I can do much of the work myself, but need a sysadmin type to help with the hard stuff. That means I really cannot afford to hire someone who's learning on the fly.

Here are some details. The data is coming from a dedicated server, which is an AMD Opteron Server - 4x320 620HX - 4GB ECC - Tyan Mobo that is 2.5 years old and running "x86_64 GNU/Linux" seems to be Fedora, LSB, or RedHat. (when I do an "ls /etc/*release* all three show up).

I don't really care which virtual linux server the data goes to, but linode.com has been recommended to me and is only $20/month. I want something that doesn't charge me a bundle for every new domain name, since I love buying a lot of domain names.

This does not qualify as an unpaid internship. You are asking for someone to bring their own imagination to create you a website that will bring in more business. You gain financially. Nobody needs you on their resume. They can just as easily design it and show it on their own CD. Intern does not mean free labor, cheap labor, maybe, but not free.

Did it even occur to you that the school has to approve of the internship? A student can't just say they are doing an internship wherever they please You have to be certified. And the school will require you to pay the intern if they are performing a task that you would otherwise have to pay for.

In order to qualify as an unpaid internship, the requirement is simple: no work can be performed that is of any benefit at all to the company.

The U.S. Department of Labor has outlined a list of criteria that ALL must be met in order for an internship to be unpaid.

1. The training, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to that which would be given in a vocational school;
2. The training is for the benefit of the trainee;
3. The trainees do not displace regular employees, but work under close observation;
4. The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the trainees and on occasion the employer�s operations may actually be impeded;
5. The trainees are not necessarily entitled to a job at the completion of the training period; and
6. The employer and the trainee understand that the trainees are not entitled to wages for the time spent in training.

From the above list, #4 is really the key one � all the others will follow from whether the employer derives any immediate benefit from the activities.

Only scumbags take advantage of people in a bad economic environment by offering unpaid "internships" to fill positions they would otherwise have to pay good money for. If you are really desperate, take the gig. Then, after you're done, sue them for everything they are worth.
