The word Za Za in its true ancient form means “plenty for everyone,” and this mantra rings true for “Za Za Restaurant & Nitery,” a casual dining restaurant located minutes North of Boston, MA. Situated on Route 1-North, amongst a sea of old New England Kitsch, this hidden jewel serves some of the best seafood, steaks and regional-Italian fare presented by Chef Manrique Alvarenga. Items such as seafood risotto, herb-rubbed rack of lamb and Gemelli and Sweet Italian Sausage dot the menu. Nightly specials are always available along with a full Tapas Menu. A variety of 45 handcrafted martinis, spirits, wine and beer are served in the full-service 360° lounge. The 140-seat restaurant also boasts a 20-seat outdoor patio, private function room and dance floor. Some comments from previous class and workshop participants:
Steve is an excellent teacher, consistently patient, creative, and skillful. Steve uses a variety of approaches to explain the Taiji form, including demonstrations, (partner) exercises, and even metaphor. He is extremely knowledgeable concerning the underpinnings of Taiji, its health benefits and its martial arts applications. He gives personal attention to each student and breaks down the complicated form into smaller elements that are easier to understand. Steve also has a pleasant, helpful manner that makes the class enjoyable. I would enthusiastically recommend his classes to anyone interested in the benefits of Taiji. Sincerely,
John Heymann

“Very well organized and comprehensive. This was an excellent class, one of the best I’ve taken.”
Donald Currie, L.Ac.

In high school I injured my shoulder wrestling and playing football. It has been bothering me for twenty years, I tried everything I could think of to help it, stretching, going to various doctors including physical therapy, but after a few months it was only slightly better. I work in construction, so this was interfering with my work as well as with most other aspects of my life, and I still was not able to get better. I recently decided to get back in shape and began lifting weights and the pain came back worse then ever and I had to stop doing shoulder exercises. I read an article on Qigong and figured it was worth a try so I looked up Steve and signed up for private lessons. I explained my shoulder problems to him and he taught me some Chinese exercises, and after just two weeks of learning and practicing my shoulder felt almost back to normal. Now, I'm able to work, sleep, and live my life without shoulder pain, and I've even been able to resume lifting weights." Dean Gilligan

“It was good to have you as a teacher. Your teaching was so concise and detailed. Thank you much.”
Julian Wong
“More than promised. Excellent knowledge of course subject from general to specific. Excellent class not only for info to clients, but for personal rejuvenation and increased energy.”

“The course has provided me with enough information to begin practice on my own. I plan to continue my study of qigong with Steven.”
“Thank you (for) an awesome workshop. An amazing level of detailed instruction superbly communicated. This is the first time I’ve felt deeply motivated to take up a regular qigong practice.”

Opening the Energy Gates Qigong/Neigong, Level 1 class begins 1/7 (Arlington)

Over 2.000 years old, this ancient foundational Daoist neigong builds internal strength by facilitating a physical and energetic openness through relaxed stationary and moving practices that emphasize proper body alignments, Daoist breathing, and mental focus. Through this practice, more qi is encouraged to flow freely throughout the entire body. By learning to use the mind to work deeply inside the body at increasingly more subtle levels, the practitioner becomes able to maximize movement capacity and energy levels and deepen meditation, while relieving stress, pain, and reversing the course of many chronic diseases.

Included are an introduction to basic Daoist breathing techniques and the following inwardly-focused exercises which harmonize and balance the qi, energize and strengthen the internal organs and adjust and stabilize internal alignments.

Standing Practice
In this core stationary practice, a very detailed Zhan Zhuang (“Standing Like a Stake”) sometimes referred to as Standing Meditation, focused awareness is used to first perceive and then clear energy blockages from the physical and energy body in a general way--the “outer dissolving” practice--while preparing the mind for deeper meditative practices. Later, the student learns to identify and feel energy gates which define a primary energy matrix within the body. Any qi stagnation or other obstruction that may be present can then be dissolved, allowing the gates to open more fully and function optimally. Some of these gates coincide with acupuncture points, while others are unique to qigong.

Cloud Hands
The moving practice of Cloud Hands teaches proper body alignments while in motion, and is considered by many to be the best single movement exercise for overall health. It introduces the alignments and major movements of taiji (tai chi) while developing a strong ability to root, helping to further open the body, strengthen ligaments, heal or prevent joint problems, increase qi flow and harmonize yin and yang qi.

Daoist Spine Stretch
This unique spine stretch will help relax all the muscles of the back, neck and shoulders and relieve spinal tension and back pain, and begins the process of learning to control the movements of each vertebra individually.

3 Arm Swings
Three exercises to relax your arms, legs, and torso, relieving joint pain in the hips, arms and shoulders while energizing each major region of your body delineated by the sanjiao, or three burners. Each arm swing addresses one of the three burners.

Qi storage at the lower dantian is taught at the end of this qigong set.

This ten-week session will introduce the Standing Practice and Cloud Hands, and is open to everyone. This is an excellent class if you are just beginning a qigong practice.

Opening the Energy Gates Qigong Weekend Workshop, 2/20-21/10 (Newton (NESA))

While it’s not possible to adequately cover everything in the Energy Gates set in one weekend, this workshop will focus on the Standing Practice and Cloud Hands in some detail, and if time permits, the First Arm Swing and the Daoist Spine Stretch may be introduced.

There are a few amendments for this weekend workshop:

1. This is a professional-level training (versus the consumer level qigong classes more commonly available), so there will be more detailed instruction and more Chinese medical information included in this training than is taught in most qigong classes. Because qigong is for everyone, all are welcomed and encouraged to attend, and everything will be expalined in a way that will be easy for everyone to understand.

2. Energetic clearing and self-protection is an integral part of Energy Gates Qigong, and NESA has asked that I focus a little more on that aspect. While that may be particularly beneficial for acupuncturists and other health care professionals who regularly come into contact with pathogenic influences due to the nature of their work, it’s an important consideration for all of us, a skill we all need. In addition to the more obvious concerns of colds, flu, and other infectious disease pathogens we’re exposed to especially throughout the winter months, we’re also influenced by the toxic energies of anger, fear, jealousy, spite, and other potentially destabilizing emotional energies and more subtle energetic pathogens in our work, social, academic, and even home environments. Energy Gates Qigong will neutralize and dissipate the harmful effects of those influences on your daily life.

3. Energy Gates is a Water Element qigong. As winter is the season associated with the Water Element, February is one of the best times to learn and practice this qigong, as it is supported by the energy of the season.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Steven Cardoza, M.Sc., L.Ac., is a licensed acupuncturist, herbalist, bodyworker, medical qigong practitioner, and nutrition counselor with an active practice in the Boston area. He is certified to teach Wu taiji and qigong by Daoist lineage holder Master B.K. Frantzis. Some of his other qigong teachers include 14th generation lineage holder of China’s E Mei tradition, Master Fu Weizhong; and Master Hong Liu, author of The Healing Art of Qigong.

Some student comments:

"This qigong course will ensure that I become a better practitioner through providing a means for me to focus on my own health while tending to the health of others. Preserving my own health is imperative if I am to continue helping others, and I feel that this instructor is truly facilitating that process."
--Diana Fernandes, Lic. Ac., M.A.O.M; Marlborough Wellness Center

"A terrific seminar! Very well paced and full of lots of useful, well presented material. He interspersed nicely the energetic explanations of the postures. Questions were answered plainly with practical analogies."
--Anne Geraghty, L.Ac.

"Thank you! The course is great. I've reached the point where at least I know how little I know. I think the presentation was excellent, and I intend practicing regularly. Please put me on your email list."
--Bridgit Holzer, L.Ac.

"So many CEU classes can be so drenched in theory. This was a great way to get some healing and replenishment for me so that I can be more powerful and effective with my patients."
Wendy Goodwin, L.Ac., Middlebury, VT

“Thank you (for) an awesome workshop. An amazing level of detailed instruction superbly communicated. This is the first time I’ve felt deeply motivated to take up a regular qigong practice.” --Ian Goldsmidt

“More than promised. Excellent knowledge of course subject from general to specific. Excellent class not only for info to clients, but for personal rejuvenation and increased energy.”
--Cindy Lyon, L.Ac.

“(The) material was very accessible for both beginning and more advanced students. Steven presents material with a very clear narrative background, methodical practical experience, and ongoing individualized guidance. (He) is an excellent instructor--quite gifted, yet humble in his presentation. Thank you for your skill and sensitivity.”
--Pat Mayo, L.Ac.

“He has studied under well-known masters and instructors, and his knowledge of the taught material was self-evident. I would very much recommend this course for anyone, and will whenever I have the chance!”
--Masayuki Hamazaki, L.Ac.

“Very well organized and comprehensive. This was an excellent class, one of the best I’ve taken.” --Donald Currie, L.Ac.

“It was good to have you as a teacher. Your teaching was so concise and detailed. Thank you much.” --Julian Wong

"In high school I injured my shoulder wrestling and playing football. It hasbeen bothering me for twenty years, I tried everything I could think of to help it, streaching, going to various doctors including physical therapy, but after a few months it was only slightly better. Now, I'm able to work, sleep, and live my life without shoulder pain, and I've even been able to resume lifting weights."

Opening the Energy Gates Qigong/Neigong, Class begins 1/7 (Arlington)

He is certified to teach Wu taiji and qigong by Daoist lineage holder Master B.K. Frantzis.
Some student comments:
“Thank you (for) an awesome workshop. An amazing level of detailed instruction superbly communicated. This is the first time I’ve felt deeply motivated to take up a regular qigong practice.” --Ian Goldsmidt

“I have been diabetic since age 3 and am insulin dependent. I have been your (tai chi) student for several weeks. (After more than 10 years of no sensation in my feet from diabetic neuropathy, since beginning my tai chi practice), sensation in my feet has increased, and for the last two weeks (the sensations) have increased strongly. I am positive that the tai chi system gives very good results for my diabetic condition.”
--Alla Pourzyreva

“It was good to have you as a teacher. Your teaching was so concise and detailed. Thank you much.” --Julian Wong

"Robert took very complex concepts such as database planning and design and made them very easy to understand for a complete novice like me. After several weeks of trying to learn Access 2007 from a book unsuccessfully, I decided to take a half day instruction from Robert. If I had found him earlier, I would have saved a lot of time and confusion. His explanations were extremely logical and clear. I do plan to take lessons from Robert again and again. Highly recommended.

Robert is highly skilled in Microsoft ACCESS 2007 and an excellent teacher - which makes him the best trainer I have experienced in a LONG time. I would highly recommend him to anyone who wants to learn general AND specific ways to understand and utilize MS Office. The value for his training FAR OUTWEIGHED the cost of the session.
How To Say No: By Saying Yes to what Matters Most (Stow, MA)

This workshop is for women only!

Do you ever say Yes to keep the peace?

Do you often feel overwhelmed?

Do you want to say No with confidence?

Our culture tells women to avoid conflict and keep the relationship
primary. Women’s focus on nurturing has served our culture.
Unfortunately, they often pay a price for it. We believe women can
honor the relationship and take care of themselves.

Come learn a simple formula to
• Find the inner power for your No
• Deliver a confident No and stick to it
• Stay in relationship when saying No

At this workshop, you will
• Learn each of the three parts of the formula
• Practice the formula on real-life situations
• Receive feedback and refine your delivery

You will leave with tools to
• Manage your default response to requests and demands
• Uncover and act from your deepest Yes
• Embrace differences while promoting your interests
• Foster authentic relationship while staying true to you

In this workshop, we will explore the particular pressures women feel
when saying No and adapt the model to those gender-specific concerns.

To allow participants to do their deepest work, the group will be limited to 16.

FACILITATORS:
Guthrie Sayen, PhD, PCC, helps people unwrap the gift of their
pain, trains life coaches, and creates workshops for people who
want to step fully into spiritual adulthood.

For over 20 years, Joseph DiCenso has helped people bring more
of themselves to life as a counselor, coach, workshop facilitator, and
leadership consultant.

When: 9 am to 6 pm, Saturday, Jan. 9

Where: 34 Whitman St., Stow, MA 01775

Cost: $159 if mailed by Dec 31; $199 after Dec 31; non-refundable
after Jan. 5

Registration: Make check payable to Guthrie Sayen and send to
27 Rundelane, Bloomfield, CT 06002

More info: www.joseph-dicenso.com or Guthrie Sayen, 860.461.1253, gs@guthriesayen.com

“...transformational, both personally and professionally. Having
bounced between accommodation and putting up walls, I learned
something different: how to say Yes to myself and the
relationship, while finding a clearly defined and negotiated No that
feels flexible, loving and connected.”—Kathleen McGarry, Associate
Director of Major Gifts, Smith College

“Joseph and Guthrie presented with a perfect balance and
synergy--as if they were one person. I also found the content
extremely useful and easy to implement in my life.”

Weekly Qigong (Chi Kung) Classes Beginning 10/21 (Arlington)

DRAGON AND TIGER QIGONG Level 1 Class
For greater health, more energy, and longevity.

Qigong, or “energy practice”, teaches you to recognize and cultivate your qi, or vital life energy. Rooted in Daoism and Buddhism, this gentle seven-movement qigong is the easiest complete qigong to learn. Harmonizing movement, breath, and awareness, it will:
•Reduce stress and increase energy
•Improve circulation and flexibility
•Enhance physical and emotional balance
•Stimulate qi flow through acupuncture meridians
•Improve performance in work, athletics, and sex
•Promote deep healing and wellness

The focus of this Level 1 class is on learning the seven movements of this form.

This is an excellent class for beginners, as well as for those with qigong experience who are ready to learn a new form. Dragon and Tiger has some similarities to taiji (tai chi), but it is simpler to do and easier to remember. In China, it has been used to treat cancer and other degenerative diseases.

=======================
Want to learn more about qigong? You may enjoy the CD, "Understanding Qigong: A Guide For Western Minds", available on the Catalog page of my site. A PDF of my article, "Qigong Basice for Everyone", first published in the Spring 2008 issue of Qi Journal, will be included as a free gift with every purchase of the CD (for website purchases only).

Steven is recognized by the States of California and Massachusetts as a continuing education provider for licensed acupuncturists.

Some student comments:
Steve is an excellent teacher, consistently patient, creative, and skillful. Steve uses a variety of approaches to explain the Taiji form, including demonstrations, (partner) exercises, and even metaphor. He is extremely knowledgable concerning the underpinnings of Taiji, its health benefits and its martial arts applications. He gives personal attention to each student and breaks down the complicated form into smaller elements that are easier to understand. Steve also has a pleasant, helpful manner that makes the class enjoyable. I would enthusiastically recommend his classes to anyone interested in the benefits of Taiji. Sincerely,
--John Heymann

“Thank you (for) an awesome workshop. An amazing level of detailed instruction superbly communicated. This is the first time I’ve felt deeply motivated to take up a regular qigong practice.” --Ian Goldsmidt

“Very well organized and comprehensive. This was an excellent class, one of the best I’ve taken.” --Donald Currie, L.Ac.

"In high school I injured my shoulder wrestling and playing football. It hasbeen bothering me for twenty years, I tried everything I could think of to help it, streaching, going to various doctors including physical therapy, but after a few months it was only slightly better. Now, I'm able to work, sleep, and live my life without shoulder pain, and I've even been able to resume lifting weights." --Dean Gilligan

“Excellent workshop...excellent!”
--Patricia Kelly-Kim

“He has studied under well-known masters and instructors, and his knowledge of the taught material was self-evident. I would very much recommend this course for anyone, and will whenever I have the chance!”
--Masayuki Hamazaki, L.Ac.

“Thanks for your friendly and thorough approach to teaching!”
One Fast Move or I’m Gone: Kerouac’s Big Sur

In 1957 Jack Kerouac was a literary rock star, lionized by his fans, but along with sudden fame and media hype came his unraveling.

One Fast Move or I’m Gone: Kerouac’s Big Sur, takes us back to the cabin in the Big Sur woods he retreated to and the Beat haunts of San Francisco and New York City for an unflinching look at the compelling events the book is based on.

The story unfolds through Kerouac’s prose, first-hand recollections from Kerouac’s contemporaries as well as writers, poets, actors and musicians who have been deeply influenced by Kerouac’s unique gifts and by stunning, High Definition visual imagery set to original music composed and performed by recording artists Jay Farrar of Son Volt and Benjamin Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie.

Big Sur is an evocative account of a time in Jack’s life when he’d “come undone,” both emotionally and spiritually. He escapes to a cabin in Big Sur to confront his inner demons and find a modicum of peace by the sea. The film features cameos by Sam Shepard, Tom Waits, Amber Tamblyn, Patti Smith, Robert Hunter, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and many others.

Jack Kerouac’s novel Big Sur was the lyrical compass for the compelling documentary soundtrack composed by celebrated recording artist Jay Ferrar (Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo) and performed together with Benjamin Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service). The hauntingly intimate lyrics were taken directly from the pages of Kerouac’s Big Sur, and melded into a series of acoustic melodies over the course of three days.

Gary Cherone's WHO Tribute SLIP KID--Celebrates 40th Anniv. of Tommy! (Regent Theatre, Arlington)

SLIP KID COMING TO ARLINGTON’S REGENT THEATRE SAT OCT 24
Tribute To THE WHO Led By GARY CHERONE of Extreme and Van Halen
Will Celebrate 40th Anniversary of Landmark Rock Opera “Tommy”

SLIP KID—a tribute to The Who featuring legendary Boston rock vocalist, Gary Cherone—will perform an exclusive concert at Arlington’s Regent Theatre on Saturday, October 24 at 8pm. This rare show by Slip Kid (the band performs only a couple of times a year) will feature a large portion of the Who’s seminal rock opera Tommy. Says Cherone, "We are celebrating the 40th anniversary of Tommy, a watershed moment in rock ‘n’ roll, and Slip Kid performs it in the spirit of Live at Leeds, the way The Who originally intended—not like some Broadway cast which was doing Annie two weeks earlier."

SLIP KID is not just another WHO tribute band, nor does it try to impersonate them. SLIP KID is a truly inspired celebration of the WHO’s music and live performance which captures the raw emotional energy of one of the most revered rock bands of our age. And WHO better to do it? The brain child of the brothers Cherone, with Markus on guitar and Gary singing lead, SLIP KID was born from a common bond that has influenced them from the very beginning and continues to inspire today. The band consists of veterans of the Boston music scene with Gary's former band mate, singer-songwriter Paul Mangone on bass, the manic antics of Moon handled by Dana Spellman on drums, and Jeff Calder on keyboards and programming. In addition to Tommy, the audience will hear the WHO’s early eclectic pop, familiar anthems of a g-g-g-generation, along with a few odds and sods in-between. "For my brother Mark and me," says Cherone, "Slip Kid is pure and easy a labor of love."

>From 1985 to 1996, Gary Cherone led the internationally renowned, multi-platinum rock group, Extreme, releasing several hit singles including the smash, “More Than Words.” The band also performed at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992—seen by over a billion people in 80 countries—where Cherone also fronted Queen. Shortly after Extreme disbanded in 1996, Cherone became Van Halen's lead singer until 1999 replacing Sammy Hagar. Much to the delight of their fans around the world, Extreme regrouped and hit the road over the past couple of years and this summer completed an extensive international tour. The Regent concert provides a rare opportunity to see and hear an arena rock star (and his mates) performing a passionate tribute to an iconic rock band in an intimate, 500-seat concert hall. It’s the closest thing to seeing The Who in their prime at the Fillmore East.

SLIP KID will play the historic Regent Theatre, “Arlington’s Show Place of Entertainment,” on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at 8pm. Reserved seats are $20 to $30. Located on 7 Medford Street (off Mass. Ave.) in Arlington, Massachusetts, the Regent Theatre is MBTA and handicap accessible with free parking across the street. For tickets and more information, call 781-646-4849 or visit www.regenttheatre.com.

“A TRIBUTE TO ELTON JOHN” BY YELLOW BRICK ROAD COMING TO ARLINGTON’S REGENT THEATRE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17 AT 7PM

4th Annual “Lunch Around The World Boston Style” Fundraiser for The Elton John AIDS Foundation Will Also Feature a Set by ‘American Idol’ Finalist Ayla Brown and Massachusetts State Representative Scott Brown as Emcee

Gerald Brann and his band, Yellow Brick Road—the premiere Elton John tribute band—will perform at The Regent Theatre in Arlington, Massachusetts for one show only on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 7pm. Proceeds from the Fourth Annual “Lunch Around The World Boston Style” Fundraiser will benefit The Elton John AIDS Foundation. The charity event--featuring special guest “American Idol” finalist and Massachusetts native, Ayla Brown--will also include an extensive raffle and silent auction. (Ayla Brown's father, Mass. State Rep. Scott Brown will host the event.)

There is no other performer who looks and sounds so much like Elton John, nor any tribute act that provides the experience of being at an Elton John concert the way Brann and Yellow Brick Road do. Brann not only bears an uncanny resemblance to the international superstar—complete with gap-toothed smile and many of his mannerisms—but recreates Elton John’s vocals and playing to a tee. To capture the essence of the piano man, Brann dresses in replica costumes and wears Elton's trademark outrageous glasses. A trained jazz pianist, Brann has been a lifelong Elton John fan, and his admiration for and love of his music comes shining through as he plays one hit after another with remarkable likeness to the pop music icon. Brann and his talented five-piece band evoke audience participation throughout the entire show—whether singing along to "Rocket Man" and "Your Song," swaying to "Candle in the Wind," or hopping and bopping to "Crocodile Rock."

With an unprecedented nod from the man himself, Brann was recently granted permission to use Elton John's own orchestral scores to perform with the Augusta Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Brann and Yellow Brick Road have been officially endorsed by Hercules, the International Elton John Fan Club, and have played extensively throughout New England—including The Foxwoods Resort and Casino—to rave reviews.

The historic Regent Theatre, “Arlington’s Show Place of Entertainment,” is located on 7 Medford St. (off Mass. Ave) in Arlington, Massachusetts. The Regent is handicap and MBTA accessible, with free parking in a municipal lot across the street. Tickets --$35 for preferred seating, $30 for reserved orchestra seating, and $25 for reserved balcony seating, seniors, and groups of 10 or more--are available by calling 781-646-4849, online at http://www.regenttheatre.com/events/, or in person at the Regent Theatre box office.
