Arc Welding In The 1930s General Electric Print (Watertown, MA) $9

Are you a welder? Anyone in your family ever been a welder? Here is a print from 1930 which is a fine example of Depression era industrial art.

The picture area is 10 x 13 inches.

The condition is excellent; no color shift or fading. It looks nearly new but it's over 70 years old.

During the 1930s and 1940s, General Electric published calendars with artwork advertising the wide variety of their products as well as memorializing their more famous researchers, engineers and scientists. They made electrical products ranging from lightbulbs to radios to diesel electric locomotives to electric turbines for warships. GE employed first rate artists to illustrate these calendars. A bit of trivia; Thomas Edison was one of the founders of General Electric.

This print was cut from a 1930s era General Electric calendar and is titled: "FABRICATING A TRANSFORMER TANK WITH ARC WELDING". It's a dramatically lit view of an arc welder at work. The artist is Harold M. Mott-Smith. Mott-Smith did many fine paintings for General Electric. If you Google his name, you'll get more information about him. Next to the signature, there is a '30.

This print comes from a former General Electric employee who collected these prints and stored them in a closet for decades. Email me louis.king@comcast.net

Here is a vintage print of lighting done by General Electric engineers for the Golden Gate Exposition. The print is titled: PAINTED WITH LIGHT BY GENERAL ELECTRIC

From Wikipedia:

"The Golden Gate International Exposition (1939 and 1940), held at San Francisco, California's Treasure Island, was a World's Fair that celebrated, among other things, the city's two newly-built bridges. The San Francisco � Oakland Bay Bridge was dedicated in 1936 and the Golden Gate Bridge was dedicated in 1937. The exposition was opened initially from February 18, 1939 through October 29, 1939. It opened again from May 25, 1940 through September 29, 1940."

The color and attention to detail is remarkeable given that this print is from the 1930s. I enlarged a section so you can see the quality for yourself.

During the 1930s and 1940s, General Electric published calendars with artwork advertising the wide variety of their products as well as memorializing their more famous researchers, engineers and scientists. They made electrical products ranging from lightbulbs to radios to diesel electric locomotives to electric turbines for warships. GE employed first rate artists to illustrate these calendars. A bit of trivia; Thomas Edison was one of the founders of General Electric.

This print was cut from 1930s & 1940s era General Electric calendar. I have framed similar GE prints and they display very nicely. I am only selling the print, not the frame.

The picture area is 10 x 13 inches.

The condition is excellent; no color shift or fading. Looks nearly new but it's over 70 years old.

BETTER LIGHT MEANS BETTER SIGHT is the title of this print painted by the famous illustrator Lawrence L. Wilbur. Lawrence Wilbur did fine commercial art for GE and other companies. It shows a mother helping her son with homework by the electric light of a Mazda lightbulb. Mazda was the trade name for General Electric light bulbs in the 1930s and 1940s.

This rainbow dancer Kachina doll is signed by the artist and was purchased at a gallery in Taos, New Mexico. It was originally purchased for $55, and is in excellent condition, having been only briefly displayed. (I don't know if this doll was made by an official member of a registered Native American tribe or if it's a replica, but my understanding is that laws prohibited the galleries from saying that the art they were selling was Native American unless it was made by official members of registered Native American tribes.)
