growing school environment.

Strong interpersonal skills when working with diverse students and families. Ability to participate in shared decision-making that invites everyone to contribute to the improvement of the school.

How to Apply
Consult our website to learn more about the school and to gain a fuller picture of the goals and philosophy of Meridian Academy.
